Hey, this is Jamie. Thank you for checking out the Golfer Geeks RUclips channel. You can visit home base at golfergeeks.com
I'm an avid golfer trying to get better and enjoy myself in the process.
We will feature unboxing videos, reviews of clubs, training aids, and anything I think would be of value to golfers just like me.
I'll even include some on-course vlogging (maybe) and take you on my journey from a 10ish handicap all the way (with much hard work) to low single digits.
My goal is to provide value and maybe even a little entertainment. My face is the one you'll see mainly, but at some point, I plan on bringing on others for product reviews and updates.
We encourage comments and interaction. This is a place to have fun and learn a little. The views expressed are my honest opinions. It's completely cool if yours are different.

Best Ball Striking Drill Eva
This ball-striking drill-more than any other-gets me swinging my best. It produces better contact, more distance, higher ball flight, and more control. More details here: golfergeeks.com/my-most-favorite-ball-striking-drill-eva/
I recommend it to everyone I see who shows the slightest interest. It makes me a better player when I use it.
It has only one major flaw...

Could you test the newer Ben Hogan Edge EX? Game improvement
Can the spikes or tips be removed?
100%, Lionel
spikes can be removed?
Yes sir
Good review. I've been looking at getting one. Thanks for the info!
It's very sad that Hogan has gone out of business. I recently got my hands on a full set of Edge EX irons! I have managed to put together a full set; GS53 max driver, 3 and 4h, 4i-Pw, 50, 54, 58 wedges. I'm pretty stoked to have them! I haven't played with them yet. Now I'm not sure I want to play them. Only a couple if the irons have been hit. I'm fairly new to golf, 3 years into it. I'm glad I have them, though. I'm wondering about the PTx Pros, though.
Hey Russel. Sorry for the late reply. I think you have the right clubs. The PTx Pros or for lower handicaps and low-mid handicaps with good ball striking.
Terrible video of a simple trainer . Can't even show how it really looks and works. Talk about nothing .
how did you blow it up?
Just like you would a floaty for your kid
919 look so much better, single digit handicap, huh. How do they figure. I know a lot of high handicappers that have no problem hitting an iron.
The Titleist T-series irons are fantastic! I purchased a set of the T400’s about a year ago and it totally changed my game. My handicap fell dramatically and the amount of bad shots dropped as well.
Titleist has a good rep for their irons, but not good enough, in my opinion. You know once you hit them.
Are they narrow or not
not
Read your review, curious how its going at the moment, also saw you have the driver. Are you liking them all?
I swing the iron every day at home and still hit balls with it when I go to the range. Great for sequencing and tempo. The driver works better than I expected.
😜 þrðmð§m
How about the combo set with the edge irons?
That'd be hard to do. They'd need closely related irons and they don't have them.
How about the combo set with the new edge irons?
The Edge EX irons are meant for higher handicaps and upper-middle handicappers. The ICONs and PTx PROs are meant for low handicappers. Manufacturers don't combine clubs targeted for different handicaps.
I'm thinking about these. Since the 8-P in the PTX Pro set are already a solid construction, what made you decide on the Icons for 8-P?
I knew I could hit blade short irons and I wanted better control and accuracy. Plus, they look cool.
@@GolferGeeks That's my concern w/ the PTX Pros. Are the 4-7irons good on distance control? I have an old set of irons that are blade-like and I like how consistent the distances are off blades.
@@slytown I've had no issues with distance control. They are still player irons, just not blades. You can demo them through Hogan. Take out all the guesswork.
@@GolferGeeks Yea, I plan to do that. Thanks for the help.
I bought the Edge irons last fall and have been playing with them for three months. I love the way they look and the way they play.
Solid clubs at a bargain basement price.

Jamie I have a set of Hogan PTx Pro irons...So how do these new Edge irons stack up against them other then the Edge have stronger lofts??? Also been looking at the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal...can you do a review on these Edges vs Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal? Thanks....
The Edge EX irons are game improvement to super game improvement irons. Much larger clubheads. If you find the PROs too much to handle you may consider the EXs. Otherwise, I'd suggest you stay with the PROs
@@GolferGeeks Never to much to handle...I'm a Hogan-nite...Thanks...
