Buying a Boat or camper van Things to Consider Helpful Information
Practical Information on Real-World Considerations Before Buying a Boat
Today, I'm sharing practical boat ownership tips to help you make an informed decision before buying a boat. We’re not diving into technical specs like sail data or types of keels, but focusing on what really matters: you as an individual. Did you know that 90% of boats never move? There are real-world reasons for this, and it's often due to factors like work, time, family, and commitments. Weather, projects, and maintenance are other key considerations as well.
For this video, I’ve combined my own experience, insights from interviews with other boat owners, and valuable online research. You’ll see comments appear like ...

    Solar arch & lithium sounds like a smart plan, be really interesting to see how "off-grid" you can get with it considering the weather here.

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK 2 дня назад

      Yeah absolutely. Apparently the bifacials are pretty good as they absorbed from both sides so the whiteness from the hull/deck and the reflection from water will hopefully give it a bit of a boost. with lithium you can also discharge them more and they apparently recharge quicker. I have lots to research and do, I am also probably going to get a mobile power bank like a bluetti and throw some solar with that too. Mainly for a mix 1. 1. for my folks house for their TV as they had their heating allowance taken away. so when im in hotels like this evening they can just use it. 2. When I go car camping 3. For the boat, I can drag it to the near by coffee shop and quick charge it for use for my gaming lap top. I do have some solar 3x 170w and 4x 105ah batteries but it's really not enough for me. You can see my set up on "gaming offgrid" video. Thanks for watching, I hope it answered some questions, as always thank you if you liked the video and let me know what you want to see.

    So I am curious about the flow rate of the fuel pump you are using. I believe the fuel filter system you are using is rated for 227LPM. It looked like your output was quite a bit more than that. Is this correct?

      The link in the description is not the one I used here in the video and I do mention that I don't recommend that one, however I have the pump which is in the description which I used on another project which flows much better.

      Your welcome, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. You may also want to change your airfilter and clean the MAF sensor it's easy enough to do. very affordable a regular filter will cost around £10-£20 and a cleaner sprey around £5-£10. I did do a recent video on it actually. I also put in some liqui molly pro diesel cleaner. I seem to get 4mpg more now.

      After buying the service kit installing it and using it for another year. I ended up swapping it out for a newer more efficient Chinese heater, which was the same price as a new glowplug from webasto. I have no regrets it works just fine and lots of people have switched over. If you do the same when you first start them up they do smoke, this is the packaging oil burning off. my webasto went in the bin.

    • @serenitycoastUK

      I didn't know that, luckily there is a not too much regulation with boats and it would be tricky to have the toilet/head 20ft away on my 40ft boat. I'm forever cleaning and the toilet is basically a wet room where I shower so each day it's getting cleaned.

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK 5 дней назад

      I originally seen the boat for £60k on a website called boatshed. It then went to £50k where I went to see it, the broker let me know the guy needed to sell it. So for me it was a good buying opportunity. I'm probably going to make another video on what I'd look for if I was to buy a different boat and what I would do differently.

    That dinghy actually cleaned up quite well, im surprised! Looking forward to more sailing content, do you have plans to sail further afield at some point? perhaps down to the med one day?

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK 4 дня назад

      Yes, eventually. I did a video recently explaining my situation and how I had rescued someone from a car wreck the year before buying the boat, then the year after falling through the support gaps and a whole bunch more. But over all, I want to leave the UK, I'm looking at places to ultimately retire to then sail there. Something like Cyprus. The UK is a cold damp place, and living standards are really slipping, especially if you're on a low income like myself.

      No problem, maintenance is different for everyone, for example, my friends who have just left the marina. When they brought their boat, it was all working, and the next thing you knew, they had to replace the fuel tank and recondition both engines. Turns out the previous owner had painted the fuel tank inside and the paint had messed up the engines! so that delayed them moving.

But the starter motors for example wai I think it was. I remember one of them seeming like excellent quality but the teeth where not correct. Which ended up having a loud grinding noise when starting. This could of damaged the car.

