    My favorite place in the world, the reefs off Bloomfield, Cooktown and further north are as good as it gets. I find it weird that one day sharks are not a problem then the next the same areas can be unfishable. On bad days I tend to move to shallower water.

    Mate the BS you have to go through just to go to work is over the top i worked as a contractor then Master Fisherman back in the early 80s to late 90s and enjoyed it all i was crew on one of the first 2 boats doing live trout on the gbr in your area the paper work was mimanal and no quotas . Before live fish it was 3 week trips to the reef with a 5 ton cold room .I have throught about doing a small operation like yours with no dories but if it is that hard to go to work and cost so much befor a scale hits the box im not shore it is worth it catching the fish was always the easy part . Good luck in the future hope things get better with the change of gov .

    I feel alot of commercial fishers are misunderstood due too people not seeing how they really operate day to day. Your channel is a great way of educating people on the processes and professionalism required by pros to hold and run a fishing licence i think the only way foward is for government agencies too work with fishers not against it. Love the channel keep it up mate💪

      Cheers mate. That’s exactly why we started filming. Over the last few years there has been a significant shift in the attitude of the government and FQ. The industry has been severely reduced by the push from ENGO’s and with what appears 100% support from government we are doomed. Our job is to feed the public and it is evident the public aren’t really aware of what’s going on. If we sit back and don’t educate people on how we really operate as opposed to what people think then we will be all gone. Thank you for your support.

    Great Vid Richard, A real eye opener. I had a bit of an idea of all the reporting etc that you have to do, but I must admit I had no idea that it was policed to that extent, never lone everything you do behind the scenes. Tuff gig you got going for Maggie and yourself.. Hope you both can manage to keep up the great work you do. Makes me realise how easy it is for us recco's. Cheers for sharing budd :)

    Wow that's a lotta work to go fishing each time, the quota carries over if you don't fill it? Cant imagine you'd get more than 10 for mackerel, with all your other expenses it sounds like a bit of a slog.... great lifestyle though. Thanks for sharing. Subbed

    • @richardgilmore36
      @richardgilmore36 7 месяцев назад

      The quota season if July 1- June 30. If you haven’t caught your quota you lose it. So if we have a tough season weather wise many fishers get caught out with excess quota and ultimately it’s wasted money.

    Not sure how you can work all your life and still get it wrong. Fisheries and govt are not your enemy or your issue. Quite simply you are harvesting from a fragile and finite resource. If managed correctly you may be able to keep doing what you love. Unfortunately fisheries history worldwide shows that greed outweighs good management

    • @richardgilmore36
      @richardgilmore36 7 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately what we are seeing around Australia is a push from the ENGO’s towards closing down commercial fishing. The management of the resource had been the best in the world and that’s what drove me to enter the industry as owner and operator of 2 commercial licences. Unfortunately the science that has underpinned particular management changes recently has been extremely flawed. As an example Dr Simon Hoyle published a review of one of FQ’s stock assessments and found several examples of Data Misspecification. The stock assessment in question has subsequently enabled non industry investors to step in and gain a large percentage of the quota to control the market. In turn we have seen more than half of the fishing operations leave the industry in the last 2 years alone. What commercial fishers harvest from the reef is recorded down to 0.1kg. And 34% of the entire area is closed completely. What has been a direct result of the closure of our own industry is the surge of imported seafood from countries that have virtually zero management regulations and millions of fishers. To me that is shifting a problem elsewhere without considering the consequences in years to come.

  • @trevorparnell3735
    @trevorparnell3735 7 месяцев назад

    had a similar sort of operation going to yours, had to stop because of all the BS being thrown toward fishers in the form of rules, quota costs and reducing price of product. I know of plenty of others who have stopped operating for the same reasons. The current state of things is ridiculous, and there isn't a realistic way forward with the current framework, particularly with a FQ attitude of "more rules" and "support the investor". Awesome vid, thanks for making it in the public sphere.
