Concept Plans for Elementary Music (Plan an Entire Year of Elementary Music Part 3)
Have you ever spent an hour (or two) scrolling through lesson ideas for elementary general music, and had nothing to show for it?
When we plan with a concept plan, each activity we choose is purposeful. It builds on the previous activity and gets students ready for what comes next.
Planning lessons with a framework for learning helps us save time because we know exactly what type of activity we're looking for.

Our repertoire is the context for learning! Let's consider how to analyze a song for classroom use, find sources for songs, and streamline our choices into song lists. Kodaly training programs emphasize song analysis, but song analysis is not just for Kodaly teachers! Song analysis gives us more choices and purposeful flexibility for selecting repertoire. This is the second video of our yearly ...

Thank you for these nuggets about assessment! I remember watching this video some time ago and it helped me to understand what I needed to work on with assessment. I like that you acknowledge that you are still a learner and I'm interested to see where your thoughts lie on assessment now. Lately, I've been finding that assessment is most flawed when my goal is to only assess skills. I've done a bit of reading on concept-based curriculum and have found that when I can assess understanding of concepts (based on skills) then students are able to better make connections and transfer their learning. One thing I am still working on is making assessment of understanding manageable when seeing hundreds of students per week. I think this is where deciding on what's most important to assess comes in and really laying out curriculum so that it spirals. Thanks again for all your nuggets of information!!

Where can I find the Repertory List and can you write out the syllables you use for quarter, half, whole dotted half, eighth and 16th notes, please. Thank you. I have done this same type of planning for years of teaching, but have never seen it put together this way. I have had to write my own music theory for elementary students from scratch and this has been helpful to know that I have always been on the right track. The challenge is finding music and activities for each concept. I have had to come up with all of this on my own. So this has been helpful. I am hoping to improve my curriculum as I teach through my scope and sequence that I have created. My situation is that I only see my students for 1 day a week, but for a whole hour.

You are a great singer. I’ve never had any vocal training as I’ve always went the band route rather than the choir route. Do you believe a new K-5 music teacher in my position would benefit from private singing lessons? I want to sing pleasantly for my students, teach proper singing technique, and also take care of my voice?

Outstanding videos always! Your passion for teaching and methodology is overflowing! For me, there has always been a difference between how music teachers talk, and how the rest of the school talks (ie, music talk vs. ELA talk). You have bridged that gap for me, and I have never seen that effectively done in my years of teaching. Your approach connects both worlds, and although this might not be something particularly new to many music teachers, it certainly feels relatively new to me, so a great big "Thank You" for that. *I hope that all makes sense. I also want to echo others' sentiments that you have a beautiful voice. And lastly, the production quality of your videos (and website, and other things) is ALWAYS top notch! Super impressive! Keep up the outstanding work!
