50 LB Bluefin on the Aztec
1.5 day trip out of San Diego with beautiful, calm seas and 28 grinding fishermen. Tough trip but managed 1 decent size BFT. Only 8 BFT for the whole boat.

Went out for a 2-day Sav-On Tackle sponsored trip. Decent amount of BFT with a few standout 100
That phenix jigstick put in work. Love phenix rods 🤙
Great fish. Happy fishing
Awesome video, looks like an absolute blast! What rod were you using during the daytime fight of the 100+ pound BFT?
In your previous 100 pound bft video I think you said the blue hxw has 80 lb braid, is that still the case? I’m trying to decide if having more line is better than having stronger line. Great videos man, thank you for filming, editing and sharing!
The HXW holds 620 yards of 100lb. That's more line than you likely need. If you want an 80lb reel, step it down to an HX that will hold 500 yards of 80lb. If you're going to be fishing night time with jigs when the big ones are around, stick with 100 lb. I personally have both, but the 80lb gets used less in local San Diego area water and comes in handy down south and then I'll use it for daytime flylining. At times I'll use it locally for a sinker rig during the day.
@ thank you!
RIP Jig Strike
you played the sinker rig fish like a boss
Its great that deck hand is keeping the others from dropping near you and your large fish. People who post these videos, Please watch the language or at least cut them out when you preveiw it up loading your videos. I can't let my kids see your videos with the foul language, sad. Thank you
This boat is bad ass! I went out July 2nd and caught 11 BFT with one standout 60 pounder on the night bite, 10 on bait, crew and captain Greg are awesome 100% recommend hopping on this boat for those who have not yet
Brah, you shoulda been walking toward the bow a few seconds after you yelled biter. No angels, no tangles. That's why your'e wrapped with the rest of the googans.
Nah Brah, the fish was headed for the stern so I walked it down then back. I'll take the small one over wrap on a boat with 28 fisherman. Thanks for the advice though
Nice job and video
Combat fishing is no fun. Too many tangles. At least everyone there knows courtesy and are respectful towards another.
Why does each assist hook have their own split ring on that rip roller One should be sufficient
I dunno but it has teeth marks on it from the last fish I caught
Looks like a bunch of weekend fishermen on a boat
Great observation
Hx k8lled it
looks like a bunch of non-walkwers not following their line and jugs. You're out at that angle, bring them back up
That’s how it goes on a boat of 28
Going on the boat in 2 months.. I cannot wait!
Great crew!
gosh what a fight, what phenix meg. was that
Such a fight. The PE 6-8 I believe
Yeah I used to work on the Aztec to a long time ago add laundry detergent Long Beach sportfishing
What size avet on that jig rod avet hx5/2?
Great video Braddah! Glad your doing some videos and way to pass off the rod! Bad gaff shots but you slayed it!
I read online you're not supposed to high stick that rod. At no point in time did you feel like that was a bad idea?
By the time you boated the beautiful tuna I felt like laying down, I was beat. Great job fighting that fish and not letting go of your rod!
Thank you! I was dead.
Hey friend, what Phenix rod are you using on your jig drop shot setup?
It’s the megaladon pe 6-10
What phenix rod were you using
megaladon PE 6-10
I feel like our gear is finally at the point where it’s not going to be outdated. Unless they go electric and have 100lb braid the size of 10lb test. That reel size is perfect
I kind of wondered about electric then an older man used it and slayed.
Great going on fishing trip there yall😅😅😅😅😅
Old school technique. Wear the arms and back out ! 🤣
nice...good times there with my dad for decades.. sadly my dad passed away last year in july and been hard on me 😭im left with a;; his big game rods and reels he has gotten over the decades
I’m sorry to hear that my friend, he sounds like a badass. I’m sure he’d want to you to use his tackle to keep catching jumbos until the day you meet again. I wish I had kept some of the reels my dad had given me, they are but memories now unfortunately. Cheers amigo 🍻
You were well taking care of Amigo. 200# on a 1.5 day...Awesome. You had the Avet drag nailed.
Thank you!
Great job! Only recommendation is when you do lay that rod or any on the rail, palm the reels side plate or cover the reel with your hand, helps with the rod/wrist twist!! Cool vid and some beautiful BFT!🎉
Hey Nick this is Kevin, awesome video and great job. Thanks for the fish as well, and great fishing with you
My man!! Can’t wait to see you on the next one brother!
@@BiggieTuna760 For sure, tight lines! 😄
You expertly fought that fish! Your arm was probably burning up, but you didn't give an inch.
Such a fun trip look forward to fishing with you again! -Toby
Thanks Toby! You’re awesome dude
What a great catch great fishing guys good job
Awesome video, good job. Acid wrap can help with rod twist
We where out the following day on the 'new lo ann......got a 130lb and the deck boss landed a 230+ it taped at 225 but the damn thing was soooooo f'n fat it was funny......just a 'pig....
I was super fortunate to land two of the 7 caught on our trip. They were around the 100lb size
What reel are you using?
Avet HXW with 100lb on a 2x4 seeker OSP for the first fish at night. The day fish was the Avet HX narrow with 80lb on the Phenix megaladon pe 6-10
Just picked up a 2x4. Can’t wait
@@BiggieTuna760I also use 60# on the HXR and 100# on the HXWR. I use the Mak 15T w/60# for the day time sinker rig.
What was your tackle setup?
The night fish was a seeker OSP 2x4 80-130 rod with avet hxw and 100lb test with a 300 gram sk silver polka dot glow jig. The day fish was a phoenix megaladon jigging rod pe 6-10 with a drop shot sinker rig 12 oz sinker and 2/0 ringed circle hook. Avet hx reel with 80lb main and 60 lb leader
@@BiggieTuna760 how long is your leader and what type of knot do you tied it with?
You got pliahs, love it! Looks like a great trip out.
It was! Dude we need to convince your dad to change his trip to a 1.5
This is Capt. Patrick. Awesome video. Onlything better was the fun we all had. See you all next year!
What are you setups in the video ?
Seeker Tac 80 with a Talica 12 and a United Composites 30-60 with a Avet MXL raptor
Capt’n Patrick and the JigStrike 💯
Omg thats amazing
Good on you for helping out Matt, could tell he was super excited about the experience!
Matt was a ton of fun. Awesome trip with all of you
I’m surprised how people have a problem with fighting yellowtail. Pound for pound the toughest fight but using tuna gear shouldn’t be a problem. I’m a bit of a wind down and short pump so they can’t sound or run that’s on forty mono not 100 pound braid
I always say the same thing about them. Good eating too! Thanks for watching
Totally agree with you Nick, I like fighting my fish standing up a lot more then on the rail. Forgot his name but the buff deckhand with all the tattoos is great. He was on a long trip I was on and he was great. Congrats on the beautiful tuna!
Ryan
Thank you! Yea man, overall great crew
