Cleaning doesn’t do much good. The space between the rotor tip and the cap terminals is critical. This “wears down” and gets pitted a little bit each time each time it rotates. As the gap gets bigger it changes the timing of the spark. Two things you can do, inspect the inside of the cap for grey spark tracks that aren’t right at the terminals. That indicates a cracked cap and should be replaced. The second thing to do is check the points (if it has them) for pitting and gap. If they are pitted replace, if not, just set the gap. Good luck
