Picking Every Conference USA Bowl Game Winner
I miss the days of Clemson and Nebraska steamrolling everyone with the triple option.
Football is the best sport because of all the team dynamics that vary so much. I love seeing different stuff. What’s boring is watching everyone do RPO or air raid vs air raid. How about wing T vs flex bone or, malzhans offense vs the go go offense. Chip Kelly vs west coast. I miss that GT team. CFB was special back then. Gods will for your life is more special. Follow it

This exact situation happened again 2 years later in the Big 12 South albeit with less national perspective. Oklahoma St, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M all finished in a rock-paper-scissors tie breaker
Army still uses it?
Army and Navy are both 5-0 while watching this 😢long live the triple option
Die hard husker fan here all I can say is Nebraska. I'm sure not a lot of people remember this but in 2001 a triple option team played for the national title they got destroyed but that was because that was the 2001 Miami hurricanes.
The triple option and the air raid are by far my two favorite systems and they could not be more different. Yet they are both hella entertaining and effective as a knife through butter when used properly. Gotta love the hardcore offensive schemes
It's kind of amazing to think that the 90's saw the highs of the great air raid offenses of Mike Leach at Valdosta State and the Flexbone under Paul Johnson at Georgia Southern only 170 miles from each other.
@@johnard611 dang, that's an interesting piece of information I never considered! Any idea if one of those systems influenced the other at all?!
Great video. Forgot to mention the ridiculous size of Tech’s O-line, averaging 6’6” snd 334 pounds.
My first college football game I remember watching was Navy in 2008 at 15 years old I remember seeing this strange offense and being intrigued. So much I purchased NCAA 09 and updated the team and followed them the whole year. This was back when you had antenna and CBS sports was your main option for Saturday football. So I was able to see a lot of their game. I got sucked into the NFL for a LONG time until about 2019, but by then, Networks owned the rights and trying to watch the midshipmen has been difficult.
I'm a diehard Alabama fan It is really fun watching the triple option. My dad said it was a great equalizer and exposed lack of defensive discipline.
Coach Ken was no slouch, either!
I’m a longtime high school coach blessed to succeed and I love the triple! Multiple championships with it in our section in California…
1)Not to belittle in any way the talent of Oklahoma's team, but Stoops definitely held an advantage, not only knowing Leach's offense by heart, but also his psychology. He knew what Leach would likely do in any given scenario and took obvious advantage of it. Thus, Tech's offense was not given the chance to make up for the deficiencies in it's defense. Not to say Tech would have beaten an Oklahoma Team playing it's best football, but the game would have at least been more entertaining if that had not been the case. 2) How quickly the Pac 12 fell, since the possibility wasn't even concidered in this video.
Like others said, this was a crazy season since you had four teams in one division in the top 10 as well as three of the top four Heisman finalists. The Big 12 South was wild. One thing of note, Mike Leach took Texas down in 2002 before he did so in 2008.
Love this! Thank you for sharing. I really loved watching these teams!
My memory of the option was that for the option to be successful, you had to throw it 12-15 times per game. This kept the defense from lining up with 8-9 in the box and single covering any wide receivers. Johnson seemed to throw it less and less. You want to take advantage of the single covering of the wide receivers and throw it deep a few times against that single coverage. That’s the one thing I wish Johnson had done, thrown it a few more times. I always thought Johnson was a great coach. I hate that he got pushed out. I would have kept him around. Geoff Collins was a complete disaster.
Agree with you 100%. A crucial part of Georgia Southern's recipe for success with the Flexbone was recruiting a great running QB and letting him start as a freshman or sophomore so that he could have time to develop into a good passer who could keep opposing defenses honest and stage comebacks in the last quarter of the game when needed.
It was nice to believe that we actually had, “A Shot”, with anyone we played. With him, we did.
The way football is changing ( going soft) deeply saddens me . These offenses are going to go away. I hate it.
