Huge crocodile swimming in The Great Barrier Reef marine park 5 miles off the coast of Port Douglas

Massive 5 metre crocodile swimming in the ocean at Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia that we were fortunate enough to drive right up to whilst out commercial fishing.
My favorite place in the world, the reefs off Bloomfield, Cooktown and further north are as good as it gets. I find it weird that one day sharks are not a problem then the next the same areas can be unfishable. On bad days I tend to move to shallower water.
Nice one. I don't think you can beat a handline, especially with all the sharks around these days. What type of fishing line do you guys recommend.
Informative and inspiring content in your videos mate. What brand of line do you use for hand-lining?
The more people not returning sharks the better.
Mate the BS you have to go through just to go to work is over the top i worked as a contractor then Master Fisherman back in the early 80s to late 90s and enjoyed it all i was crew on one of the first 2 boats doing live trout on the gbr in your area the paper work was mimanal and no quotas . Before live fish it was 3 week trips to the reef with a 5 ton cold room .I have throught about doing a small operation like yours with no dories but if it is that hard to go to work and cost so much befor a scale hits the box im not shore it is worth it catching the fish was always the easy part . Good luck in the future hope things get better with the change of gov .
Why hide your style and bait used more info would be great
Just wanting to know what kinda hooks you use while you hand line and line strength please mate. Great videos thankyou
Too much compliance for a bloke wanting to earn a living!
What pound line & sinker weight you using mate ?
Awesome ep
That was a great video, Richard. Very informative.
Thanks for your videos man! So interesting & to the point! No waffle!
Crazy how it just disappears into the water and becomes invisible when it’s right there and huge!!!
This information is gold mate! So much respect for you. The amount of paperwork and red tape you have to go through is insane. The building game is just as bad. So glad I stumbled upon your channel. The labor party both state & federally HAVE to go!
Great video, what brand of line u using please?
Mate I'm really enjoying your channel. The BS of all the compliance is mind boggling. After doing all that you then have to find and actually land fish. My hat's off to you !! Keep the vids coming they give the public a better understanding of how hard it is to run a business like yours Cheers
Beware crocodile! Pods of Orca are waiting for you.
Killer whales are afraid of crocodiles.
I feel alot of commercial fishers are misunderstood due too people not seeing how they really operate day to day. Your channel is a great way of educating people on the processes and professionalism required by pros to hold and run a fishing licence i think the only way foward is for government agencies too work with fishers not against it. Love the channel keep it up mate💪
Cheers mate. That’s exactly why we started filming. Over the last few years there has been a significant shift in the attitude of the government and FQ. The industry has been severely reduced by the push from ENGO’s and with what appears 100% support from government we are doomed. Our job is to feed the public and it is evident the public aren’t really aware of what’s going on. If we sit back and don’t educate people on how we really operate as opposed to what people think then we will be all gone. Thank you for your support.
Great Vid Richard, A real eye opener. I had a bit of an idea of all the reporting etc that you have to do, but I must admit I had no idea that it was policed to that extent, never lone everything you do behind the scenes. Tuff gig you got going for Maggie and yourself.. Hope you both can manage to keep up the great work you do. Makes me realise how easy it is for us recco's. Cheers for sharing budd :)
Cheers mate.
Wow that's a lotta work to go fishing each time, the quota carries over if you don't fill it? Cant imagine you'd get more than 10 for mackerel, with all your other expenses it sounds like a bit of a slog.... great lifestyle though. Thanks for sharing. Subbed
The quota season if July 1- June 30. If you haven’t caught your quota you lose it. So if we have a tough season weather wise many fishers get caught out with excess quota and ultimately it’s wasted money.