What model grip do these irons come with?
Ordered my combo set 2 months ago, still waiting for arrival! Have contacted BH and told the shafts are on back order. They did offer a substitute shaft if I wanted, declined because I want the shaft they fit me too. At least another month. So if you are buying be patient. Thx for the review, can’t wait till mine arrive.
Sorry to hear that, Brent. I know we are in the midst of club buying season. I have a couple buddies ordering clubs from other manufacturers and they are waiting 2-4 months. That would drive me nuts.
Hi mate I just received my hybrid along with the new edge ex irons … look amazing. Just a question on the hybrid … when you put the black crown in the light you can see some sort of cloudy / bubbles in the paint work .. is yours like that …. And yeah it whistles too …. Ha
Hey JN. I do not see bubbles on mine. I'm assuming that may be a defect. Hit them up.
@@GolferGeeks yeah I’m sure it is a defect … what a shame …. I read your review on the edge ex … they do look fantastic straight out the box … are you doing a vid ?
@@jnnic8138 I might have to.
@@GolferGeeks they hybrid has been returned with no problems … The irons are fantastic… played with them twice … love them
@@jnnic8138 Glad they sorted you out and you are loving the irons
Would this combo set be ok for mid handicap players
Hey John, my opinion, you've got to be a strong ball striker and be an 11 handicap at most. What's your handicap?
Good info. I had a putting lesson today and my PGA instructor used this training aid. It was helpful for my stroke. I order one so I waiting for it to arrive.
It is awesome. I putt on it every day.
Question: If the Icons are shorter than the P790s and the PTx Pros are neck n' neck in distance with the P790s, does that mean you've got a weird distance gap between the PTx Pro 7-iron and the Icon 8-iron?
You would think that would be the case. It hasn't played out that way on the course. I've close to a dozen rounds in and I'm sticking greens pin high consistently. I've even got time on launch monitors (using range balls) and I haven't found awkward gapping. My plan is to get in a hitting bay with the premium balls I play and check for any gaps. I love the P790s, but they are not as consistent from shot to shot for me. I'll update with a post on my site sometime soon.
What's wrong with the name? Hogan pronounces it "vector"...
Not intuitive and that pronunciation doesn't appear on the VKTR page on their website.
@@GolferGeeks This video is an interview with Ben Hogan CEO at the time the original VKTR came out.. Listen at a minute and a half in.... ruclips.net/video/QGX1mWYbbJk/видео.html
@@GolferGeeks Also, "Vector" is a name used on older Ben Hogan Irons and shafts, but if you didn't know that, you would never make the link...
Have the icon as in all blades and love them, but was thinking in having the 4-5 as pts pro option too, what are the head sizes compared to the icons ? Don’t really like huge heads
Head size is similar. Hard to impossible for me to tell the difference at address
@@GolferGeeks good man, answer i wanted .. Thx
What the other makers don’t tell you about their springy faced jacked loft iron designs is that you have to have good speed to flex the face enough to get the high launches they tout. If you are a slow swinger like me, those jacked loft irons launch too low. I love how Hogan maintains traditional lofts (e.g. 34 deg. 7 iron).
Are the faces made of the same chromoly type steel as hybrids or are the faces soft 1025 steel? I like harder steel in the faces or else the grooves wont last more then 2 years if you're constantly on the range and playing.
Not 1025 steel. Forged MS300, whatever that is.
@@GolferGeeks ok, MS = Maraging steel, the same durable steel used on the faces of hybrids. A good thing as far as I’m concerned since I can’t afford to replace irons every 2 years.
One key design aspect of the Icons is the beveled sole. I found the Icon's sole more playable than traditional blades which tend to dig.
I can dig any sole into the dirt. I come into the ball too steep usually and take decent divots. Though, I am getting a little better
Just completed my demo. I loved both PTX Peo & Icon but will be going with the PTX Pros. Thanks for review
Great clubs. Hope you love them.
Don't see the swing videos with a. Did it help you improve?
