While we approach our subjects as Christians, we do so in a way that's accessible and welcoming to all faith backgrounds.
164: Substantive Cinema | The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou feat. Dan McCoy
Twenty years ago on Christmas Day, Wes Anderson released his fourth feature film into the world. The star-studded Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou was not as an immediate hit as some of Anderson's other films but it's one that has aged incredibly well. Bill Murray leads a cast of phenomenal actors such as Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, and many others as the titular Steve Zissou on a quest for both revenge against the rare (and possibly fictional) shark that killed his partner and best friend, and his long lost dignity and relevance as an oceanographer and documentarian. As funny as it is, the movie also is about a man struggling against his morta...

Four weeks in a row, can you believe it?! This week we are back with a Substantive Cinema pick that we've been excited for for quite some time, Walter Hill's underrated masterpiece Southern Comfort (letterboxd.com/film/southern-comfort). The movie follows a squad of National Guardsmen doing exercises in the Louisiana swamps. After some painfully avoidable events, the men become hunted and are o...

160: Substantive Cinema | Shock Corridor feat. Mike White & Spencer Parsons
Просмотров 166Месяц назад
Once again, we recorded this episode a while back (a number of months ago, in this case) but due to the lamentable state of many things in the US, our episode this week feels eerily timely. For our first Noirvember Substantive Cinema epsiode of 2024, we are looking at one of Samuel Fuller's most celebrated and highly regarded films, Shock Corridor (letterboxd.com/film/shock-corridor). In the mo...

We talk music, faith creativity,...

Happy Father's Day! We will hopefully be back on track with our replay schedule here as we build up to our relaunch! Tyler Huckabee is someone who's work and perspective I've appreciated for a long time and it was a real joy to sit down and talk about movies and the work of David Lynch with him. We cover our mutual, less than virtuous, introduction to his work in Mulholland Drive, finding human...

No, it's not just you! In my own deconstruction journey (and I love the way Stephanie so gently and succinctly brushed aside the stigma so many Christians place upon the idea of deconstruction) I have developed such a sensitivity and true passion for the art of story telling - especially in film, and even more specifically in the oft maligned genre of "horror" (my personal "love language" since chilhood!) - and how the arts can, through the engagement of imagination, open up our minds and hearts to deeper truths about our shared humanity, even our understanding of God. I've loved both Cat People and The Curse of the Cat People for years, and was just searching YT for reviews and commentaries, specifically on the sequel. I was only a third of the way through this podcast when I liked and subscribed! Your shared passion for the film and so many of your insights resonated and added to my own understanding and appreciation for the this remarkable, tragically under-seen film. I will definitely be going back to enjoy your discussion of Cat People now, and exploring your previous posts as well. I'm all for reviving the tradition of telling ghost stories during Winter and the Christmas season, and this film in particular is a wonderful story to add to that tradition.
Legit thought this was about the new movie "the substance" 🤦🏻♀️
Haha, not this one but we cover movies often and may talk about it on a future Substantive Cinema episode!
Thank you, Imprint! Excited to watch these!
This was such a blast!
So grateful for the nodies behind the bus. Thanks for sharing this.😅
So glad I finally discovered the world of Val Lewton! Shoutout to Josh Larsen from Filmspotting and check out his book Fear Not!

Was you on the lead attorney channel with av ...? Is this the very same Vincent?
Could be. One of our previous cohosts, Vincent, was a fan of TLA. Which video?
Cat People is one of my absolute favorite films; and with Halloween coming close, it's the perfect time to cover it. Great podcast interview! Dropped you a like!

I’m loving the conversational banter. I have Reading While Black in my library; have not opened it yet. It was recommended by a friend.
