There is something I don't understand about kanji. If someone wishes to write something in Japanese, it can be done in hiragana. I had thought that the idea was to have a single symbol representing a concept, rather than spelling it out in hiragana. However kazu is represented by a kanji with 13 strokes; it would seem easier to write the hiragana. What am I missing?