If you can wangle a trade card from halfords you cant fall off plus you have the physical return and warranty aspect. I'm working on a video at the moment about real-world things to think about before buying a boat / RV. I love my boat 100%. I got it because I needed a place to go and couldn't get a mortgage. A few months ago I had been informed and had a lot of messages from the marina stating I'm spending too much time on the boat. Their rules are 31 nights a year and no more than 7 in a row. But that's from new managers who come and go, some people have power trips when they're put in charge. As a result, I've had to head back to my folks. But I work in events which involves lots of travelling and staying in hotels. So although my intention isn't to live full time on the boat and I don't. Sometimes you can get pestered. My advice would be not just look for a marina which operates a don't kiss don't tell policy. But ones which let you stay on for long periods of time. I'd also look for a boat which has had things like cockpit enclosures and solar arches. They're hard to do and expensive. I would also recommend going on some sailing courses maybe spending 2 weeks on a boat in fall/ early winter. summer is amazing on the boat, good weather, great friends, beers are flowing and the parties are none stop. I love it but that's only 1 of 4 seasons. Perhaps look to downsize, rent out out that place and buy a boat. That's what a few of my friends have done. I've done a more recent video where I tall about my health, accident and finance stuff. feel free to ask any questions :-)

      @@serenitycoastUKThanks very much for the feedback. When and if you live on the hook, what are the implications to that? I take it it will be rougher but then there are fewer costs. Our plan is to sail around the Scottish islands for about 9 months and then to head towards the Med. As far as renting out our property goes, that is not an option as I feel the problems that it brings are huge. Thanks once again. Not very often sailors are so informative

    Hi, What about the underbody screens? They are real pain - but we need to know how to remove! (Ramps, remove both panels, cut-off plastic bottle for oil filter drainage), fuel filter drainage/recharge! New sump plug....Altogether a bit messy and missing on detail! (Full service can be completed manufactured spec fo less that £70.

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK 15 дней назад

      My car did not have the skid pannel, lower engine cover/underbody screen on it, so I did not have to remove it. If you can get a full service for £70 then I would say go for it, but I did do a comparison with the highstreet cost with halfords and kwikfit and click mechanic, which you can check out their websites.

    One thing to add regarding the pollen filter - If you're fitting an aftermarket part ie bosch etc the arrow should be pointing down. The confusion comes as the original part has the arrow facing up but isn't talking about airflow. The air flows down, so the arrows on aftermarket filters should be facing down.

      Typically, anytime I disconnect any sensors, I disconnect the negative terminal. Majority of people wouldn't bother. I'm just a little extra cautious about shorts. When you do disconnect the battery if you choose to. Then tou will have a code when you reconnect and restart the car. Just undo the windows all the way down, all the way back up and your good. :-) Taking things apart and putting back is fairly straight forward. Took a little while to clean it, simular to a bbq.

      I actually did a video on how much I've spent and covering the mooring cost, but pretty much I'm 12m, and it's around £190 for me over 10 months and membership is about £350ish. I did a bit of a comparison with other marinas Here is about £1k cheaper than up the river and half the price as the penarth one.

    Just out of interest could this be done without any ramps/jacks? Specifically draining the old coolant? Maybe by using a hose or something?

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK Месяц назад

      Yes it can be done in the floor. You can reach the drain hose fairly easy by hand.

      @@serenitycoastUK Oh yes! I bought my first boat this year Hunter 23 to see how I got on. I paid for a survey and it was absolutely useless! Everyone I contacted said it would be 6 weeks until they could look at it. That was my first insight into the marine industry! Luckily we met someone down the marina who recommended a guy who has been amazing. Spent about £4,000 on all the bits that got missed by the survey. However, 24 ft is just a bit too small so I want to upgrade to a 32ft + next season. Prices are still pretty high tho compared to what you paid.

    Hi, I have followed your video step by step, but now I have an engine coolant leak which I think is coming from the egr valve. Any advice?

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK Месяц назад

      Firstly, thank you for liking the video and taking the time to comment and welcome if you're a new subscriber. I would clean up the area and try and trace the leak. It may be a simple case that you knocked one of the pipes from the coolant tank. Maybe you could have had a minor leak previously, and you've noticed it as you've been looking around. I understand a common problem for the insignias is the header tank sometimes starts to leak on the joint where it's moulded. I ended up replacing mine (there is a video) I had done a coolant flush and sometimes it's the gunk that clogs the leaks. Perhaps you could try rad weld it's about £7 a bottle. amzn.to/4fLrNzr You pretty much poor it in leave the car running with the AC on hot and full then leave it to cool down then top up any missing coolant. There is a short on my page on how to use it.

