The Story Dragon
Добавлен 16 ноя 2022
Hey all! I'm here to talk about all things bookish. Which means reviews, book box subscriptions, reading updates, library fun, and more! A friend once told me that a bookworm is somebody who voraciously reads books like they're gobbling them up, and a book dragon hoards beautiful books like they're treasures. I'm technically both ... but DRAGONS!!
And thus, The Story Dragon was born. I'm an upstart right now with all this social media and blogging stuff, but I'm loving it!
Come join my hoard and see what we're collecting!

BOOK REVIEW | The Dark We Know by Wen-Yi Lee | GOTHIC HORROR | 🪦🎨🏚️

✨Content Warnings from Wen-Yi Lee's Website: www.wenyileewrites.com/content-warnings/ This was such a tough review. Lee absolutely excelled in some elements, but fell through on one that toppled part of the plot. It's Midnight Mass vibes, but YA and with Chinese influences. Truly, I did enjoy this, with that little snag of me re-interpreting how the antagonists were meant to function. Overall, ...

BOOK REVIEW | Darker by Four by June CL Tan | URBAN FANTASY |👑🏢⚔️

I read Darker by Four by June CL Tan and this is my review! In the end, this book got 4.25 stars from me. This is YA fantasy done RIGHT! I adored the way Tan wove the main plot and subplots together in a manner that was complex, but never convoluted. The characters are so endearing, especially Nikai and Zizi. I do think there are readers who won't like Rui because of her default towards selfish...

BOOK REVIEW | Sleep Like Death by Kalynn Bayron | RETELLING 🍏🧙🏿♀️🪄

I read Sleep Like Death by Kalynn Bayron and this is my review! In the end, this book got 3.5 stars from me. If I had rated as an adult reader, it would have been a much lower rating, but I'm coming at this from the perspective of a high school freshman, which is the age group I believe this novel will appeal to. I enjoyed the mashup of Grimm fairytales in here! Bayron cherry-picked elements to...

FairyLoot's July Adult exclusive edition had me smiling! I haven't read this novel yet, so I can't speak to how all of the design elements come together thematically. FairyLoot's July Romantasy exclusive edition is SO PRETTY! I don't know why I had a massive wave of nostalgia hit me when I saw the redesigned cover, but it was a bittersweet moment. The character endpapers are lovely, and they really fit the mysterious and secretive nature of our MMC and FMC. Gah, it makes me wish I had liked the story better! FairyLoot Romantasy June 2024 Unboxing
Does it have spice and can a 16yo read this?
For what I consider spice, it contains just a hint. It's also labeled as Adult by the publisher, so per those guidelines, it's not intended for a teen audience. But, you know, it's always up to the individual and the guardian!
@@thestorydragon1 I mean does it have more than kiss and like is it close door?, cuz I don't care for gore or bloodshed but if it's spice I won't be reading it hi. Hehehe
@@Marvasmidk OH, I see! I can confirm it's more than just a kiss, lol. So probably not your cup of tea!
❤ 📚 ❤ 👻 ❤
👻📚🦇💕
I was expecting more from the romance too, I really liked them together but wanted to see them together more before the book ended. I really liked Graves!
The cover on the trade edition for this book looks like middle grade anime to me 😆 your review has me intrigued though! I’m adding this to my TBR, and if I like it, I’ll try to find the Fairyloot edition on mercari or pango
What's kind of bothering me, is that they picked a book that already has stunning editions on the normal market. The US edition has sprayed edges, the UK Edition has stunning endpages. Both have gold foiling on the book itself... Also I prefer the warm, orange colors way more for a mulan retelling :D I think I will sell my copy and get the US Hardback 🫣😅
Am I the only one who likes the warm and cool tones clashing without the dust jacket? 😢
I read Ruthless Vows, Honey Witch, and the Wren in the Holly Library and I agree with everything you said!!! The Letters of Enchantment duology is so incredibly beautiful and everyone should give it a try. The only Red Tower book I’ve genuinely loved is Five Broken Blades…Wren has less plot holes than Fourth Wing at least lol. The God and the Gemini and A Temptation of Magic are definitely now on my TBR 😊
I will forever and always recommend the Letters of Enchantment duology to anyone and everyone! I haven't read Five Broken Blades yet! Although, if you say it's worth a shot I'll TOTALLY add it to my TBR. The cover catches my eye every time it pops up on Goodreads and such, but I've been hesitant ...
@@thestorydragon1 I loved it! It was like oceans eleven but fantasy and a little Korean, and the end goal is to assassinate the king instead of robbing casinos 😆
Hey! I'm excited to see watch this review once i read the book😆 and i wanted to know if this book contains a lot of spice, and if so which kind? Thanks!💞
YAYAYA! Ugh, it was a JOY of a book. The banter was *chef's kiss* There is a slight (and I mean SLIGHT) spice scene. It's such a tiny moment that I honestly forgot how graphic it gets, but not very. Think Emily Henry as opposed to Ali Hazelwood as a "how spicy does it spice" comparison
@@thestorydragon1 oh okay awesome! Thanks so much for letting me know!☺️
Why did they put the characters on the side of the endpapers that would be covered by the dust jacket? :(
I didn't even notice that but you're so right 😭
I actually really like the bright blue with the redesigned cover that Owlcrate did. For me it wasn't too jarring, but I also have to give it to Illumicrate here, because that sprayed edge is gorgeous and I LOVE the hardback design that they did! Super well done. I also tend to hate when they do a recolor of the traditional cover, but here I really like how the new color way looks and the cover is stunning so its hard to dislike. Its like, on premise I dislike it, because I also prefer the exclusivity, but that cover is gorgeous so hard to be too mad this time around 😂
This was a really hard book battle!! I would have LOVED to "build-a-book" and cherry-pick my favorite features from each one. And having read the book now, I totally understand Owlcrate's endpapers. They do fit nicely with the story. But man, I'm a sucker for character artwork!

