Our Land - Wild Camping on Dartmoor
Against the backdrop of the upcoming Supreme Court case, where the fate of the only legal wild camping area in England is to be decided, two friends trek and wild camp across Dartmoor’s captivating wilderness, from north to south. Along the way, they interview those they cross paths with, and capture their perspectives on this historic battle between a wealthy landowner and the public’s freedom.

Jon Moses from Right to Roam is interviewed by the BBC about the campaign, the law surrounding trespass and why access matters.
Pray & hope it stays for all to enjoy, just follow the camp code then all is well 😊😊
As long as all leave no trace then no problem, please enjoy & respect Dartmoor 😊
All Welcome as Long as You Respect it🤣🤘
I lived in Walkhampton as a teenager and camped over by Ditsworthy Warren House many times. In those days it was just camping - no idea when the wild bit turned up.
About three years ago some friends of mine bought a few acres of woodland near Bruton in Somerset . They have been working hard since then to turn it into a wildlife haven . It has no public right of way and a padlocked gate . Last weekend people from Bristol broke in and used it as a site for an illegal rave . They refused to leave when asked . Owners photographed vehicles and called police . One officer turned up and said there was nothing he could do . Loud music all night , people finally left 11am on Sunday . Whole area littered with cans bottles takeaway packaging and human excrement . NO ATTEMPT MADE by any of the participants to leave site as they found it , grass verges churned up damage to trees and huge disturbance to wild life .
I wish I could hike there, really.
What a great video chaps, keep it up. 👍
Great video! Something I feel strongly about too. I have just completed 2 river hikes from source to sea. One did not have much access to the actual river, I felt it shouldn't have all been private fisheries and land.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video and have forwarded to family in Telluride, CO and Berlin, Germany. I'm in Califonia and we all have a love and calling to the outdoors and what it does for one's soul. How did Supreme Court decide??
I loved this. My favourite bit was the train journey at the start - the smiles and excitement at getting out of the city and heading west for adventure. Dartmoor never disappoints.
fantastic , thank you.
Thanks Such a Good Video and a message that We should keep this Right to Roam Not For the sake of it but because it Gives us that chance to step off the World and connect with our Natural sense of ourselves !! We are all needing more time to be still and Peaceful and re charge in a World that is Fast Paced And Dis engaging from Nature !!! Thanks Again see you on the road !!! Lastly in The words Of Byron There is pleasure in the Pathless woods ,There is Rapture in the Lonely shore, There is a Society Where no Man exists By his beauty and his Roar !, I love man not less But Nature More !!! Genius and so Relevant today
Amazing video! I was really shocked to see that you don't even have 1000 subscribers. The cinematography and editing are outstanding, and the storytelling is both informative and captivating, with a somewhat journalistic flair. I especially enjoyed the interviews with people along the way, hearing about their experiences and opinions on the matter added a lot of depth. I realise I often take for granted that the right to roam is the default in Scotland and that we don’t face encounter issues at all. I hope the people win in this situation, and I also hope England gets its own version of the right to roam, along with more opportunities for wild camping in more areas. Liked and subscribed, hope to see more videos like it!
It is absolutely disgusting that just one hideous man who happens to be very rich can threaten the freedoms of tens of thousands of nature lovers by trying to take OUR right to camp out and enjoy Dartmoor, he is the carer of a small portion of the moor, he does not have the right to stop us enjoying the rest of the moor. This must be fought against by everyone.
Wonderful video, full of humanity. Well done for showing how easy these hard won rights are to lose
The fact that this right to sleep on our land has to be fought for at all is the biggest crime, thanks for doing this.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Many many thanks to you both for this video. I live near Dartmoor and I have never not had access to it for hiking most of my life. I’m in my 60’s, a farmers daughter and I believe no one has the right to own land - I believe people are simply custodians of our beautiful landscapes and the fact money can determine whether or not I have the right to roam the landscapes I am borne from makes me angry. I am currently working my way towards a goal of solo camping on Dartmoor & I want to be able to do it a lot whenever and wherever without it costing me money I don’t have. Just Thankyou .
Thank you! Great video. Dartmoor is my favourite place to experience glorious flora and fauna and, most importantly, peace! Wild camping must be kept as a right for all. And all who camp in her beauty must respect her!
So important
Great video, thanks for uploading. Please do keep up the fight for our right to roam and to be able to respectfully camp on Dartmoor whilst strictly adhering to all leave no trace ethics. Fun fact: I know Howard Mallet as he was in my year at school, he`s a really lovely bloke, I like him so much that I named my excellent tent peg hammer in honour of him, and I told him this the last time I saw him (True story). 🤣👍
Never had any bother wild camping. Just do it, ignore the law. I leave the campsite as it was, even making sure the grass is standing up. Fires can be made like this : with your knife, carve out a slab of grass a foot square, put stones around it, start your fire, put everything back as you found it when leaving, finally replacing the slab of grass. I take a glass jam jar full of material soaked in parrafin. Petrol is OK but tends to explode, parrafin is much easier to use. You get an instant fire. Never let your fire spread, that's what the stones are for.