    Just come across your channel via an insignia face book page in a member of, I like the videos you've done , done the egr and throttle body before but not the brakes, mine is the 2015 sports tourer , do you know if this brake change is the same ? I've done timing and drive belts, water pump , lowered suspension and so on, so I'm OK with the spanners lol just wondering if my brakes would be the same process, cheers

      @serenitycoastUK Месяц назад

      Firstly, thank you for liking the video and taking the time to comment and welcome if your a new subscriber. Seems like your a handy person so if your going to attempt the break change then good luck. I found it pretty straightforward I was documenting my first time. If you have break sensors on then it looks like you just pull the wire off the pads and replace. Typically when I remove sensors I disconnect the negative battery, before unplugging sensors. I then clean the ports using contact cleaner like the wd40 electrical sprey. amzn.to/3yLEw4m For reference my car tyres are 17" and I needed the 16" disc/pads. They are sold in pairs everything with the exception of front disc. I'd recommend going to a store like Gsf or eurocar parts. I've brought stuff on ebay previously and it's been totally wrong like start motors or badges.

    What are the advantages of using the K&N filter Vs using a Bosch/Mann filter?

    • @serenitycoastUK
      @serenitycoastUK Месяц назад

      I've used K&N filters on most of my cars, They are reusable and pretty much last forever as long as you clean them and reoil them, one of my latest videos is me cleaning it. They are marketed as "K&N filters offer exceptional airflow to your engine - and more airflow often translates to more efficient fuel burn" / "Performance is built into the DNA at K&N. Every product is built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. Both High-Flow™ and DryFlow® Air Filters allow for improved airflow to allow your engine to breathe easier to help make more power." I'd love to see a full video that went from a cup-of-tea to sailing, demonstrating how you single-handedly deploy the sails, then sail to a destination, then pack the sails back up and moor! That would be fascinating!

      I'm back on the boat at the moment so will be doing a few more boaty things. Another type of Vlog style as mentioned but also highlighting the joys of just boat ownership, lots of people when they're looking into boats focus on the sailing and sea worthiness of the boats. But for most of the time people enjoy their boats in the marinas, the communities, the parties the areas and the tinkering/projects. Which is a big part of it. I'm based in the UK in the Bristol channel with 2nd largest tidal range in the world so really need to be spot on with favorable weather conditions. The video will show a few bits and bobs that I need to do. The rigging wasn't done correctly when I paid for the local professional. So that will be on.

    Bravo! I came from having watched your number one video, and I'd like to encourage you to keep us up to date as to how much you make on these videos. The reason for this is that there must be a notional cross-over point where income from videos makes full-time boating possible, so in one way this is a channel that is all about how to make content creation fund boating (and etcetera!). Naturally, numbers will go up and down but I'd think that the threshold must be somewhere between 30 and 50 thousand subscribers. I'd be interested in all the subsystems-for example, the day I see that you have wired Starlink Satelite Internet into your setup, I'll be overjoyed! Best wishes!

      Eventually i want to seasonal cruise using the boat to sail around in for several months of the year. Then also pick up a camper van to cover the less weather favorable months and use it as a home base for work in the UK. I do like working in events but recently jobs have been cancelled, I was also in an accident before the boat with the prognosis as im a young guy a few months ill be fine. But that wasn't the case the during lock down which was the following year I fell between the support gaps. Only one company helped which was based on the year before, however I only worked 1 day for the agency so it was £10 a month. So ill be telling my story of my original plan on how I wanted to pay the boat off within 2 years, using it as a pop up afternoon tea and air bnb a few times each month to cover marina fees. Then work at festivals and events, then cast off and keep flying back to the UK to work and back to the boat........ However it's been a bit of a rollercoaster so all shell be reveled. Thanks for leaving a comment I do try and get back to everyone. I do a lot of documenting my car fixing projects mainly to save money but to help others.

    Personally I would NOT buy the cheapest expansion tank you can find! I bought one on Amazon for £35 and the plastic welding around the top started to leak after 5 months! I replaced it with one from Euro Parts for £45. Also I didn’t have to remove the whole battery just the battery cover!