📚💕🌟
That book is beautiful. I'm currently on the FL waitlist. I hope it's not too long of a wait. 😢
I'm not sure what the wait times look like now. I do know my friend (who got on last summer) had to wait about five months. Fingers crossed you get on soon!
The most recent update I have seen for FL waitlist looks like this UK/international YA box - December 9th YA book only - November 4th Adult book - September 2nd Combo book - December 31st Romantasy - May 12th (2023) US/Canada YA box - November 15th YA book only - September 30th Adult book - June 20th (2023) Combo book - September 30th Romantasy - August 31st So depending on what one/s you are on the waitlist for its a pretty long wait 🥲 This update was from July4th btw
👏 👏 👏 It is so beautiful! Love this book. I think the original cover is the inside of the jacket, and the colors of the naked hardback is the same as the original color way.
Ok, I was soooooo confused looking at the spoiler card, because it said (going off memory here since my dogs got ahold of it and tore it to shreds 💀) "a colour-way redesign of the trade cover" and I was like "huh ... I don't remember it looking like this." And now I wonder if the UK and US had different trade covers, because sure enough, the one I've seen is not the same. It that's the case, I'm glad we got the UK cover on the back because it's BEAUTIFUL!
Both editions are beautiful but i think the winner (in my eyes) is fairyloot. My only critique would be to make the sprayed edges green instead of purple so it could match both sides of the dust jacket.
Oooooooooooh, that's a good thought. And then I could have reversed 😭
@@thestorydragon1 if the editions were the same size you could even swap the covers but since one is slightly smaller that wont work. Bummer.
I agree. I think its such a shame, because I feel like the reversable dust jacket matches the end pages a lot better than the purple one, though that one is also gorgeous.
Oh my gosh, I almost did this with another set 😂
beautiful edition! 😍 since you have read the book, could you (without spoilers) explain two details of the endpapers to me? 1) minor issue with the gorgeous front endpapers: what's the second knob on one of the drawers? is it a lock or something? or shouldn't it be there? 2) back-endpapers. what's up with that door on the right? it's like - there is the same door twice? but the right one is cut in half? I really don't get the artwork here ...
Sure! No spoilers needed 😊 I had to look way closer, lol, but yes I'm pretty sure it's a lock beside the knob. (Not that it would ever be needed because of the wards. MAGIC!) For the back, it's two separate doors. In person, you can see the pillar, but with the way the papers are glued the pillar is on the curve. It could be any number of places. It might be Graves's home? (That's my best guess since we spend a lot of time there.)
@@thestorydragon1 ahh, thank you so much! the lock makes a lot of sense and I did think about the glue doing its part. for me it was like half of a door and I wondered what happened there 😂 can't wait to see mine in person! 🥰 the cover is so nice - dustjacket is my favourite feature and the edges go so well with it 😍 pretty!
Hahahaha, I can totally see the confusion and being like "why is there only half a door ... ??" The edges were so well done 💕 it all just flows together and I love that!
Just got my adult book today and it’s amazing too. Both books are so beautiful! That jacket gave me Once Upon a Broken Heart vibes.
Ahh, I'm so glad to hear the adult book is going to be awesome as well!! It's sooooooooo pretty. I love it!
I prefer the FL edition but I love the OwlCrate endpapers artwork. Does OwlCrate usually have highlighted colored edges on all their books?
I was so excited to see character endpapers on both editions. And having them front and back was a treat! I especially liked that we got Eve's birthday in the Owlcrate edition 💕 They almost always have blocked sprayed edges, but only in the past two editions have they been the shocking, highlighter color. Crossing my fingers that changes in August 🤞
I feel like the FL is a better edition, and it’s a bummer the exclusive content is so similar but I like the FL content more. I have seen other copies of that FL edition and those edge misalignments seem to be on all of them.
Hmmm, well that's a bit disappointing regarding the edges. Not a big deal by any means, but still makes me go 'whomp'
Ooo, those edges are intense … it doesn’t seem as high quality as previous books…
I know! Owlcrate usually has sprayed block edges and they've fit the novels really well. Idk what's up with the June/July choices ...
