Klay Thompson | Grantland at NBA All Star
Dr. J was one of the best NBA players of all time. Do life his mistakes, learn from them and grow from them. Forgiving himself of his past wrongs, but to be a Man and stand up and be a Man's, Man.. My first love of basketball is with Dr. J. He was the NBA and its entertainment value. He is the reason most black players wanted to dream and be like Dr. J. Give him his flowers now.
It’s so fun to think about someone from the future being included in this conversation. If someone were to tell them “a 3 time MVP and top-20 player of all time is included in this draft try to guess who it is,” it would be so fun to see how long it took them to get to Jokic and then the shock on their face when they hear it’s him.
ESPN hasn’t been the same since they let go of Bill Simmons
Great interview. Bill’s are always great because he knows the game of BBall better than any journalist ever has. And this is the way great players are supposed to talk about their teammates. I’ll never understand what Scotties prob is with MJ and his great Bulls team.
If it were me, I’d trade down and take Nikola Jokic.
It’s cool to be able to relive a piece of this time in history with this audio
Bill Simmons is great. I'm a die hard Celtic. Got a Reggie jersey. Rick Fox was an amazing player. Went to a basketball camp with him. He talked to me like I was his friend.
“if you lose to this crappy giants team twice you don’t deserve to make the playoffs” famous last words billy boy
come for guess the lines, stay for bill and sal foreshadowing the packers loss
Man people really thought Spo wasn’t a good coach
He's good people. The new people are nosy. I was told to mind my own business.
54:00 - NBA Imperialism 54:29 - R*tard
53:20 - The rootless cosmopolitan chimes in. Saying something about the particular character of one place doesn't come at the expense of somewhere else. The Lebron and Springsteen slander is stupid, how is the championing of your hometown and its working people just pandering and parochialism? 55:00 - No, even ten years later, your average fan watches the game with their phone in there hand. When games aren't on they might listen to some podcast or watch clips that have a surface level analysis accompanied by an incessant debate. Just because this largely worthless college educated old media class is constantly pumping out "smart "content with the "right" narratives and ideas doesn't mean it sticks with the average fan or even really gets consumed by them. Most people think like peasants, not necessarily bad thing, and Lebron coming back was like a feast day or a debt Jubilee in the cleave area. You can think that's wrong but that's speaks volumes about the state of American civilization, not Lebron. I really don't like Chuck Klosterman and I'm just basing that off all the episodes of the BS Report/BSP he's on. He is such an embodiment of the products of the old media ecology and he holds the logic and sensibilities of our ruling class and its associative institutions in this advanced stage of decay of liberal (small-L) society. I know its weird to post this on a 10 year podcast compilation in a comment section almost no one is going to see going forward, especially the people featured in said podcast, but I just had to get a little piece of my feelings out from binge relistening to the old episodes. I'm actually making a Best of The B.S. Report, that's why I'm relistening to these if you're curious. I know I'm a crazy person, but I'm right.
14:40 - Well 10 years has passed and Basketball still isn't even in the top 5 most popular sport in the world. I guess it depends on what you consider the "World" but it's not even the second most popular sport in the English-speaking world. Bad job by you Billy!
6:35 "Mt. Yankmore" is crazy
Trading the dude that was single handedly responsible for beating the spurs dynasty while coming off the BENCH is still to this day one of the worst decisions made by one of the best GM’s of our time.
Crazy to come back and listen to these things 10 years later
11:00 The Lakers won't have a problem beating the Mavericks
48:47 - Who knows what paul pierce will say when he has gray hair (or grey goose)
45:20 - 45:50 good god
I never saw the hype in MKG. Was a super athlete, but more of a super athlete in the way of guys like Tony Allen where he wasn’t smooth enough in terms of all of his fundamentals to be anything more than a spark plug guy off of the bench, or someone who could play in transition but would never be able to play in the half court. But who knows.. player development is a huge thing. What if MKG had been playing for the Spurs instead of the Bobcats?
Bill is the best!
2024 Champions. What a trade
The disrespect of Dave Chappelle by Bill is quite grating. I know a lot of people in media portrayed Dave as a crazy guy at this time but jeez, I'd think he'd have a better take on that. How dare a multi millionaire comedian want out of a potentially shackling 50 million dollar contract to focus on what matters most to him, his family and his freedom? Especially upon my relisten to these old episodes, Bill Simmons is wrong all the time but damn that Chappelle conversation was really annoying. Jeff Ross was great though.
Watching this knowing Bron was able to fix his issues with clutch time is incredible answered all these questions and then some
2009 this HAS to be it for the spurs 😅
chuck klosterman sucks so much
They use the term " walking bucket" very loosely today. Iceman was a real "walking bucket" on the basketball court. This man could score blindfolded. One of the best pure scorers in NBA history with efficiency too.
15:00 great call about Iggy.
Great interview and refreshing to listen to someone so great with this level of humility. I feel blessed to have seen him from 1972 up to the merger. To hear ice talk about his backcourt partner James Silas and how great he was, and then to hear him give sweet Bobby Dandrige his flowers. Great stuff with a lot of great memories.
Terry Furlow was a Cav for a while.
Wesley does not fully recognize how great PSH was. He compliments him quite a bit, but keeps compring him to lesser actors
THE ABSOLUTE APEX OF GRANTLAND'S ERA --- FOREVER RIP - ESPN IS EVIL FOR SHUTTERING THIS SITE IN 2015.
The Iceman one of the best to ever score, Mans was a walking bucket in his day forreal forreal
You are a GOAT if you win MVP as a rookie to me... *Wilt Chamberlain in 1960 and Wes Unseld in 1969 won both the rookie of the year and MVP in their first year.* *`NBA GOAT`* considering all stats 1. Wilt 2. Kareem 3. Wes 4 Russell 5. Dr J 6. Iceman 7 MJ 8 Bird 9. Magic 10 Kobe 11 Bron 12 I.Thomas 13 AI 14 Pippen 15 S. Curry
miss him everyday
moses had game in 79" with 33 points and 37 rebounds😀
what a cool dud
i like whan he said "3pt shot is worst shot in bball"😀
I hope I'm this cool when I'm his age.
0:41 I hate the antichrist
Yi Jianlian is a crazy name
7 years later still no comments. great interview, I just seen Chris the other day still sober and doing great things. he was a legend in our city him and Mark Megna are the only 2 people to make it high level pro from fall river so when we get someone like that we're extremely proud
Really underscores how long we've been worried about AAU's negative impact on basketball in the US. Also hilarious to be reminded of when flopping was something we blamed on international players 😂
A bit of TRUE Sony Studios trivia. .... Have you heard of the wannacry virus that shut down Europe and very nearly smashed the US as well? Loo up Seth Rogan Sony Studios. (Spyfail by James Bamford)
@6:00 so #BillHader hits it out of the park 1 and 2nd season of his smash hit Barry - best male lead 2 Emmys in a row, best director - 1st try, PGA, DGA, Peabody, etc etc etc etc. - What will he do next? :D
Great ending fellas!

I miss these so much. The joking vibe of friends, Jalen making predictions that were never correct, getting off track, etc lol
