The Prince Album That Stopped Me In My tracks
Recently, I listened to all of Prince’s albums in chronological order and was amazed at just how creative he was right until his very last album. However, the mammoth task of listening to all 39 albums in Prince’s discography was made much harder when I hit The Gold Experience, which was released in 1995. I got hooked on this album and found it hard to move on to the next. There are some great songs on the album, including the hot single The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, and Prince sounds like he is loving every moment. In this video, I take a look at Endorphin Machine, We March and Shy.

Quark was a single. Sadly it didn't chart. It got them a rare TV appearance on Marc Bolans TV show. Guitarist Dave Brock declined to appear though. This is a re recorded version for the show. Bob Calvert 'playing 'guitar. ruclips.net/video/lFPLgGWMndc/видео.htmlsi=fLVodoe8CTr16iRS I was always surprised by the constantly changing sound of Hawkwind. This is largely a result of the constantly changing line up. However, from the 90's onward the sound did settle down to a largely rockier sound with programmed drums which made the albums harder to get in to. The live albums though continued to sound terrific. Other records to listen to include. Hawkwind -1970. Debut lp. Mostly experimental, I suspect Hurry in Sundown would appeal to you. In Search Of Space.1971. Rockier, trippier considered very influential. Doremi Fasil Latido. 1972. First album to feature Lemmy. Much heavier in places but again we hear acoustic guitar on Space is Deep and the delightful Down Through the Night. Space Ritual 1973. Live and extremely loud. A wall of sound in places. The only lp to make the top 10. Astounding Sounds Amazing Music. 1976. Cleaner poppier sound which for the most part didn't appeal to Dave Brock. Led to big divisions in the band and sackings. Chronoglide Skyway is glorious. Levitation 1980. A rockier sound with drums from Ginger Baker. Nice production. Whose Gonna Win the War is the epic for me on this.

I did first hear this in 75. At school. Blew my 15 year old mind and I played it non stop for a while. Tracks like Assault and Battery/The Golden Void and Magnu have remained in the set to this day. Always sounding a bit different depending on who was in the band at the time. Hawkwind did tour this entire record again about 15 years ago and played it in its entirety. Great show.

I think your surprise and confusion stems partly from the order you have been listening to their albums. This was their fourth studio album (second with Lemmy). It was the first Hawkwind album that included an accomplished keyboard player, so the tone shifted quite a bit from what came before. Part of the fun with this band is not knowing what was coming next. They never fail to surprise. The album before this was called Doremi Fasol Latido and on that you will really hear the Lemmy that you might have anticipated. However, Lemmy himself said he preferred Hall of the Mountain Grill. They just completed a short tour of the UK this month. The band is better than ever and their last two studio albums are really VERY good. I know you went forward from here to Quark but I do recommend going back to the start and playing those first three albums before venturing further forward.

Thank you for the recommendation. I really wasn't expecting to like Hawkwind, and after listening to these three albums, I am really getting into them. Followed them since 1970. Saw them play most of this album in 1975 at the Reading Festival. Didn't need drugs. Live shows were and still are a complete trip. Many fans consider this album a high point. First reactions at the time were always complex. Looking for the messages in the lyrics, trying to figure out where the new sounds were coming from (i.e. what gadget or instrument). Soaking up the cover art. It was the whole deal, not just a band to us, more a complete aspirational lifestyle. Wanting to be part of the clan. Of course today everyone just remembers that this was Lemmy's last album, but it only came out three days before he was sacked so we had barely had a chance to hear it before we knew he was gone. And even though he had sung on Silver Machine and was an amazing contributor to the band, he wasn't the "star" of the band in most of the fans eyes at the time. He was just one of the family and we had already seen at least a half dozen other people come and go. I think the press made more of it than we did at the time. It made no difference to me as to whether I would sleep outside in the rain for two days to see them. (Which I did). The song Motorhead wasn't on the album and I'm not even sure they ever played it at a show while Lemmy was in the band.