So, I have embarked on writing patterns to use items from my sub boxes for other things. Like the spoon, it’s not functional for me, so (last time I got one) I added a small cushion into the spoon and glued a quality magnet to the back, and now it’s a pin cushion that sits on my machine for sewing (this 2nd one I might just add the magnets and use it on the fridge). The first cloth basket I got, I added some Velcro to the bottom and now use it in the back of my car, since it Velcro sticks to the carpet, and all the random things like pens/tissues/wipes/change goes in that and it doesn’t slide around in the back because of the Velcro. This time I think I might remove cup the top piece that gives it its shape, install a zipper, and turn it into a travel case. That book is beautiful. That reverse is stellar. I’m reversing mine for sure. Those outline add-ins are the best. For a book I wasn’t too excited for this is a very nice edition.
This is GENIUS! I'm loving the ingenuity 💕You could have a whole channel based solely around reimagining book box items! That would be a blast. Right? It's a beautiful edition. I do think people will be disappointed in the book content (it's the epitome of lower grade YA and more targeted to 15 year old readers) but it's good for the library and does fit the box target audience, so 🤷♀️. I have a friend whose daughter loves reading, so I'll regift to her
I just found you through your FL July Unboxing. And i love your content! I just want to mention: i read the book without Reading book 1 and i followed along really nicely. so you can definitly read them as seperate stand-alones (i also ordered book 1 because i really loved the world building an am exicited to read a second Story in this world) But i sadly i dont think fairyloot is doing a special Edition of book 1 any time soon, because the shadows between us was in a YA box years ago, so Fairyloot all ready as an exclusive edition of book 1. ( it is sad to me, because the covers and height dont really fit and you also cant get your hands on the SE of book 1)
Oh, I'm so glad to know that! Okay, it definitely makes me feel better that book 2 isn't dependent on book 1. It is sad knowing they probably won't do a matching edition of The Shadows Between Us, though. Especially since you said it's hard to get ahold of the first edition, and they don't match anyways. Maybe it will end up being part of their Iron Editions? (Though they don't seem to have done much with those so far?) We'll see, I suppose
I really adore your thoughts on the romantasy subscription because I feel the absolute same! I skipped the Blood-Wolf-Curse-book because I read some snippets and really hated it and I skipped August as well but, just like you, I don't want to cancel just yet in case it's getting better. But I will be using my skips as long as I have them. I hope the subscription develops more in the direction you were expecting (me too), but I don't have the highest hopes since I think this (especially the alpha male thing, not so much the abuse) is what most people picture as romantasy. I'm thinking of Gild, which I absolutely hated due to the way women were treated in it and lots of abuse. I want books similar to the adult sub with a focus on the romance, not ... that.
Oh my gosh, EXACTLY what you said. Similar to the adult subscription, but a romance focus. I didn't even pick up Gild because I knew I wouldn't be able to stomach it. And I sent my friend a link of the TW when she said she might pick it up. She passed lol. July's book (which we haven't gotten yet but I already read) is 100% a step in the right direction. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that this is wobbly legs while getting started and they'll hit their stride!
@@thestorydragon1 glad to hear you prevented your friend from that read! 😌 (though Gild is a beloved book, somehow - I don't get it). Love to hear this about july! If it's the book I'm thinking of, I have seen the review :) that's promising. I hope you are right - adult had a rough start design wise and is now my favourite sub. Maybe we just have to give romantasy the time it needs. plus, the more subscriptions they have, the more books they have to select each month which reduces the ability of getting only "the best" in the boxes (subjectively spoken of course 😂)
She was happy, too 😂 Oh my GOSH, I'm so excited for the July adult book! I've seen it advertised everywhere, and @ayragon said they got theirs FL edition in and it's amazing 💕 I've always wondered how the selection process works. Especially since, out of ALL the books, box subscriptions duplicate quite a bit. I wonder if the publisher is like "pick on of these three" and that's that. But if romantasy heads in the same direction as the adult subscription (growth wise), I'm definitely holding on and crossing my fingers!
