Many here are commenting that the solution is easy: just leave. And it is that easy…unless the abuser has managed to take away your self worth. When a person no longer feels that their life has any value, then leaving their abuser to save something worthless seems pointless. And if that abuser has managed to isolate their victim from friends and family, then the victim has nobody left to show them that their life has value and is worth preserving. At that point, even the thought of leaving no longer seems a viable option. If you suspect someone you know is in an abusive relationship, let that person know that you are there for them if they need help. That gesture alone can make a person realise that if someone cares about their wellbeing, that maybe their life does have value and is worthy of saving. Don’t be afraid to be the voice for the victim. Staying silent about abuse is what the abuser is counting on.

He wanted so much to be a good father and provider for his kid, but that was a dellusion. Years of abuse witnessed by his daughter meant that she grew to disrespect him, too. They didn't see the wonderful, caring, funny man that I knew and loved. They saw an ATM machine, a means to an end. a scapegoat, a punching bag. They killed his spirit. Love makes you do crazy things sometimes, things that other people can never understand. We're still friends. He's single now and doubts he'll ever be with anyone again. Sometimes I'm with him and I catch a glimpse of the happy-go-lucky person I once new. But 20 years of abuse has taken its toll. He's not the same.

A friend of mine went through this with his now ex-boyfriend three years ago. The ex beat him so bad my friend had 5 broken ribs, a cracked jaw, 3 teeth knocked out, two black eyes, a hairline fracture on the left side of his skull, a broken arm and a broken wrist along with a broken ankle. The ex-boyfriend got 20 years in prison for the assault and another 25 years for attempted murder.
