“A Clinchfield Christmas” | Railfans Gather For CSX’s Santa Train
On November 23, 2024, CSX hosted the 2024 Santa Train event in Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. The event is held in lower income communities for families to celebrate Christmas and the spirit of giving. We followed the train from Haysi, VA to Clinchport, VA with many spots in between. This year’s train was extra special with the addition of CSX’s Clinchfield heritage locomotive, attracting hundreds of photographers from around the United States. Engineer Scott Steffey, on his last run before a happy retirement, was at the helm of the train on this day. This made for an even more special day for him and everyone involved.

I put the phone into “vlog mode” while walking around doing live commentary… something i’m not used to for sure! Keep in mind, this is not the normal style of video that we do here at Blue Ridge Rails. In this video. Today we headed up to the Spruce Pine area to check out progress being made on CSX’s Blue Ridge Subdivision. While in the area we also took a load of supplies to Nick Whitson at O....

“Loading A Norfolk Southern Coal Train” Today, we’ll take an in-depth look at how coal trains are loaded in the Appalachian Mountains. We will follow the train down a “branch line” and then over to the coal loadout, where we will take the seat of the operator and load some coal. We also get to have a bird’s-eye view of the whole operation including the loading process. Our train is also sportin...

#wncstrong🫶 Last week, Western North Carolina experienced one of the worst floods in the history of the area. We ventured as far west as we could to continue documenting the impacts of Hurricane Helene from the air, and made it to the small towns of Spruce Pine, Green Mountain, Huntdale, Marshall, and Woodfin, before turning back east. We continue to pray for the families of WNC and especially ...

Copyright: Blue Ridge Rails 2024 Earlier today, Western North Carolina was hammered with (at landfall) a category 4 tropical hurricane. I tried to capture as many different places and events as possible, especially things related to high waters and flooding. Main places that we ...

Thank you i really enjoyed this video God bless you and your freends.
@@barefoot3662 thank you, i’m glad you enjoyed!
Good video, I just wonder what grade of coal is being loaded into the cars? Anyone have any ideas?
Great presentation love your videos ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸
@@randyroyston2461 thank you!
I am glad it doesn't go through Cumberland, MD to Keyser, WV.
Excellent documentary and happy you were able to make it before the Helene destruction. Thanks to all involved in the production.
Awesome video, well done, and always good to see American Coal mining!! ⛏️ 💪
I really love the fact they put a reef on #1902 for the occasion. It adds to the magical feeling and atmosphere of the Santa Train imo. Great video.
@@southern_railman better than a plain YN3 nose…. Thank you!
@ Yw!
Amen, thank you so very much, every year I follow Jaw Tooth as he chase the Santa Train, but Blue Ridge Rails you beat him to it this year. I've been watching this train for last 5 to 8 years on You-Tube. After the Hurricane hit, I wondered if CSX was going to run the train, I'm so glad they did, it was needed more than ever to give the Mountain people some hope. Thanks again, Blue Ridge, have a great Thanksgiving.
@@revharrycwigmoreiii5787 thank you for watching! We hope and your family have a great Thanksgiving as well!
My how times have changed !
Earth before fungus 👍🏻
Love the video man. The effort you put into the shots and the editing really shows. It has a great vibe to it. Keep up the good work! I rail fan a lot around East Tennessee so maybe I’ll see you out there one day!
@@AppyRails thank you, I appreciate the kind words! Hopefully so!
We all Railfans had an awesome chase and good people great train & awesome catches
@@zachbates6541 for sure!
Yes indeed
Thanks for the video that was very good
Why are the heritage units not leading it??
The leader is the Clinchfield Railroad Heritage Unit (#1902). The Santa Train train runs on the former Clinchfield Railroad which is why it’s leading. The Santa Train actually began as a Clinchfield Railroad event before mergers among other things brought it to CSX. It’s a good way to honor the old railway that started this tradition in the first place.
Great catches awesome chase capture and nice video
That Bridge from Red Hill was replaced 6 years ago. Surprisingly it still there. North Toe River still high. I was there August 5. You could see the rocks in the water. River never came over its banks.
I totally didn’t show up at 9:50! 😂
Thanks for helping out!
@@blueridgerailsyour welcome! glad I could meet you and a bunch of the other railfans!
@ always the best part!
Maximum gross weight of these hoppers, including the tare weight of the car and the load of coal, is 143 tons. 50*143=7150 tons. Not quite 7500 tons...
An elderly woman in Dante once told me that Christmas begins with the arrival of the Santa Train. The wonderful volunteers and merchants from Kingsport, as well as the continued support of CSX make this great charitable giving event possible. Many thanks to all. Thank you for posting.
It sure does, no problem!
Continued prayers for recovery and may you and yours have a Happy Thanksgiving. #SprucePineStrong #WesternNCStrong
4 Diesels to haul 12-passenger cars? seems like overkill X2 too me. I do love seeing the old heavy weights in action. I hated seeing the CSX Logo on the front of the Clinchfield Heritage unit, that was like throwing paint on the Mona Lisa. They could have embraced the retro paint scheme and just attached a CSX Banner along the lower front of the loco for their own publicity. 👍
Just the right guitar and naration to go with the images. Well done!
Nicely narated! Loved it.
Makes one proud to be a CSX shareholder.

Crazy crowd and awesome vibes. Did you have to walk through the tunnel that feeds into the load out to reach hayside.

@@donalfinn4205 do you want me to ride through the system with the coal?
All that COAL is less than the amount of energy a nuclear power plant can supply in a year
Good to see American coal still being mined.
Sigh! Not good for anyone but the owners of the mine.
It's also good for people who use electricity
@@benjamindover4033really? How’s that? So you don’t use electricity? How about steel? Can’t make steel without metallurgical coal. So tell me how the owners are the only ones that benefit? Sigh.
I’ve got a lot of questions about the song used in my latest video. This song was written by Rick Moreland and is available for download on SoundCloud below! suno.com/song/cbb0f440-ef38-43ac-a892-042d4ec6cff6

Really nice video! Praying for all that have been affected by this storm! May our great and loving God show His mercy and provide everyone with their needs and help with the recovery!
Well... now we know its an intermediate signal. Also, I saw in another video that it looks like the rail is going to take an entirely different path through Poplar, NC and as such it looks like new footings are poured for new bridge. I wonder how drastically different the signalling system will look on Clinchfield when all is said and done here?
Just goes to show the Power of Nature We are NO match for the Forces of Nature
