My neighborhood mom I love you Anne Barner
We are deeply sorry to hear about Walter Young's passing. It's incredibly meaningful that I was able to capture his life story in his interview, preserving his legacy and contribution to Oakland's Black history. May he rest in peace. If you'd like to share anything from that interview or reflect on his life, I'm here for you.
RIP Walter

What did the elders leave future generations? I think younger folks don't care since there's nothing left behind. Older generations didn't do anything to pass the torch for future generations. Y'all failed us miserably and its now us making businesses that will hopeless a legacy for future generations. Businesses weren't burned or anything the generation just didn't care about the future and now we really don't care about the past.
My Sister don’t’ blame your people for what the Slave System did to them. This is why we Elders are so involved in the West Oakland Stories. You don’t understand the Slave system tricks that are played on you so that you in up accusing us as your enemy. Don’t you ever forget that it was my generation that SPOKE-UP and the Black generations before us that sacrificed their lives, freedom, families, time, education, etc. You say “Y'all failed us miserably and its now us making businesses that will hopeless a legacy for future generations”. There would be no “us making businesses” if we and our ancestors had not made the sacrifices that we fought for. I personally went to work for Kaiser Engineers in Oakland CA back in the early 1960’s and open the doors wide open for Black people to be employed as White-Collar workers in the City of Oakland. See my life story part 7 with this link it explains it all. westoaklandstories.org/2020/09/ed-howard-life-story-part-7/ REMEMBER: “NO NEGATIVE SPEAK’ with each other.