Great to see this video. I've been a Hersh obsessive for a long time, and after all these years, I'd call it--at worst--one of the two best albums she's ever made, but most of the time, I'd say it's her best. warrior on the edge came after hall of the mountain grill and was Lemmy's last on bass , his bass on warrior was very low key for him i think he knew by then his time with hawkwind was coming to an end . on this album he was still confidently playing his driving power bass style . Simon House joined for this album and his synths , violin and mellotron made sublime tunes beautiful , he was classically trained and i think lifted the band massively . for Lemmy's bass you must listen to Space ritual live and Doremi fasol latido where he really makes his mark in the band . he never played bass ever till Dik Mik said he plays bass when Dave anderson didnt show up for a free gig in Powis sq Notting hill he stole the gig and anderson's place in the line up . I think the problem with Tormato at the time was that it was a far departure from the quality of work people were used to from Yes. By today’s standards, sure…it’s nice. But putting it up to The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Relayer and even the come back of Going For The One, this was the worst of all of those (I dare say that at least for first 2 albums had more heart because they were hungry). Topographic Oceans is very tightly constructed, not rambling. Most of it is quite logical-- two or three songs, instrumental passages that reoccur-- and occasionally it's quite instrumental and experimental (which bothers fans of more mainstream prog). For me, that's why it's the best album they ever did. They get outside the pop and rock formula and even the progressive rock formula! They get mellower than they ever did before (The Remembering), more dissonant than they ever did before (The Ancient), more bombastic than they ever did before (Ritual), and even more blatantly metaphysical than they ever did before (The Revealing Science of God). I got no complaints with that album at all. But Relayer is my second favorite album by Yes, so I'm not complaining there either. Their "high prog" period has always been my favorite period of the band.

I just listened to the whole album this morning. I was feeling a bit depressed, and even though I don't listen much prog rock nowadays, it appeared on my mind and it was the perfect choice. They are very happy tracks, but the surprise and awe element present in so many yes albums is also there. It made me excited about life again and ended up going for a nice walk in cloudy Lima where I live. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that I first listened to this album when I was 15 and discovered prog rock through it (and Fragile). It could be the connection to those happy times. But I really enjoy every single one of the tracks in it. I love how they make me feel. And I appreciate how inventive each of them are too. It doesn't make much sense to me to compare Tormato with other albums... it's just different. And stands out on its own.

Always loved Tormato. And it’s even dearer to me because when dad was alive, as a lad I’d mix plaster for him at weekends. He didn’t like the music I’d take on a cassette radio I had, he’d make me turn it off and just have the radio on. Then one day I took Tormato on tape and it was blasting away in this empty stripped out house. ‘Who’s this?’ He said. I told him and he said ‘Not bad, you can leave this on.’ That was the only time he said anything like that about the prog bands I was listening to.

RJG studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London, under Malcolm Lloyd-Webber (father of Andrew) and originally wanted to become a concert pianist. His first job in music was orchestrating the early music of Barclay James Harvest and conducting the BJH Orchestra (EMI, their record company saw the band as their answer to Decca’s Moody Blues).

I know PRECISELY what you mean when you compare them to The Flaming Lips. I discovered Super Furry Animals very recently and the Lips were the only band I could really find myself comparing them to!! Great review for a great album :))

CUPID & PSYCHE 85 is a MASTERPIECE! I played that record into a pancake when it came out and Still listen to it today! Exquisite chords, synthetic sounds, drums, & his voice is sweet & sexy as are the lyrics (& Green's face!) Indeed, worth a listen & praise!

Very underrated album. The production and sonic quality is superb. A lot of the prince fans prefer his funk, soul, and ballads… As well as his Pop! But he was very underrated as a rock musician and as you say, could do it all. I visited Paisley park last week. It’s mind blowing if you ever make it to Minneapolis, do yourself a favor and stop by Paisley park for a tour.

I can't imagine I would ever be in Minneapolis, but stranger things have happened. After your comments, I watched some videos about Paisley Park - I didn't know he had this cottage industry behind him helping him creata a total artictic vision. The more I learn about him, the more enamoured I become.

I have every album, both on the original labels and rereleased/rerecorded versions on their own label, up to 1990, all autographed. I was a member of The Stand (sort of fan club on steroids and a very early example of crowd funding) and stayed at their home (Claret Hall Farm) a couple of times as a star struck teen in the 80s. A couple of mates and I slept in their studio once when we couldn't get back to the Midlands after a gig in London. Safe to say, I'm a bit of a fan.

@@missedmusic101 They certainly are. FYI, I believe the live footage you showed at 1:08 is from Stonehenge festival, in the wee hours of 21/06/84, and the song they are playing is Wild Thing (an encore favourite). I was there, 17 years old and blissing out on shrooms and incredible music. The line up that night was Roy Harper - Hawkwind - The Enid - Hawkwind (again), then the sun came up for the Solstice. What a night!!!!
