A light wave can also interfere with itself when it is incident on a single slit, since each point of the wave can act like a small point source of light. This video walks you though how single slit diffraction is similar to and different from double slit diffraction. We've said all along that light is a wave. But how do we actually know that?? Many people, including Isaac Newton, believed that light was made up of particles. Young's double slit experiment cleverly takes advantage of wave diffraction to prove that light is a wave and not a bunch of particles.