No. The game evolves. The troller option/wishbone spread across football in the 60’s(?) and 70’s because it allowed squads like Oklahoma to get their superior athletes the ball in space. The game was played on the periphery of the field for the most part. Further, a great deal of blocking in a lot of schemes is cut blocking which is far easier than squaring a defender up. The flexbone became popular because it allowed for more misdirection via motions, fakes, and counters. This offense was never meant to be smashmouth - it was meant to effectively distribute the ball to playmakers to run in space. Lastly, option football is still very prevalent in college just not on every play from under center. Out of all the college football I’ve watched (and played, by the by), the triple option is easily the scheme most aesthetically appealing to me. But pretending players today have less mettle because every team doesn’t employ a series of fakes, counters, pitches, and edge runs from under center (because all of these things still happen just not like Oklahoma was doing in the 70’s) is pre-lapsarian nonsense.
as a GT alum it was always fun to watch cuz we were different. now they try to emulate everyone else, but just suck. johnson was smart, he knew he had an edge running the triple option because he lacked recruiting. whats crazy though is that good recievers came out at a time when GT ran the triple option (Thomas). no idea why they decided to go to a team that ran that lol
As a student of the game, the triple option is a great way to win football games with players who might never be recruited to play at the next level.
I ❤ watching triple-option football...it's a different, entertaining type of offense. You mention Georgia Tech, and folks have mentioned Nebraska in the 90s but there was a third Power 5 school that was known for the triple-option in the 90s...Syracuse. They had some pretty good teams, winning the Big East a couple of times with it. Donovan McNabb came out of that system and had a solid NFL career. The Orange blew up some pretty good teams with the triple-option, Miami being one of them. Once Syracuse moved away from the triple-option, they have generally not been as good since.
I loved watching my Dawgs win 2 of those rings ❤️🖤🐶
I'm excited for the 12 team playoff. I think it's inevitable we get some bad games. Sometimes there's a huge gap from the top 5 teams to the rest of the teams. But best case scenario the gap will shrink as every good player isn't trying to get on the same team bc you don't need to play for the usual top schools to be viable for a championship. So we could see even more parity (I think that's the word) then we have the last couple seasons. Another best case scenario is that the 12 team format brings in tons more money and eyes to college football. There are lots of college football fanbases who have teams that are good but not great. Iowa comes to mind. Those fans never really think they have a chance to just compete for a title. But with the new format they don't have to be undefeated they just have to have really solid seasons to get a chance. I think those type of fanbases are going to really support if their teams end up in the playoffs. Im most looking fwd to schools who would have never had a chance actually making the playoff and then making deep runs. They'll be highly entertaining to watch. Like the year tcu had. Conference title games are gonna be played like true championship games. I honestly can't wait. I think this is something college football needed 20 years ago. But it's finally here and I can't wait to see the blowouts and upsets and absolute craziness from the fans.
I never understood why the triple option couldn't integrate a run-pass option as well.
You're right; it should, and it can. Unfortunately, many coaches don't understand the concept.
The best Flexbone Georgia Southern teams had QBs that had been groomed over several seasons as starters to be very effective passers when needed. We threw enough to keep defenses honest and could air it out downfield when comebacks were called for.
Nice video! Can’t wait for part 2
Part 2 just dropped! Thanks for watching
another banger. thanks fam.
Thank you! Part 2 just dropped!
Good content good video great narration. You got a voice for narration. Please do a coaching series you have the groundwork with Paul Johnson: start with the Bowdens and then Saban and other coaching trees like shottenheiners Shanahans and so on that would be money and probably grow the channel. This channel should blow up with the work that’s put in and quality content. Pay a few dollars to a pr firm and release some shorts on that new series and you can quit your day job !
Thanks so much! I plan on diving into more of those career retrospectives for coaches this off-season. I appreciate the encouragement!
You’ve got some good stuff keep it up
Thanks so much, I appreciate that!
Man, I’m glad we have the CFP, but I wish we kept the BCS trophy
100%. That trophy ruled.
@@newage-sports glad you agree
Penn state shoulda made it, by the end of the szn they were a powerhouse beatinf Michigan, Ohio state, and stomping Wisconsin for the B10 championship.
Yeah, that’s one that stands out to me as the committee blowing it. Part 2 just dropped, check it out!
IDK I think it would be nice if all Conference Champions made the playoffs or maybe have the teams in the Top 25 go at it....?
My pitch is all 5 power 5 champs, 3 G5 champs, and 4 at-large selections.
Have to remember too that Auburn handed both Alabama and Georgia their only losses if the year. Then undefeated UCF beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl
1. In bowl games players don't care as much 2. players where missing (more on Auburn than UCF 3. Alabama and Georgia are both rivals of Alabama (especially Alabama) 4. shit happens, teams lose sometimes I still think the 12 team playoff is better, I'm just saying your reasoning is flawed.