Great video again mate! We will share on our socials. This labour government has to go! Out the door in 24! 👍
Not sure how you can work all your life and still get it wrong. Fisheries and govt are not your enemy or your issue. Quite simply you are harvesting from a fragile and finite resource. If managed correctly you may be able to keep doing what you love. Unfortunately fisheries history worldwide shows that greed outweighs good management
Unfortunately what we are seeing around Australia is a push from the ENGO’s towards closing down commercial fishing. The management of the resource had been the best in the world and that’s what drove me to enter the industry as owner and operator of 2 commercial licences. Unfortunately the science that has underpinned particular management changes recently has been extremely flawed. As an example Dr Simon Hoyle published a review of one of FQ’s stock assessments and found several examples of Data Misspecification. The stock assessment in question has subsequently enabled non industry investors to step in and gain a large percentage of the quota to control the market. In turn we have seen more than half of the fishing operations leave the industry in the last 2 years alone. What commercial fishers harvest from the reef is recorded down to 0.1kg. And 34% of the entire area is closed completely. What has been a direct result of the closure of our own industry is the surge of imported seafood from countries that have virtually zero management regulations and millions of fishers. To me that is shifting a problem elsewhere without considering the consequences in years to come.
had a similar sort of operation going to yours, had to stop because of all the BS being thrown toward fishers in the form of rules, quota costs and reducing price of product. I know of plenty of others who have stopped operating for the same reasons. The current state of things is ridiculous, and there isn't a realistic way forward with the current framework, particularly with a FQ attitude of "more rules" and "support the investor". Awesome vid, thanks for making it in the public sphere.
Geez - big eye opener. Great look behind the scenes and appreciate you sharing.
You’re right about this government. Things need to change big time.
I hope you can keep doing what you love, the govt are just ridiculous
With all the legalities of the job you do brother from a different mother, I would love to come out and share your utter joy of doing something that puts a giant smile on your dial. Love your content.
Cheers mate.
Mate this is such a good platform to share this information, a lot of rec fishos and the public don't understand the restrictions and level of red tape you fellas go through to operate commercially. Thanks for the great video and its important people understand and support the commercial sector, especially since most love getting a bunch of prawns or fillets from a local fish store and are oblivious. Cheers guys!
fisheries are sleeping on the shark issue. its a massive problem. there needs to be an open season on them. love the vids
If you want a part time deckie..... I love killing fish by hand line.....it brings you in contact with your prey..... using old bike tubes as finger stalls......damn I miss that... anyway tight lines and don't piss the lady boss off.
I would love to see those soundings down here in Brisbane.....not enough fish though..... I have seen the sounder light up like that out from 1770......
I wish that I could have a boss like that.... catch, kill and clean fish in a big boat.🫡😉🫡😉🫡😉👍👍👍💪💪💪💪💪
Is that just electrical tape on your fingers?
Normally bicycle tube
Do you find that there is a big difference in catch rates with Nannie’s if they’re hugging the bottom vs sitting higher in the water column?
Not really, once you get them going they all become more interested. Catching one at a time means it’s much easier for them to lose interest and move on. I find the ones that are sitting higher in the water column move away quicker
great video mate, keep them coming.
Top show keep the good work up What breaking strain line do you use
Cheers mate, 110lb.
fisheries have no clue because the people making the rules doesn't even fish. sharks need to be a bag limit of 5 and 3m
What breed of boat is that.....looks bloody awesome.
Cheers mate. Serves us well, it’s a Cairns Custom Craft.
The sharks certainly need thinning out.
Another great vid guys!
You put that very politely about the sharks every ones sick of the imbalance wake up fisheries.
Thats a big snapper, wish I was there.
What happens to your fingers when a shark takes it?
No issues, we use a piece of push bike tube on the index finger.
Wow indeed.
What would you rather a croc or a shark to get you?
Shark. Chances of survival is much much much greater, if a croc gets you its game over.
NO SHARKS,.... THE CROCS ATE THEM ALL.
@@vicgallimore6756 haha tell that to the tiger sharks on record killing and eating salties. in this depth of water all the advantages lay with a large shark
@@lisalim453 that has nothing to do with large sharks having advantages over salties in this depth of water. Read before you post again many thanks
@@MarcRobertson-gq2kv Salties dominate tiger sharks everywhere.
is that an old stingray hull??
It is a Cairns Custom Craft
Great content ,what size line do you like to use.?going to make a hand line up.👍👍👍
Cheers John, 110lb line for the red fishing and 70-80 for trout.
Great to see underwater footage of the grounds, the fish behaviour and the sharks. Videos like these speak much louder than words. Thanks for posting.
Nice vid guys.. How much to come out? Lol
Great video guys! 👏 How does the line not hurt your hands when you’re pulling them in?!!
Thank you! I have a piece of pushbike tube on the index fingers.
