Train Vs. Plane: Oslo To Stockholm. Is The Train A Better Option?
We went from Oslo (Norway) to Stockholm (Sweden), a journey of about 300 miles. As always it is easy to fly, but taking the train from capital city to capital city overland should be so easy, right? Well we opted for the 5 hour train journey to see what it was like, and also tried to work out how much longer the train took vs the plane.

Oslo vs London. 24 Hour Challenge - Which City Is More Expensive?
Просмотров 412День назад
Oslo vs London - We live in London and it is not cheap! But everyone says Norway is so expensive. Even the Swedes told us to be careful. So when we spent a full day in Oslo we decided to take a challenge. We would record everything we ate, drank and did all day long, and then compare it to the same in London. But which city was more expensive, Oslo or London? Norway or the UK? CHAPTERS 📸 insta...

Ryanair Hard Landings - Reality Or Internet Myth?
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.21 день назад
Charlie has long argued that Ryanair landings are...well, harder than the average airline landing. I have argued that this is some internet myth, a meme that has gone viral with no basis of truth. So on a recent flight to Oslo we decided to scientifically put this to the test. With interesting results! CHAPTERS 📸 trvlswthchrl 🔔 Subscribe for more video releases - ruclips.net/user...

Vesuvius, Italy: How Hard Is It Go By Train, Bus & Walking?

A City Like No Other In Europe? Discovering Naples, Italy

Our 'Grand Tour' of Italy moved further south and hit Naples. Somewhere between Rome and Naples an invisible line was crossed, as Naples has a feel unlike other cities I have visited in Europe. Loud, exciting, busy, edgy. Enjoy. Oh, and then we ended our stay in Naples with a ferry to Sorrento. CHAPTERS 📸 trvlswthchrl 🔔 Subscribe for more video releases - ruclips.net/user/travels...
Take Our Quiz On The World's Smallest Country - Vatican City