@@thestorydragon1 sadly I had to skip july (I'm on combo and wasn't interested in the ya pick - just can't afford it for only one book I'm curious about but hadn't even on my radar before) but if it's pretty and good I might try to hunt it down afterwards 🤭 yes, I'd love to know too! actually, I'd appreciate more insights and behind the scenes. This is all such a huge mystery 👀 fingers crossed for a good romantasy development!
I totally get that. And I'd say you made the right move. The July books was good for teens, but it's certainly a low-level YA that adult subscribers will (probably) be "meh" about. I regifted it to a friend's daughter and she loved it, so it works! Certainly no Crimson Moth, though, lol! Some behind the scenes blogs and videos would be so cool! I would eat that up in a heartbeat! 🤞
Same. I stayed with them for YEARS... but the amount of damaged books and the utter "I don't give a shit" from customer service just sent me over the edge. Quit several months ago, LOVE not giving them $100+ per month for crappy books.
I started to expect damage to the book, and that's NEVER something you want in a subscription. Glad you're saving money! 💕
I appreciate this review. I have two copies of this now (thanks, FL) so will see when I get to it. I am going to try to catchup to my sub boxes by the end of the year since I hit my goal. What does your sweatshirt say?
I'm desperately trying to catch up as well. There are so many, and it's my own fault for having a ton of subscriptions lolol. It's a policy and change sweatshirt!
@@thestorydragon1 agreed. Less speaking hot air and more making change to prevent further tragedies.
100 percent in agreement. After I just got The Ritual and was immediately like, "ugh" at the design. I'm over it and cancelling today. I stopped getting the merch about 3 months ago and switched to book only, and was happy not to have all the garbage around. The jewelry is lame, feels so cheap and not book inspired at all, (e.g. two arrows, or a star supposed to be representing ACOTAR? mmm no). There was one glass tumbler I got recently, but the straw wasn't wrapped and fell on the floor when I was unboxing and immediately shattered. I do not like the paper they use, how all the hardbacks are like "boxy/square/pointy" if that makes sense. I have been sent separate book covers twice now and have no idea why. The design on these is just icky. I have illumicrate, fairyloot, arcane society, and broken binding, and recently bought the pre-order for the OwlCrate romatasy and romance so this one has got to go!
Nooooooo. The glass tumblers were some of the good items. I hate that for you 😭 That's so odd that they sent you separate book covers, too? I think the Owlcrate Romantasy will be a way better sub!
I am probably going to cancel my Illumicrate book only box at the end of the summer. I joined in December ‘23 and didn’t like the book, received Jan and Feb and maybe March, but have skipped every book since then. I haven’t liked the book selections, so that was a big factor, but also I started the FL Romantasy box, and knew I’d only keep one of them. FL Romantasy also has selection hiccups, but I am more of that target audience than Illumicrate, and when the quarterly FL Epic Fantasy sub comes out, I will probably drop to the YA book only and no longer get the bookish items.
I've been disappointed in the Illumicrate book selections as well. The only one I've managed to read thus far is Voyage of the Damned. All of the others I've started and stopped multiple times, and I've had the audios lapse because I just couldn't get into them. Oooooh, I'm super excited for the FL Epic Fantasy sub!! I might drop my Afterlight subscription for that one. And I got the chance to read the FL July Romantasy pick. It wasn't great imo, but by far it's the best pick so far and I think a lot of people will enjoy it. If nothing else, I'm sure it will be pretty! I've been think about dropping the FL items as well in 2025. I just haven't been as impressed in 2024
@@thestorydragon1 exactly. Plus, I have so many of the items repeated already. It’s fine, I can sell and gift a lot of them, but it’s more clutter so I think I’m done. Plus I am 30 years away from the target audience, so the stories aren’t my favorites anymore.
YES. The amount of book sleeves I've gotten 😭 I have a whole drawer filled with items I need to sell or use as giveaways. YA has gotten hit or miss as I get older (which totally makes sense because I'm not a teen LOL). I have to follow a different rule-set when I review for that exact reason--I'm no longer the target audience, I just work with the target audience and purchase for them 😂
❤ 📚 ❤

