Your destination for Farm and Outdoor adventures.
Greetings and thanks for tuning into Schmitz Farm & Outdoors! I'm Max Schmitz, a native of NE Wisconsin who grew up spending all his free time in the outdoors. It's no secret that raising pheasants and training my dog Harper to hunt them are some of my favorite hobbies. However, I also get lost in the woods going after Whitetail deer, Turkeys, Grouse, Coyotes, and Black bear. I know a thing or two about Salmon, Walleye, Bass, Perch, Trout, and Sturgeon as well. Don't forget the waterfowl such as Canadian geese and the numerous species of ducks in the area. The possibilities are endless!
If you can find it outdoors, chances are I can too. Follow along, join me on an adventure!

DIY European Buck Mount
My first attempt doing a DIY European buck mount on my archery season 4-pointer! A very neat process and I learned a lot throughout the process. See the video ending for your own DIY instructions.

Pheasant Pen Maintenance with 10-Week-Old Birds
Просмотров 3815 месяцев назад
Routine maintenance in the pheasant pen with our 10-week old flock of 60 plus pheasants. They are halfway to being fully grown. We typically like to switch up their structure, turnover dirt, and add lots of perching logs for them to roost on.
Putting Blinders on Pheasants - 8 Weeks Old
Просмотров 7295 месяцев назад
This video shows the process of putting blinders on pheasants. This is done to protect the birds from aggressively pecking each other. Putting blinders on the birds does not harm them. The best time to do this process is from 5 to 8 weeks old. It's a quick, easy, and rather interesting process!

The pheasant chicks move from their small box in the garage to the outdoor pheasant pen. As fate would have it, they have the odds against them with heavy rain and flooding shortly after making the move.