I use it primarily as a tempo and timing trainer. It stays in my bag. Great for warming up pre-round. Here's my review: golfergeeks.com/lag-shot-golf-review/
@@GolferGeeks Thanks
how long did you wait to recieve these? i just put in my order for this set 2 days ago!
Just a few days.
@@GolferGeeks awesome!!! I ordered a fitted set, very excited to get them. My last set of fitted clubs were Pings back in 2015 and they took about 8 months to get. Hopefully these take 1-2 months maybe. I am located in the Midwest US so maybe the shipping from Fort Worth and the build time won’t be too long. Thanks for the review!!
hello mate - will you be getting hold the new edge ex irons ? look fantastic.. but waiting for some reviews ... also i am little nervous about delivery to the uk after reading some reviews about people waiting weeks and months after payment
Hey JN. I'm supposed to get them beginning of May. I'll enquire about UK delivery while I'm at it. There were pretty serious delays due to lockdowns. That should be easing up.
@@GolferGeeks great thanks mate - Really looking forward to getting a good idea of size etc .. currently play ap1 716 .. also like Wilson d7 forged .. which is obviously easy to buy in store over hear . Thanks again
I’m hearing there is already delays on the new edge ex .. you had any update ? Glad I held fire on ordering
@@jnnic8138 I have no word on an official delay, but I was supposed to get a set by now and that ain't happened. I'll enquire. Hope to get an answer in the next few days
This is what I just got in: Hey Jamie, yes...they are set to arrive here end of the week. We can start building pre-ordered sets as soon as they hit our factory in Fort Worth.
I’m still playing the original PTx from a few years ago. I can’t find a reason to change. Great clubs. Took me to scratch at 52 Y.O.
Good move. I don't believe in changing clubs just because.
Blades are the best teaching tool. I learn by playing blade and my ball striking improve significantly faster then my buddies
Talk about tough lessons to learn. It has taken me years to be able to hit them well. I've got the combo set and I'm loving it
Great review, but you also rave about the M5. I’m a 12 HC with a swing speed that puts me in a regular shaft. I demoed the 790’s in FL last month and loved them. But I could save a ton of $$ buying used M5’s although I haven’t swung them. What’s your recommendation? FYI I could probably also buy used 790’s since the current version came out in 2019. On eBay the prices are still high for used 790’s however.
I love the M5s. I found a better price on 790s so I got them instead. Also, the 790s are better looking than the M5s.
Currently waiting for my new P790s. Coming from traditional lofted clubs P770s circa 2017 (34 deg 7 iron) I'm wondering if you had to make similar adjustments in extra distance gapping ? Wondering if it makes sense to weaken the lofts a degree or 2. I am a 5 hdcp and have hit my 7 iron 150-155 for as long as I can remember. Hoping it isn't too difficult to get used to new yardages.
I'm still working on my distances, to be honest. I carried my 7-iron 165 yds forever. I've carried a few over 180 with my 790s and had similar experiences with other irons in the set. I've heard of people weakening the lofts, but I would worry about ballooning and loss of control. They go so high already because of optimized launch.
Did you ever review the Swingshot Cyclops Pro camera from a couple years ago? You unboxed it but I couldn’t find where you actually used and reviewed it
Hey Donald. I used it for a couple range sessions and found the video quality exceptional. The software was a little clunky at the time. I never got around to the full review.
Do you know if auto capture works with foam balls or if it only picks up sound of real balls?
Hey Brock. Never tried with foam balls.
Have u noticed u hit these wedges really low with lots of spin? I noticed the first step on the shaft is much closer to the hosle and it almost goes too low
For me, these aren't the highest spinning wedges but they work well for the conditions I play here in Houston. I hit them pretty much any hight I want. I usually try to flight wedges though.
I want to see what you find out. My experience is the iron yardages are good. The spin, launch, and apex are not accurate. Swing speed and ball speed is fairly accurate as well. My driver numbers are not accurate when compared to GC2. I’ve been off about 20 yards.
Me too. I've read positive things, so I'm hopeful.
