Tasked myself with the challenge of riding to every cyclocross race Sandy signs up for, regardless of distance. Turned this one into a 100 miler which certainly added to the challenge. Lovely route on quiet B roads and cycle paths. Would definitely recommend as a good coast to coast route to try out. Such a useful answer comprehensive video. I also run really narrow handlebars and was wondering if I could ever fit a handlebar bag on. Mine are I think 34cm between the hoods. Did you have space to shift?
Always interesting seeing other people's kit 😁 One tip with things like sleeping bags is not to use their individual stuff bags but just jam everything in, packs a lot better. You do have to separate "wet" and "dry" items, usually easiest to use one end of the bike for each type. There's about 1kg difference between my "racing" setup and my comfy touring setup - mostly it's the sleeping/camping stuff, thick comfy inflatable mat, tent (shared between my wife and I), rather than DCF tarp and bivy bag. There's a definite lower limit to what you can get away with but above that it's mostly a matter of determining your level of (dis)comfort for the weather.
So a bag was a LIFE SAVER!
Haha, never knowingly under-dramatised 😂
What year madone is that it's nice.
I bought it second-hand in 2014, so think it's probably 2012. Raced and ridden it all over and it's still going strong 💪🏻
@@CharlieVanPoppel a credit to you 👍
Nice
Thanks 😀
Wonderful content! Very nice route.
@@yusuf5316 thanks!
Yeah love seening other RUclipsrs gear list
Who doesn't love a packing list! nice one Charlie!
Thanks Mark. I love watching kit videos 😊 This ended up a bit long, but hey!
Wonderful video :0)
Thank you! 🙏🏻
That was a great watch Charlie - inspirational stuff! 👍
Thanks so much! Enjoyed making this one 😊
Enjoyed that - thank you for sharing! Maybe 2025 🫢
The Rally is heading up to the (far) north west of Scotland next May. I'm sure you would love it!
@@CharlieVanPoppel I think I’ll be there!!
That certainly looked like you had to take a lot of rough with the smooth there Charlie, but with some incredible views, it must've been well worth it!
Ha Marcus, very true. A lot of rough sections actually, but worth the bumping around! 🙌🏻
I tried to do it last week, unfortunately the road between Corrour and Rannoch was completely flooded, so had to skipp that part and take the train. Because of bad weather I skipped the part to Killin off-road as well and took the paved road. Still a beautiful trip.
Oh, that's a shame that section was flooded. Glad you had a good trip! 👍🏻
Fantastic Charlie, what a great account of your Badger adventure! The view at 4:47 on the road to Corrour is the most epic of all views!! Love it ❤️. Would love to do this... if I was 10 years younger 😂
Thank Janice! Could you plan to do a shorter section and/or stay in nice places along the way? As long as you have a bike and can turn the pedals... 🤔
Nice video and channel, thank you!
Thanks Paulo 🙂
`Super stuff
Thanks so much!
That was a great montage, well done. I'm amazed you managed it on those skinny tyres. I tried it the other way around, from Glasgow to Inverness on an old Tri-cross bike with rim brakes and 38c tyres. I was carrying camping gear and my trip wasn't half as well thought out as yours. Despite the armageddon type weather, and been soaked 2the skin 24 hours a day, and being as minimal as possible; the bike was far too heavy. My brakes were completely inadequate and worn down to metal in three days. Forgot my spare blocks so scratched at Corrour, as no way I could attempt the "C" pass without brakes. Licked my wounds, came home &planning my return in a few weeks..on a different bike!😂 Was great to see parts that I've done myself through your excellent photography. Your wonderful post has fuelled my interest in going back. Well done!
Skinny tyres haha. Still 43cc so pretty good at handling most of the terrain. The HT would have been comfier at times though! I have my friend John to thank for the detailed planning and re- planning. Made a big difference knowing where we were resting, eating, sleeping each day.
Glad it has fuelled you for a re-take. Good luck, and let me know how you get on!
Very nice experience 👍
Thanks! 👍🏻
Well Done Guys Great Video
Thanks James! It was a bit of a Herculean effort at times 😆
Great looking adventure Charlie, I really should make an effort to do it myself. Lovely footage of a lovely area, thanks for the great video 🚲👍
Thanks for your comment Tony, appreciate it. A stunning and new - to me - area. Really want to go back to the Corrour area with the MTB. Hope you manage to cycle there, it is brilliant (and brutal!)
@@CharlieVanPoppel Yes, it's a beautiful area alright (well, IT IS Scotland after all ... ) I've MTB'd that area quite extensively many, many years ago, and also canoed it more recently. I've been plotting gravel routes up there too but I think I'd better take the full-suss too when the time comes 😁👍
That looked fab, a video would have brill, but the photo montage worked really good, makes me want to have a go anyhow, keep getting out and filming👍
Glad to hear it's inspired you Richard, enjoy when you get out there!
