Well, English isn't like other languages in having so many words pronounced the way they are written. America is a continent, not a country. There is always a greater consistency for pronunciation in other languages besides English. It's even true in Danish with almost all letters of words being silent. Pork and work are with different pronunciations, like tough and though. You need to get a pronunciation guide in English to help you pronounce words correctly.

Actually "spelling bee" exists here in Brazil too, there were competitions in my school, but I don't remember much bc I think it was for very young kids Edit: I just remembered, it was my English teacher who did that, based on the original spelling bee, so I don't think most other schools had that lol

I clicked just to say "They're not" then I saw the description lol. Portuguese has them too. "Spelling Contest", there's (or was, idk) a tv show called just "Spelling" (Soletrando). To be fair, I think the diversity of pronunciation and spelling in English is very charming. The fact that the language of origin actually influences the spelling is a cool nod to where it came from, almost built-in credits. It does make it so that its a bit harder to learn, but english isn't that hard a language in the first place, and if you study the etymology of the words you know, when you hear a new one in the wild their spelling is often very clear. I tend to think of it more like a feature than a bug.

Spelling bees are held in Ireland too, I participated in 2 at my school and whoever won got to go onto the national one (I think - not sure if they had to go to a regional one first or something but I remember it being an official one of some kind). A similar thing is held in Italy according to my parents, but since Italian spelling is really straightforward, they do it with verb conjugations instead

Most languages have these. Japan has their own version but its for knowing the stroke order of kanji because theres a strict order to be followed for writing kanji. And to put it into perspective theres 50k kanji and PROFESSIONAL kanji enthusiest on average know 10 to 15k kanji. So can we please stop pretending like english is really that bad, its not even in the top 10 most difficult languages 😂.

Brazil had a popular TV show called "Soletrando" ("Spell it"). It was a Portuguese version of Spelling Bees, but with very rare words as Portuguese orthography is very regular.

In Indonesia, Every Latin letter literally spelled the same in different word. Except for letter "E" that spelled differently depending by what local language is your mother tongue is. But whatever your accent is, it just doesn't change the meaning of the word. We also didn't have any Diacritic to modified the spelling. We have Official Rule called "Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia" or PUEBI (General Manual for Indonesia Language Spelling/Orthography) that rulling how the loanwords will be written and speaks for Bahasa Indonesia users. Example : "Executive" become "Eksekutif". PUEBI rulled that "X" become "ks" and any sort of syllables with "consonant ending sound" have to "end with consonant" Some other Spelling Example : "A" in word "Bang", "Bata", "Lambat", "Rasa" spelled like "A" in "Tartar" "C" in word "Cantik", "Kaca", "Rancah" spelled like "C" in "Chin" (without the "h") In English, the word "Pacific Ocean" spelled "C" in 3 different ways. The "C" was spelled as "s", "k", and "sy". So in Indonesia, we write it as "Pa-si-fik O-syen" (or "Samudera Pasifik" as the official name) That's why when I was 8 y.o. wondering why there is a "spelling" competition LOL? Can't people just spelled the letter correctly?. But then I realized that English (or "Inggris" in Indonesia) is a whole different beast wkwkwkwkwkwk. We still can't fathom why would a language have to be so complex ( _I'm talking to you Mandarin and Magyar_ ) when the main objective is to ease understanding with each other

Dyktando polega na pisaniu ze słuchu jakiegoś fragmentu tekstu, gdzie oceniania jest nie tylko ortografia ale też interpunkcja. Spelling bee polega na tym że jakieś dziecko stoi na scenie i musi przeliterować jakieś słowo i może poprosić jego definicję ze względu na liczne homofony. Utrudnieniem w spelling bee jest mnóstwo słów zapożyczonych z innych języków, które funkcjonują w angielskim w oryginalnym zapisie

A Brazilian commentator said that English is such a bad language that in order to write and read it correctly, you have to study your whole life and that by doing that you end up learning a lot. So, just to learn your native language you have to become intelligent. In Portuguese, if you learn the basics of it, you can write correctly 90% of the time (as a native speaker). So you can write Portuguese fairly correctly (in terms of words, not talking about beautiful sentences) with a basic education and as someone who doesn't read.

Spanish spelling bee is basically a battle with your brain to remember if a syllable was supposed to be written with v- or b-, s-/c-/z-, je-ji/ge-gi, -s/-z, and y-/ll-; plus the «h» as John Cena because you never see it coming. But there is also the hidden difficulty: specify if there is an á/é/í/ó/ú.

the problem is actually far, far dumber than you think. the problem is that English doesn't have an alphabet, which everyone who can read English knows. but... because everyone was indoctrinated as little kids to believe that English has an alphabet, English speakers don't know what the term 'alphabet' even fucking means. English spelling conventions are actually genius, and extremely useful, in no small measure specifically because they're not alphabetic. maybe, you should try learning how English actually works before proclaiming that English sucks. you should try realizing that your perception that English sucks is derived from the fact that your English teachers sucked, and had absolutely no clue wtf they were talking about.

In Portuguese (Brazil at least), we kinda (really kinda) have spelling bees. They are called "ditados" and are not really spoken, but written. They're mostly used by middle school teachers to teach and correct how to write words and orthography. Portuguese has some troublesome letters: 1. S (saia), SS (osso), Ç (açaí), X(expansão), SC (nascer), XC (excesso), C (cervo) all have the same sound: S sound 2. CH (chave), X (xale): English SH sound [at least this one has a rule on how to use] 3.1. Z (xadrez), S (francês): S sound again & 3.2. Z (fazer), S (asa): Z sound 4. J (jipe), G followed by I/E(geleia): the same S sound of Plea/s/ure [kinda has a rule too] + Some accent marks and the "hífen" (-) that most people don't know know how to use

English orthography is so stupid because there's 160 English dialects, so it's basically impossible to create a writing system for English that's actually good.

Polish doesn't have spelling bees but we do have Dictation as a form of test or competition. That is largely because Polish has some phones represented by different letters like h=ch, u=ó, ż=rz. Those are leftovers from phones that fade from use. So Dictation tests your knowledge of the rules of how phones are transcribed.

It has always wondered me how much attention they give them for knowing how to spell words. It personally impresses me a lot more to see someone misspell words on their own language

I like watching Chinese poetry competitions on Chinese TV. The format is that you are given a 4-word proverb with historical significance and you can have to fill the related 4-word proverb, or maybe just one specific missing word within it. Sometimes the audience participates too and you can used the word chosen by the majority of the audience as a guideline...but the audience can also get it wrong because these can be obscure proverbs!