Stunning But Spooky - Highgate Cemetery, London
Просмотров 1534 месяца назад
I've been wanting to bring Charlie to Highgate Cemetery for ages, and finally we made it. If you haven't been then it is well worth the trip into North London. Hainault Loop - Discovering Unexpected Surprises On The Central Line
Happy 2025! Good to see you both again! As someone who regularly does 4.5 - 5 hours from Cornwall to London, I would ALWAYS take the train. Arrive in the centre and it's probably only 20-30 minutes longer than getting to Newquay Airport and then into Central London from Gatwick. If you fancy a Cornwall visit (and another train trip), then we would love to see you both. Paddington to Truro and I could collect you from the station :) x
Weird about lack of free water. I wonder if anyone knows the reason behind that?
Yes it was odd when hot drinks were free
Your map is a lie, borth Oslo and Stockholm is just south of the 60th parallell, but your map shows Oslo as far north of Stockholm, a false map as north is on the right and not on top. Distance is 530 km /330 miles
Er…it’s a Google map. I don’t think it is a lie, just the way it is angled to get Oslo and Stockholm in
What was the difference in price? For me that would have been the determining factor though I admit just getting on a train and staying on for nearly 6 hours is less complicated/less hassle. Did you consider the bus option as I believe that takes 7 to 8 hours?
We paid £59 for two of of us, one adult one child. Airfares seem to be about £50 for two when I checked 2 months ahead but then you need to get to/from airport. That seems to be about £16 in Oslo and £25 in Stockholm, children free on both, cheaper options available. So that’s more like £90 all in, so train is cheaper. As for bus all the way, it’s a big no from me. Trains are way more fun and comfortable 😀
I actually thought Oslo - Stockholm was much more than 5 hours, thank you for the video :-)
5 hours felt like a long time!
@@TravelsWithCharlie It is indeed! But I always thought Oslo and Stockholm were so so far from each other, that it would be more 10-12 hours 🤣🤣And I live in Denmark
Train 9 times out of 10 (except if connecting to another flight). The train has free WiFi, and it is way more comfortable to get work done on a laptop or read a book on the train than with the plane option. Also possible to bring liquids in your backpack (saving the additional time needed for checking a bag on the plane). And better for the climate! Nice and informative video, despite the sometimes shaky camerawork!
I know, apologies on the shaky filming. Must have been a bad camera setting as nothing else was different. Totally agree on train over plane though
I liked the lit globes and the light show but tbh it's hard to beat London simply because of the sheer amount of museums galleries architecture parks etc which are accessible
In a To-Do head to head London wins hands down but Oslo was a nice place to visit, very chilled
@TravelsWithCharlie also I think I'm being unfair as Oslo is a tenth of the size of London maybe a fairer comparison would be somewhere like Geneva
A little bit unfair maybe…😂
It's funny, when I was a kid we used to go to Norway to buy Flour, Sugar etc, since it was so cheap there then. When I was a youngster it was very popular to fly to London over a weekend, partly because things like clothes and records could be found that weren't availible here in Sweden, but also since everything was so cheap. For a real chocker in Norway, order a Pint of Beer and buy a pack of Cigarettes.
I did buy a beer, it wasn’t cheap. I’ll take your word for cigarettes being expensive
That Fram museum looks cool, wish I'd known about it. But I have been to an opera at that building you walked over. 🙂 If you go back to Stockholm you should try the Vasa Museum.
Can’t believe we haven’t done the Vasa museum despite two trips to Stockholm. Next time…
Great comparison and as always, great video.
Thanks so much, glad you liked it
Hi, thanks for this video! May I ask - your cabin had one bed and three seats? And you had it all to yourself? Does one person sleep on the bottom three seats? Many thanks
I think it was a 2 person room, not sure if there was a 3rd bed or not. The seats were converted to a bed where I slept and then back to seats in the morning. We had it to ourselves but I booked it that way, through OBB I think.
Thank you 🙏
It was a beautiful trip by the way, amazing scenery. Enjoy 😀
So in our last video we flew Ryanair and wondered if it was true about their hard landings, or an internet myth? This time we flew SAS and landed as smooth as butter. So was it the airline, or was it the weather (it was windy in Oslo for the Ryanair landing) or maybe as someone suggested it was a Boeing (Ryanair) vs Airbus (SAS). What do you think?
I'm sticking with my theory that it's the type of aircraft! Having to pay for extras onboard like water makes a huge difference to the experience, although I've flown SAS a handful of times and the experience was generally good. Who Dares Wins! 😉
@talhay7893 I need to do some research here 🤔
Flown with them many times for many years, can't think of a particularly hard landing ever. can think of some very cheap flights, like the one this Thursday to a canary Island for £16
i've done over 100 flights on ryanair over the years, and I don't think their landings are any harder than any other airline. landings are dependent on weather conditions
I’m sure that is the case, it was a scientific study of 1 on a windy day 💨
I've never flown Ryanair, so I can't comment on that, but I have landed twice at Oslo and both times it was rough, with different airlines! With your experimental result as well, I'd suggest that is practically scientific proof that it's the airport not the airline. 😉 As for Stansted, I have never flown from there. Once you add on all the additional costs and travel, it's not so cheap anymore. And I'm one Superloop Bus away from Heathrow! Interesting video, thanks! 😊
Ha, are you questioning the science behind our testing? 😂 Ryanair hard landings are definitely an internet thing and this was hard. I’m not keen to go out to Stansted again to test Ryanair multiple times, it’s too far
@@TravelsWithCharlie No no, of course not, it was very rigorous! 😁
@talhay7893 🤔
@@TravelsWithCharlie I think that if we truly want to make this objective, we first need to define what constitutes a firm or hard landing. Only then can we have a truly non-subjective opinion. I have never flown with Ryanair, but that didn’t seem like a hard landing at all. It actually looked like how a normal landing should be. Soft? No, but landings aren’t supposed to be soft.
It was harder than normal in my books, could be harder I agree but I am happy not to experience that 🤔
Financial Quarter is south quay (DLR) btw!
Ah, thanks. It’s so long since we made that video that I can’t remember but I will check it out and ask Charlie.
Great verdicts guys, I have to say my favourite was in Naples and a classic Margarita. The Rome one did look a banging pizza though!
We had an even better one a few days later in Sorrento but didn’t film that night. Rome pizza was good though
Went from Naples to Venice on the train, one of the best services I've experienced. Great video again.
