Lathe Part I: Setting up a Lorch 8mm Lathe
This Lorch 8mm came to me as part of a watchmakers estate. The lathe was previously driven with a Singer sewing machine motor and foot pedal. The foot pedal was inoperative and the motor suspect and all the wiring would have had to be replaced anyway. I decided to use a modern variable frequency drive with 120V single phase input and 230V three phase output, driving a 1/4 HP 230V three phase motor with custom made pulley.
The purpose of the video is to show my process for getting a vintage lathe mounted and running again.
This was a mock up only - in the future I would like to make a more finished setup with a nicer baseplate, cable routing, and electrical switches.

How To: Change the Strap on a Nixon Watch

How to change the strap on a Nixon watch. There are a few unusual things about the Nixon watches in this video. First the lug widths are unusual, 23mm and 25mm which can make it difficult to find a replacement strap, and the strap is held with a bar and screw instead of a traditional spring bar. Two things I thought I would mention. I don't know about this specific lathe, but many machine tools are supposed to have wicks(felt) in the oil cup. They are there to slowly release the oil onto the bearing surface instead of it just running out through the tolerances. It looks like this is what you removed from the one oil cup missing the cap. You may want to get new ones and re-install. If heat joining the belt doesn't work you can use regular CA glue, but I have had the best luck with Loctite 438. It stays flexible and will last where regular CA is stiff and brittle.

    • @watchoffthecuff
      @watchoffthecuff 17 часов назад

      Amazing, thank you so much for the info. I originally thought that the felt like stuff that was in the oiler was there just ot keep dust and debris from getting in there (since the oiler cover was broken) - I think you are right, the previous owner was probably using it as a wick! Brilliant and thanks for the info! Also, THANK YOU for the suggestion to use glue instead of trying to melt the ends together - of course! - makes perfect sense. The Loctite 438 is a great tip also - I will use that when I'm ready to fit the new belt. Cant thank you enough for the comments and insight! - Super helpful!!!!!

    So where does one buy a new quartz movement? Certainly, there must be many different models and types... How would a person determine exactly what to buy, and where would they buy it? 🤔

    • @watchoffthecuff
      @watchoffthecuff 9 дней назад

      There are a number of movement sellers in North American and Europe. Once you get the calibre number off the movement (essentially the part number) you also usually for a quartz movement need to remove the dial and hands and measure the hour wheel (gear that connects to the hour hand), so you can purchase the correct height for the hands. They do this to accommodate different dial thicknesses.

    I needed to make micro adjustments on 2 watches and figured it would be possible to remove the spring bar with a paperclip. However, I took the spring bar totally out and couldn't work out how to fit it back in the watch. Searched YT and found this video and still had trouble - you owe me a manicure by the way - but managed it eventually with the flat end of a pen. Although eventually is shorter than never which was the way I was going on my own. For the 2nd watch I followed your instruction to the tee, i.e. don't take the spring bar fully out, and did it in a couple of minutes. Thank you very much Colin.

      As long as the crystal is dimensionally the same you will be fine, either Mineral crystal or Sapphire. However, if you plan to dive with the watch it should be pressure tested after the new crystal is installed to make sure it has maintained the watches water resistance!

    Colin, great stuff! Thanks for putting this video out. You mentioned that in some cases, replacing the movement may be the answer. I have a Seiko 8123-6009 I have had since 1980 (something), and it stopped. The battery made no difference. I'm just getting into "watch hobby repair," and the jeweler is telling me there are no more parts for this watch. Is there another quartz movement that will fit this case, or am I doomed?

Customer a few weeks ago that had a mechanical Seiko from the same era a 7009 I think and there was absolutely nothing available. Have you seen the quartz troubleshooting video I did? Wondering if it's just a bit jammed? There are devices you can use that listen for the impulse (to let you know if the timing circuit is firing) and another that lets you by-pass this circuit and possibly unjam the gear train! Question: What do you use yourself for removing cannon pinions? I would like to buy the Bergeon 4854, but I do a lot of small vintage watches and apparently the current version doesn't go small enougn (they say however for all caliber, but I think it's minimum 1,2mm or so). I don't like the green presto very much (not even upwards motion for when there are long delicate seconds pinions). Thanks in advance! Glad we're able to ask these questions to a true professional.

      Great, great question - you are right on about the Bergeon cannon pinion tools, expensive and not a one size fits all solution which is why I never bought one! I have at least one presto tool...maybe 2? (I'll have to check.. hahaha). I use a good set of tweezers, steady hands and patience - and have never had a problem. I can't think of a really difficult cannon pinion removal I've had to work through though... so not sure what I would do, in that case I might break down and get a Bergeon cannon pinion remover... until then... tweezers.

      Thanks a lot! Always used a presto. Will take my must sturdy pair of tweezers out from now on! I saw you used the small Horotec tools for Quartz (turbo etc.). Do you use the Flashtest too? I wonder if I should invest in one. I do only very occasionally Quartz. But like to learn more and discover where the problem is when a Quartz doesn't work (measuring with probes is necessary then I guess?).

    Great job on the quartz watch. Did I hear you correctly that it was a mineral crystal that was used? I prefer sapphire crystal myself, but sounds like they come in certain sizes only. I have a Weishi 1000 Timegrapher for mechanical watches, is there such a thing for quartz?

      Yes, sapphire is limited to 0.5mm increments, sometimes it's very inconvenient! While mineral you can get in 0.1mm increments in all kinds of thicknesses. I keep a ton of mineral crystals in stock so when I have a watch come in I can fit just about anything. So, yeah Horotec has a device called a flash test I have them on my website. It will give you a +/- seconds per month reading. watchoffthecuff.com/products/horotec%C2%AE-flashtest

    Thanks for the feedback, crystal press is something need to get later. I’m afraid of those China press, it possible they could be good. I ordered a loupe for my prescription eye glasses brand “Ary Swiss Made Maxi Loupe”. Curious what brand & magnification do you use?

      I don't know the brand of the loupes I have, I have now had them for so long! I use a #3 Loupe for general work, and a #2 for closer work... Like setting hands. I do have a double lens Loupe but only use it once in a while for super close inspection.... I sense another video coming on.... loupes! Lol
