This commentary was so powerful and helpful. Thank you!
You two guys are right ON! Thanks for sharing Jesus' gospel!
I really like hearing from you guys. About the lectionary and John, is there more than one lectionary ? I'm asking because the readings you use and what happens at my church is never the same.
Thanks! I'm not sure why the lectionary passages are different. I compared the primary Protestant and Catholic lectionary texts for the past few weeks and they were the same. What Christian tradition are you?
Thanks, guys for your words! It encourages me when I get so upset at the political and religion of today. It helps to know what Jesus message was truly all about.
Oh dear it is very confusing and trying I live in Oklahoma
Sorry for the poor audio on Todd’s end. We’ll have it rectified next week.
Instead of command, agreement would explain it better. Both the father and the son have the same agreement. This is not hierarchical, rather relational. Perhaps the word command is used because we are the children of God ( this is the kind of language that is traditionally used in child parent relationships) not because I am better than my children, its just the role at the time ontill they develop a true sense of who they are, and their role in the relationship.
Great perspective. Thanks Jeremy
What a wonderful message.
Love this! Jeff is Amazing!! Special man.☺️
We agree!
A Bit disappointed, 10 minutes into the discussion. It feels like you are stuck on one aspect of the readings. I was hoping for something more general. Looking for more scriptural background. I'll try next week. I'm in agreement with your politics, just less judgmental.
Thanks for the feedback!
I'm wondering how many shepherds are there? It seems to me that if the shepherd dies the sheep are lost anyway. It would make a lot more sense if the hired hands were more like the 12 apostles
For me the appearance to Thomas give me hope in my doubts. Jesus says on Easter morning to "tell Peter" and here he is gracious to Thomas...and blesses us who have never seen and yet believe. I can only imagine how he would have related to Judas, had he hung around in the land of the living...and seen Jesus post empty tomb. Now that would have been a gracious story of justice and reaching out to those that have really messed up, even betraying Jesus in word and deed...and repented.
Republic, WA. We take in ex con’s, homeless, and mentally ill. Blessings in being His hands and heart. Thank you. K
Thanks for this. Very helpful in preparing for my house church ministry here at St. Columba's Celtic Catholic Church and Julian Cell.
So glad it was helpful, Patti! All the best!
Powerful. Thank you
Thank you for saying that being on the margins of social norms is not just loss. It has been the most lifegiving thing that could have happened to me. Social "privilege" is not actually privilege. It's a gilded cage that chokes out the conditions and opportunities necessary for spiritual growth.
Thank you very much for this new look at a familiar passage. Quite complementary to this parable is a reference back to the original Hebrew ideal where God’s people are represented as each family being stewards of “their” plot of land and where everyone sits under his own vine. (I say “stewards” because ownership was not absolute. Due to debt one might “lose” control over one’s land until it was required to be returned in the Jubilee year.) Additionally, if Israel sank into idolatry then everyone in Israel, guilty and innocent, would be exiled and those who remained behind were ruled by foreign absent landlords.
I always enjoy these discussion so much.
Thank you so much! Grateful to have you out there!
How would pastoral roles be differently viewed and carried out if the positions were not paid?
Sorry for missing your comment until now! That's a great question. It's hard to wrap my head around a way of being church that isn't run by the structures and hierarchies that are currently in place. I think churches would be naturally much smaller in size where someone with pastoral gifts could easily use those gifts while still being employed in another job. And other members of the church would be using their gifts so that, together, everyone would lighten each other's load. In that way, no one in the church would be looking to the pastor to do all the ministry. --Todd
Love the nuance presented in this episode . Really helpful 😊
Love this!! Especially the concrete examples of debt forgiveness today
As a mental health professional I agree re forgiveness. Its more important to process what happened, forgiveness may or may not be an outcome of that process. But it doesn’t have to be.
I love thé fact that Jesus didn’t come “pre-packaged” or “pre-fab”.
So happy to hear someone who talks to us about important stuff within the Gospels. Loving the talk between you both. And I learn so very much and read scripture so differently. Bless you both.💝🕊. Hearing and learning about the Good News. amen.
Love this!
I'm excited to find these. I hope you do them for a very long time!
Very informative, gentlemen. Always blessed by your inspired dialogue.
Thank you very much!
I'm definitely enjoying these discussions. Helps clearly bring the love and teachings of Jesus into focus for me.
Good discussion about participation in Spirit of loving rather than giving advice to others
Thanks for the life-giving words!
I thought that siren was here in Saskatoon. 😅
Love the hope in the here and now shared is this dialogue 👌
I love hearing you guys talk about the bible from the perspective of social justice. I have long suspected there was much more to Christianity than religion, and it just makes so much sense to me.
Thanks, Christie! It has been revolutionary for my life to see the heart of Jesus/justice that beats in the gospels. Jesus ceases to be something to believe in and becomes someone to follow. --Todd
I really resonate with the comments around thinking God requires us to do harm to others. That can be so confusing and truly shaming for any believer who feels in their deepest self that what they're doing is wrong.
Enjoyed the commentary and the banter. Thanks Herb and Todd. :)
Thank YOU Suzanne. : )
Well done Todd and Herb. Love the life-giving interpretation 😊
Thank you Jeanmark. : ) I appreciate your encouragment.