Even those these were more than 3 years old when I got fit, they outperformed Taylormade's, Cobra's, Callaway's, and Titleist's models for 2020. They also felt better and were a little less expensive. Plus, they look great, especially for a game improvement iron. The only irons I think might have been close were the P790's, had I tried them, but those cost so much more
Club choice is SO personal. You mentioned 4 great brands that produce exceptional clubs. It ALWAYS comes down to what performs best for you or just your preference.
@@GolferGeeks Absolutely. I wouldn't say they're going to be the best for everyone, but it's still impressive that a 3 year old club kept up with the big boys
Hi, thanks for the video. I’m currently a 7 handicap and am looking between getting a set of all ptx pros or getting the combo set. How did you find the gapping between the 7 and 8 iron.
10 yard gap so far, which is my standard. It will take me a while to dial this in. I need extended time on the course when my swing is on. Do not take this as gospel
@@GolferGeeks yeah, it was just to get a feel of your opinion. was concerned that the pros would go a lot further and the gap would be to big from 8 - 7 but 10 yards is comforting to hear. Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
@@harryguarnori9941 Yeah, that's a valid concern. One thing helping make this less of an issue is the consistent gapping of 4*.
@@GolferGeeks thanks for your help and I enjoy the videos, keep it up👍🏻
@@harryguarnori9941 this is also my concern before ordering. i dont want a chunky topline wedge and i dont want a bladed 4 iron. but idk how the gapping works. maybe they bend the icons a degree strong or something. did you end up ordering and if so whats your experience with the gapping?
Best wishes from So Cal, and hoping that Texas gets through the current icy weather, and related power and water issues soon. And specifically Ft Worth, as I have a combo set on order and am so, so anxious to receive them. I'm a 15 index currently. Going with this combo set might be a reach for my level, but I'm fine with that. I did the demo program with PTX Pro, and while I only had 1 range session, they felt and looked great. For me, these clubs instill confidence and pride. And even if my index suffers some as I get used to them, it's a small price to pay if my golf enjoyment level increases. The irons will be replacing Titleist DCI 981's I have had for almost 2 decades. And the fairway woods I also ordered will be replacing (dare I admit it) Burner Bubbles. Obviously, I don't change clubs frequently. So I would say - if you are a mid handicapper like me (I think 15ish qualifies), and you are looking at the PTX/Icon Combo, and excited about them, go for it! They will look great in your bag. And if your index suffers because you aren't hitting them as flush as you hoped, get better at chipping and putting to even things out. :) Best, and stay safe.
Thanks for the well wishes, Jeff. We are good to go now. If you are happy with your clubs, I can not argue with that. They are a site to behold and I love mine. As for advising high handicappers to get player irons, I'm going to have to politely disagree.
GREAT question. I ended up buying the 4 - P PTX Pros for that very reason. I'm a 5 hcp. I sold my P790s (they were awful) for these and I may have never made a better decision. Just ordered the Texas Grind (brand new!) Equalizer wedges in 54 and 58 - gotta keep the Vokey 50...its money. Hi from Ottawa!
I received my combo set 3 weeks ago in chrome because I’m a traditionalist. At 68, I learned on blades as a 12 year old. Not sure what this “can’t play blades” nonsense is all about.
A lot of newer golfers are learning on equipment that is hugely forgiving compared to a bladed iron, so the sacrifice of that forgiveness is not worth it to many players who wouldn't even know how to work the ball or any of the other benefits blades have for better ball strikers. Could everyone play blades? Of course, but there just isn't a need for everyone too. I learned on my dad's old MacGregors but I still bought PTx Pros over Icons because I like having a little more forgiveness.
I bought this set a few weeks ago. Love them. I'm hitting long irons better than I have in quite some time. High, straight and long and no jarring on mishits. The short irons are great for those chopped off knock down shots into the wind. The quality is top notch and the black set looks really sexy in the bag, too. Try them!
Great to hear, Mitch. Sounds like my experience with them so far
The impact snap is completely out of view during video. I stopped watching because I couldn’t see what you were doing with it.
Eh...could have shown it more, but it shows up multiple times. Good to know though.
Looking forward to seeing the full review in a couple weeks!
Thanks, Matt. That may have been a little optimistic. I need to get it on the course for some "real" numbers. Hopefully 2-3 times