The piano music at 8.22 was wonderful with the images. Think I'll try this on MTB as opposed to Gravel. Thanks for posting :)
Thanks! Yeah MTB will be much more enjoyable, and the climbs (relatively) easier! Enjoy ⛰️ 🚲
Looks a great wee route, just love that area especially when the sun shines, unfortunate that doesn’t happen very often here in the west.
Scotland is so beautiful, especially when the sun's shining on it, great little vid Charlie!
@@marcusillingworth4682 thanks Marcus. The west coast is ace!
Stunning scenery that you have to stop and admire. Always a great excuse on steep hills.
ALWAYS stop on steep hills for a photo (rest!)
Lovely video and music with great scenery 🚲🙂👍
Thanks Tony. Was a good wee day, made all the better by the warm sunshine ☀️
Thank you so much what a beautiful ride! Thanks for sharing 😊
My pleasure. It's an amazing part of Scotland! 🤩
shame about the music. why?
Midges in 27 degree temp?
If I recall the info board correctly the woods at Tyninghame on the west bank are sort of artificially reclaimed land from sand dunes which is what the incongruent rhododendrons are about.
Ooh interesting, didn't get round to reading that. Such a lovely part of East Lothian.
The Fungle road is something else!!! Did it on the Pictish Trail last month. Thanks for helping me relive the memories/pain! :D
Well done Charlie 👏 That ride looks easier the other way around? You'd miss out on the wall of Talla but as a return 'favour' you'd get the tough climb from Traquair to the foot of Mountbenger Law! Great video 👍
Thanks Tony. It would be easier in theory, although I rode it in reverse once (with bikepacking bags on) and into a block headwind and it was brutal! Only realised on the (very steep) descent that my rim brakes were wafer thin 😮 Such a beautiful area though so worth it, I think ...
That's a lovely route in better weather, although at least you still kept your good humour (for the camera, anyhow...🙂) I do an extended version of it every year as an overnighter on my touring bike, it's a great area for cycling. Cheers 😁👍
Yeah, definitely had a sense of humour failure towards the end. No bike ride should be that wet for that long 😫 An extended version as an overnighter sounds fun 👍🏻
This looks so good!
Thanks Lucy, was v good 👍🏻😊
Another great video Charlie and lovely looking routes. I'll be up the Cairngorms later this year with my gravel bike and these two routes certainly look gravel-able 😀 Cheers 🚲👍
Totally gravel bike-able, enjoy! Hope the weather is better than today when you're there ☔💦💧
@@CharlieVanPoppel Thanks, I hope it is too ! Although, Kincraig is a 5 hour drive for me so whatever the weather I'll just have to get on with it. I'll be camping for a few days so I'm more concerned about the midges 🦟 🙏
I live in Perth and have ride n parts of the Route so Many Thanks I realy Enjoyed Your Videos
Thanks for your comment. Must be loads of nice stuff to ride round the Perth area 👍🏻
Well Done Everyone.
Another Good Day Thanks
Thanks James

Avery long day - definitely glad to arrive at the hostel and collapse!
Well Done Everyone
Thanks James ☺️
Great ride, and love the soundtrack.
Thanks Paul, appreciate your comment! 🙂
I love these videos! so many good memories, it's funny how i recognise random parts of the routes having only ridden them that one time. I think these videos are great and help jog old memories.
Aw thanks Mark, really appreciate your comment. Glad you've enjoyed them. It's so easy to forget the details isn't it - the weather, the people you saw that day, the food you ate, the amazing cheese you buy (!) so it's good having a permanent record and memento 🙌🏼
That looked to be a great day and a glorious route.
That looked glorious! Well done all concerned.
One of the most beautiful areas in Scotland, especially in the sunshine
That looked to be quite a challenge. All the best.
woah that looks mega....truly inspiring!!!
Thanks - all the great work of Calum Munro - the rally and route master. I merely rode the thing!
Just brilliant. Really obvious that you enjoyed that! Watching with a big smile on my face 😄 Thanks.
Did enjoy it, well most of it!!
This took in some of my favorite tracks joined up into a super route. It made for a great video.
Thank you! It was a banging route. A lot of new stuff for me which is always good 😊
What a great video!! Well done 👏 feel properly nostalgic now 😊
Thanks Gavin, really appreciate your comment! Think overall we lucked out with the weather too 👍🏼 The Cairngorms were magical in the sunshine ☀️
Brilliant work! Love it. One day I’ll have some commentary on my videos 😂 … also can we go back now please?
Ha thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed it. Definitely go for commentary! Good luck with the rest of your video making 🙌🏼 (also keen to hear more about all that amazing food you taste/review?)