How to Bird Dog Train || Rooster Pheasant SMACKDOWN
When still under heat I feed my ornamentals grated cheese as a daily treat .The results are spectacular .....they grow much quicker and plumage cover comes on strong .
That's so interesting! I met someone who raises and releases them for hunting. They let the females go into the wild early then later release the males knowing that they'll automatically seek out the females who are already acclimated to the wild. That's in Minnesota.
I used to do this to my mother's chickens when I was a teenager in the 60's. Put them all to sleep, lay them all down on their backs in the pasture, and then run to the house and tell mom that "something is wrong with the chickens". Worked a couple of times before she figured out what i was doing. They stay 'asleep' for a few minutes....
@@steveparmelee5405 Haha, great story! 😂
you guys should put up those clear plastic similar to roofing tin.. those plastic roofing will stop wind and rain from getting into your coop
Nice! Were you in a tree stand?
@@Schubox62 I usually hunt using a climber tree stand, that’s what I did for this hunt.
Morons for.pushing ice under water. Im a mn spearer and you guys should be pulling ice up so nobody falls in or cars, snowmobiles run into it. Takes way longer for hole.to ice overpushing it under ice
Excuse me sir, i have a tiny baby pheasant who will only eat boiled egg. What would you suggest?
Pheasant chicks need high protein feed as they grow. Try searching for crumble feed that is 20+% protein.
Cool video! I have 5 pheasants right now, (2 roosters and 3 hens) I hope to collect a few eggs in the spring and hatch them. I love what you've done with the structure in your pens. I'm going to steal that idea!
That’s awesome! I’d suggest you try building a pen structure for your pheasants before you start collecting eggs.
❤
This is awesome! I just ordered 60 birds
That’s great! Make sure you have a good set up for them before they arrive.
Where can i buy the blinders?
Amazon is the easiest place to find them. I prefer the clip on style over the pin on ones.
Just found your videos. Excellent info! I have a few chickens and was wondering, if I have a chicken that’s broody, could I put a fertilized pheasant egg under her and would she raise it? I’m in Appleton so not far from you! Love the videos! Thank you!
Glad to hear that you found my channel! Yeah, I think if you put a fertilized pheasant egg under a hen chicken, you could probably get it to hatch. Never tried it myself though.
Where am i
Beautiful animal
This guy is the real deal
You only need 1 cock bird to 10 hens ideally
That’s true. With this being an outdoor pen, I wanted to keep more roosters just in case I lose one or two of them to critters or other circumstances. Luckily, that never happened.
@@schmitzfarmandoutdoors I suppose the plus side is your risks of laying infertile eggs reduces
@@lewisclayton271Yes, that’s another good point. I didn’t experience significant problems with infertility. Around 80% of the incubated eggs hatched. It probably would have turned out better if the birds were kept inside a barn.
Congrats 🤝👍
The weather I saw in other videos you made did not look like Hollister CA weather. Where are you?
You always end up answering my questions,I just need to watch, listen and be more patient.😂
@@Ceci-kj9ce Great to hear, I love informing my audience about pheasants. Raising them is a neat hobby.
@@Ceci-kj9ce Nope, not located in CA. I’m in the Green Bay, WI area. Lake effect snowfall in the winter can make things interesting.
What do you do with the rest of the quail? Do you butcher or let them loose?
@@Ceci-kj9ce Most of the pheasants are released into the wild, used to help train hunting dogs, or kept for breeding next year’s flock.
how can we stop bitting backyard each other
Do you like sell them for meat or what
Been keeping chicken/ bantams 60 years this is just cruel only in the USA they do this my dad used to breed pheasants you don't need to do this
That head thing always makes me giggle!
Haha, yes it’s like a gyroscope effect! They keep their heads in a fixed position while their bodies are in motion.
Wow, I got 30 ringnecks this spring, most of them died, only have like half a dozen left in my pens. Very beautiful and tasty birds indeed!
Ah that’s unfortunate that you lost that many. Yes, they’re very beautiful indeed!
we used them on chickens but they were red tinted so the chickens didn't eat each other, when they saw red, because they saw it all the time.
Great video! Keep going!
they still make chicken blood glasses, I didn't know they eat their own
He's letting us know when they'll ready to eat. 😊
Found your video while looking at which peepers to buy, have birds at 8 weeks old getting really aggressive
@@superdavepumpkinpatch5205 Nice, 8 weeks is the perfect timeframe to put blinders on your birds.
How is everything going with the pheasants? Where did you purchase the peepers from?
@@ajalicea1091 The pheasants are doing well! Peepers were purchased from Amazon.
They can eat, drink, and see everything except for what's right in front of them, thus preventing fighting and bickering
looks hella painful atleast the edges could be rounded considering this is injection plastic molded
Better than them scalping each other
Birds will peck each other...to death. Even chickens will peck each other to death if its allowed to continue.
I know they have to be protected. Interested to see what happens as they get bigger. Still feel sorry for the little guys though.
Chicken glasses .
I have some very old ones .
That seems cruel..
people are stupid, it’s a big uncomfy but it’s better than them losing their eyes, and birds have enough visual range to still move around without bumping things
Unless there actively Pecking each other I wouldn't be using that garbage never had to many problems correcting the behavior
Same but then again I have quails not pheasants
Ok I don't know anything about birds. Do they have more peripheral vision that they can still move around and know where they're going? I get that this is to protect all the birds, I'm just not wrapping my head around how they can still function like a normal bird when they can't see in front of them. Can someone explain this, please??
Idk about pheasants but chickens can see 300° around themselves, i assume pheasants are the same cause their eyes are on the side of their head. They dont have any problem walking around or eating, they just can't peck accurately to hurt other birds.
Most birds have insanely good peripheral vision, especially prey birds like pheasants, chickens, turkeys, etc. He’ll be just fine
Most prey animals have more peripheral vision in general. These blinders do obviously impact their forward vision, but they adapt and get by just fine.
It looks horrible but i can understand why it nedds to be done, its better than birds with missing eyes or feathers being ripped out
Well the other option is just not rearing birds in such high density, improving genetics, and giving them better feed to improve nutrition. Obviously consumers won't front that cost though (as long as thet don't have to witness the inherent cruelty).
V E R Y C R U E L
Would be more cruel to let them get their eyes ripped out by another bird bc they fight if they see each other
@@scrimblo1999dont bother these morons dont know their ass from a hole in the ground, probably think food comes from the grocery store.
People dont understand that they ran experiments to raise flocks without blinders or beak trimming and they lost 20% of individuals due to cannibalism. Then people wont spend the extra $1 per pound it'd cost to change stocking densities or improve breeding to reduce the issue of cannibalism.
@@scrimblo1999why not just separate them? Genuinely asking. I have quails, never had to use this, never had issues with pecking really. So I am curious not trying to be rude or judgmental
Cruel
Less cruel than allowing them to peck each other’s eyes out because they can see each other
That is stress ...
Ow my god what amess 😮😮😮😮😮
you are in hot water dog
Very dangerous! An obstruction is easy with this behavior. Get him a crate!
Harper needs a crate😅
I would never leave the dog alone in the house ever again.
How much money for baby pheasant I interested can u send to me
You are cruel