🌸 ❤ 📚
I also prefer the Illumicrate version. While it's sad that it's just a recolor of the cover, I absolutely *despise* edges with only one color, especially if it's a jarring color. It's also just way too saturated that it doesn't match the cover, even less the illustration on the other side of the dust jacket. The gold foiling and black hardcover also doesn't match so..where's the point in that blue edge? Hate it. Absolutely hate it.
The dragon on the Illumicrate version was a WIN! I'm just so confused by the specific shade of blue that Owlcrate went with. There are so many hues to choose from and they picked Highlighter 😭
@@thestorydragon1one of the darker colors from the covers would have fit much better honestly
@@nellie4621 YES! I completely agree

I think this will be a best read of 2024 for me. It looks so good.
@@ayragon it really outdid my expectations! And I thoroughly enjoyed the audio. Let me know what you think when you get around to reading 💕

The embroidery looks so beautiful I would love that and the water bottle too. I dont care for bookmarks really and the bookends are okay. I really love the look of the book , especially the foiling on the endpapers. Feel like FL box was better than IC this month
I wish so badly that I could embroider! I'm going to make a second attempt, so we'll see! The FairyLoot box definitely seemed to be thought through better than the Illumicrate box. It was more cohesive, and the items were well designed. I especially love the way the book was done!
I received my package two days ago. I wish they would add some pink color to the hardcover, similar to the color on the edges. The pencils are my favorite part of the set.
That would have really tied the whole design together. It makes me wonder if the different artists communicate with one another, or if they're just given basic blueprints of what Illumicrate wants for the edition and roll with that ...
That cover reminds me of When The Moon Hatched in that color way…
I had to go refresh my mind on that cover, but yeah, they really are similar with the color scheme! The blue variants with the silver has such a beautiful effect
The box looks amazing but I'm so confused that they put the 2nd volume of book series from 2020 in a montly box instead of selling it at their online shop separately. I know from Illumicrate that they sell the other books of a series separately and the people who brought the first volume get an early access.
I didn't even think about that as an option, but they definitely could have gone that route. Or they could have done a combo sale with their Iron Editions that got launched a while back. (Although, I don't think they've done much with that?) This was an interesting book choice for certain.
I am so sad to figure out that they did infact do a special edition back in 2020 of The shadows between us. Hoping that they will do a reprint of it.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Ugh, I hope they do. Or, at the very least, that this can read as a standalone and there's no need to get the first book. (Unless you really want it, of course!)
Yes! That box is 💯! Thank you for the review. My box arrives this week so I am stoked now! A bookend hack, turn it to face out and then you can see the design AND you can put a book there facing out because the stand is so long.
Ooooh, I'll have to give this trick a try! Now to find the best book to fit the colors of the bookends ...
Those edges look like Emily Wilde’s… that book is a dark fantasy romance. The end of the first book was ANGST and left me near tears. The second book goes more HEA but romantasy = smut to me. I skipped the 2nd book, because it was awful, but it’s good to know how the others are stacking up…
Okay, so I'm not crazy. The edges DO look similar to another edition! I was second guessing myself. I probably should have skipped the second book too (sad days). But I'm 16% into July's book and enjoying it so far! Let's cross our fingers and hope things are looking up ...
I really liked your unboxing :). My personal favourite is the bookends.
Thank you!! The design on the bookends is really well done :) I'm playing around with display options!