@@Disappointman-pl6gs UCF also went undefeated in 2018 as well until losing by 8 points in the Fiesta Bowl to the Joe Burrow led LSU tigers. So the team was a lot better than people thought for 2 seasons. And I understand shit happens. Otherwise the Giants and the Brady led Bucs wouldn’t have won the Super Bowl while having some of the worst reactors on the playoff teams.
@@Disappointman-pl6gs And yet all of the reasons you just gave are why FSU believe they were snubbed and their bowl loss didnt matter in 2023.
@@MattBuild4 63-3.
D1 College football has been the antithesis of sports for generations. In no other sport can you get red hot for 9 or 10 games straight and not have a chance because of an early loss, much less go completely undefeated and not even have a chance to play for a title
It seems so simple, but fans have been saying this for 50+ years
I went to that orange bowl game. I'm an Iowa fan. Norm Parker's defense was amazing
Yeah, that was a great defensive game. Probably one of the best game plans I’ve seen against the option.
I’m a retired teacher/coach. I have to tell you that you have really put great effort into these videos. Keep up the good work. 14:12
Thank you so much! Just put a new video up!
I actually played keyboard for "Paul Johnson and the Yellow Jackets"
This is a retarded hot take because the RPO is the triple option reinvented.
Great coach! Triple option ain’t dead, it’ll come around again. It’s weakness is winning from behind.
I agree completely. I just put up a new video!
Harding University, playing in the D2 National Championship, runs this offense. They recruited my son to be QB, but he didn't want to only run the ball. He ended up excelling as a dual threat QB at the D3 level and never regretted it.
That’s great to hear! College football at any level is special, congrats to him. I just put up a new video, check it out!
@@newage-sports I will. He had to retire due to being diagnosed with cancer. His name is Trentin Dupper. If you google him you’ll learn a lot about him. Went from top ten dual threat QB in the nation at D3, with a personal tryout awaiting him with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to losing 50 pounds and all his hair while undergoing chemo and radiation. More to life than sports. Tough when it runs up on you and smacks you in the mouth.
Never forget Tech taking a Dump on Mississippi state in the Orange bowl. I was there and the State fans really thought they’re were going to steam roll them.
One of my favorite games ever! I just put up a new video, check it out.
Hi! Mizzou fan here. Review of the review time. We saw the same questions at QB and HC preseason. Glad we could all be wrong.
Yeah, that was an awesome season for the Tigers! I just put up a new video, check it out!
That flex bone is a beast offense
I enjoyed it. Just put up a new video, check it out!
As a Virginia tech fan that watched a LOT of VT vs GT Thursday night games. Bud Foster could never figure out the triple option. He had to know it was coming. But every meeting GT would score 2 td’s off of the defense over committing to taking out the qb. And just a quick toss to the half back. And boom 75 yard TD.
Yeah, it’s tricky. Not everyone could figure it out. Some guys did one year and couldn’t the next! Just put up a new video, check it out!
Not going to lie I was happy when he retired. Nobody wanted to play the triple option.
Yep, that’s what made it so fun! GT always had a chance. Just put up a new video, check it out!
The downside to the triple option is trying to make it into the NFL.
Yeah, I don’t think you’ll ever be able to pay a QB to run the option. Just put up a new video, check it out!
That 2014 match between Georgia Tech and at that time, first year FBS program Georgia Southern was legendary. 42-38 final.
Yeah that was a really fun game. It’s too bad southern transitioned away from the option too! Just put up a new video, check it out!
I'm a Husker fan and the absolute worst team we had between 1970 and 2001 would slaughter the best teams we had from 2017-23 I wish Johnson was our coach
That would have been an interesting hire. I think Nebraska can win 8 or 9 next year though. Just put up a new video, check it out!
Just came here to say fuck this offense it’s a nightmare to defend and watching it was worse.
Yeah, definitely not for everyone! Just put up a new video, check it out!
This video doesn't have much to do with the triple option.
Nope, just the story of the last major program to build their offense around the triple option. Just put up a new video, check it out!
@@newage-sports Where's the link, I'll check it out, but I listened to a 6-part series about the Wishbone and it was vastly superior.