Thanks, glad you liked it. That’s a long journey. 5 and a half hours? It’s a nice train for a long journey, except for the snack box!
Cool adventurer girl, exploring the underground..... great work on documenting love it
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 🙏 (except Charlie is my son 😂)
@ yikes oops 🤣
You’re not the first…
Nice video, I've rarely used that branch line, so it's nice to experience it vicariously! I found your channel recently and am very much enjoying it, Charlie is great! I bumped into Geoff Marshall once, on his way back from his HS2 Chiltern tunnels vid, lovely guy. I hope he finds your channel. :) I love your international travel vids too, your Vesuvius hike was great.
Thanks, glad you like it. Never met Geoff but one day our paths will surely cross.
I ride the Northern line every day!
I grew up on the northern line so I have a soft spot for it
#myitaly ahahah😊❤
Charlie is so cute!
Watching this video after the Vesuvius one I know I'd definitely prefer Pompeii but thanks for both uploads as it was interesting to see both
Yes Pompeii for me every time. Charlie was focused on Vesuvius though. I’d like to go back to Pompeii out of the summer heat and people.
Took the train from Vienna to Budapest. Had reserved seats 113 and 115. Guess what, the seats only went up to 108. The conductor was mystified and told us to ring the ticket office for a refund. My advice: 1. Fly. 2. If you take the train, print your tickets, because as soon as the trip is over, any evidence of your reservation disappears if you download it to your phone. Never again.
Oh that’s not good. A shame to fly though, train travel makes more sense between cities like Vienna and Budapest
Nice little video. Thank you for sharing. I’d like to go to Switzerland via train, so it’s good to know it’s possible in one day. I didn’t know the Swiss used a different socket, either. Good to know 👍
Yes I had no idea on the plugs, wish I’d done my homework before leaving! It was a long day by train but a lovely way to travel. Got for it
Did you spot the rare Edward VIII pillar box adjacent to the Grade II Listed K6 telephone kiosk immediately outside Wanstead Station? Redbridge Station is also Grade II Listed although it's pre-war Holden design was considerably watered down in construction because of post-war austerity measures.
I don’t remember that. It’s a while since we filmed there, so my memory is a little hazy. Redbridge was good but not quite Piccadilly Line level.
Seems a little rough and ready. "Lemonade with open thighs" is simply one of the weirdest signs I've seen. The metro seemed pretty good. Interesting to see Vesuvius can be seen. Thanks for the upload
Yes it was a strange sign but I guess it got people to stop and buy. It also served as a warning when you drank it 🤔
Thank you. Please give the website that I can book train tickets for Italo or Trenitalia
Hi, you an book Italo here www.italotreno.com/en and Trenitalia here www.trenitalia.com/en.html There might be some sites like Raileurope www.raileurope.com/ that offer both, but I am not 100% sure on that. Good luck
Meanwhile sealed is the smallest country
"The Principality of Sealand is an unrecognized micronation" says Wikipedia and I'm sticking to Vatican City being the smallest 😉
@@TravelsWithCharlie ok
Im wondering if there are any times or days when its less busy. Id like to see the Colosseum but for me it would be a single visit only. Thanks for the upload
I’m guessing that Rome in August is just a bad idea. The Forum was quiet late on when we went that evening so maybe the Colosseum would be as well? Otherwise just avoid the peak summer season if you can.
0:37 CORGI!!! ❤
Indeed. I can’t say I had spotted that detail 🤔
I'm from Bologna, some year ago I was in Netherlands and hungry. I found a restaurant "Brownies and downieS". I tried their meatballs and when asked how they were I answered "Very dense". Dense in Italian is heavy, you made a good Italian mistake and the weather can't ne angry. Unfortunately I can't say the same with the down dutch waiters 😅
Hahaha. I’m going to use dense for hot weather in future now. Not sure about your Dutch restaurant though, the name doesn’t sell it to me 🤔
@@TravelsWithCharlie Brownies & Downies is a chain of restaurants primarily operating in the Netherlands with a single branch in Baarle-Hertog, Belgium. As of 2024, the franchise consists of 59 locations, all of which primarily hires those with learning disabilities in an effort to de-stigmatise them and provide opportunities to those with them in the hospitality industry
Ah OK, the name makes sense now. I don't think we have anything like that in the UK, but I like the idea. Next time in the Netherlands then
I am considering doing this trip from Stockholm to Tallin. Will this ferry go to Riga as well? Thank you!
The ferry we caught was just Stockholm to Tallinn. It didn’t go on after that and I’m not sure if there’s a ferry direct to Riga, sorry
the old porticoes seem essential for a nice visit there even in cool seasons as they are architecturally and aesthetically pleasing imo
They really do work, especially after walking around Rome in full sun a few days later 😂
Very Nice and guess was worth the wait after 369 days
It was a very dramatic setting, and worth the wait, yes
Why not taking the ÖBB Railjet trains? Taking an EC train is always a bit of an adventure.
We took whatever train there was. The OBB trains looked very smart but that wasn’t our train. Not sure how you would know beforehand
BERGAMO, VICENZA, CREMONA ,MANTOVA.Ma ogni città in Un Talia è stupenda
I’ve been told Bergamo is lovely. Will go one day
I love Bologna.
I’d happily go back. Again!
That's north italy. Too busy, too many people, too many foreigners. Try visiting smaller towns, even better go see south italy.
Er, I am one of those tourists. I have to be careful complaining about tourists ;-)
@@TravelsWithCharlie well said. I am sure you are not one of those tourists. You seem much more pleasant.
Bologna, my beautiful city ❤
We loved it 🥰
Verona, Bari, Matera
Never been as far south as Bari. Is it nice there?
What luxury you expetced for 17 EUR on an international train?
I didn’t expect any luxury or even a seat. Just people to be a little less selfish
Which Italian city do you recommend visiting? There's all the obvious ones - Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples - but how about the lesser known ones?
Sicily (I love Catania), Verona, Trieste.
Oh, your the second person to mention Verona. And Sicily is on my list, one day I will get that far south
A third time in Bologna, and let me know when, I offer you a free walking tour through the city secrets and one ice cream in a local good artisanal gelateria (venchi is just a franchise). If you come to Italy the best way to enjoy it is having a local friend and with your final choice you have made one 👋
When she said "the curtains" early on, it flashed me back to Monty Python & the Holy Grail.

Enjoyed this video. How clean were the bathrooms on both?
Good question. Sadly it’s been a year and I can’t remember but I think they were good. Travelled on Trenitalia again this summer and the toilets were fine 👍
@@TravelsWithCharlie Thank you !
Thanks for the video. It looks different from what you'd expect and worth a visit imo
Definitely worth a visit if you can get there