@@billgates-qi9st hear hear, absolutely, a basic solution to a basic issue….
Great video and thanks for highlighting the issues. Let's hope common sense prevails.
nice one!!
Will there be a verdict today?
This video was so lovey, thank you guys. Dartmoor is so precious, and I live near Okehampton, so get the most wonderful view of it near to where I live. As always seems to be the cause, the few ruin it for the many, by leaving litter etc. If everyone just respected this wonderful place, then I hope that wild camping will go on being allowed there forever. Blessings from Jilly & Madge the rescue greyhound, from West Devon, England. xxx
Keep up the fight!!
Such a well put together video. I've been camping on the moors since the 80's. It will break my heart that not only me but others will not be able to experience the challenge and the beauty of the moors. I pray that Darwall loses.
Ignore the law, you are free to do as you please providing you are considerate and follow the country code.
Is the famous prison still open? The weather makes it all the more romantic. Great job guys!
If this was my country of Nz, you wouldn't get a look in. If it's termed "Private Property" then it's Private. You see the landowner has the final say. However, if the landowner uses part of that land, to graze his bulls, and you get chased, it's no good crying to mummy and daddy, YOU deal with it. But worse than bulls, are calving cows, protecting their calves. They will attack you. And if you get zapped by an E fence, haha. You nung nungs don't seem to understand the connection between food production, for you, and land required to produce that food. This attitude of, "It's my right." In another country, in a different century, you would have been scalped. Think about that. It's not all about YOU.
This is about camping in the national park of Dartmoor and not farming land.
Most of Dartmoor is farmed with cattle sheep and ponies roaming the land owned by landowners. It has never been public land. Just because it is a National Park does not mean you can do what you want. Other National Parks such as South Downs and New Forest you keep to designated paths.
When it comes to a right to roam, should we all camp out in your back garden? What, that's different? Why? Every inch of land is owned in England, why should you demand a right of trespass, yet you would not allow others to trespass on your land. Uneducated moron.
if the supreme court upholds the ban : key points to consider: Human Rights Grounds: A challenge at the ECHR would need to be based on specific rights in the European Convention, such as: Article 8 (Right to respect for private and family life): This could be argued if the ban is seen as disproportionately limiting access to nature or traditional practices. Article 1 of Protocol No. 1 (Protection of property): While this is generally focused on property ownership, it might be invoked in a nuanced way to argue that public access to land is an important right. Public Access to Nature: The argument would likely hinge on the balance between private property rights and public access to nature. Dartmoor has historically allowed wild camping, and this cultural heritage could be part of the argument for protecting access. Environmental and Cultural Considerations: Some challenges at the ECHR have touched on the right to enjoy a healthy environment or access culturally significant lands. If a case could be made that the ban on wild camping undermines these rights, it could form the basis of an ECHR case. Last Resort: The ECHR only hears cases after all domestic legal avenues have been exhausted, meaning an application could only be made after the UK Supreme Court has made its final decision. If the ban is framed as a human rights issue-perhaps concerning access to nature, cultural practices, or environmental protection-there could be a valid basis for taking it to the ECHR.
We came to the protests yesterday, an amazing show of support and solidarity. ✊
Dartmoor is such an important place and the right to roam and wild camp is worth fighting for! It's an important point you make too about leaving no trace. More than just leaving the place as you find it we should all leave it better than when we arrived. ❤
❤❤❤
They are trying to stop wild camping in England.Youbcan still do it in Scotland without any hassle though.
I can’t understand why they are trying to ban wild camping on Dartmoor! What is their reasoning?
#outstanding👌 Never give up, never give in. Love wins ❤ Tuesday 8th October is the big day🙏🍀🤞
Shared, thank you. Support right to roam.
England is a constant battle between the haves and have nots. Good work on supporting the case for our freedom to roam. One day maybe we will be classed as citizens instead of subjects...
If you have watched this video, comment to boost its ranking to make more people aware of this right to roam.
❤
Great film! We have no wilderness left in England but Dartmoor at least comes close. Free-access wild camping on the moor for a night or two is the closest many of us can ever get to truly escaping the hectic and claustrophobic drudgery of modern life.
Commenty commenty. Boosty boosty.
I live near the river Plym not far from Dartmoor and parts of the river was opened up to the public as far as Shaugh bridge. Some time ago the land owner closed it down and I agree with the close. People would go down there and throw litter everywhere including loads of plastic bottles into the river. Some people are out and out morons and because of them none of us can enjoy those parts of the river. Fortunately idiots won't go to the high moors because it takes effort to get out there so littering is much less.
Death Stranding 2 graphics looking so realistic. Impressive.
allemansrätten should be implied in every country, " humans right to freely roam the land" ( by nordic law)
Good piece and thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Well done Guy's, keep up the good fight. Very important issue. Enjoyed the content.
Beautiful <3 Amazing work documenting everything. Brings me back to my time in England...
Hello? Where are all those first group of campers shi**ing? That landscape looks unsuited for mass burial of turds. And i hate seeing wet wipes littering the land. I walk long walks. I also wildcamp. Woodlands distant from waterways + Trowel + deep hole burial = 👍. But i dont see that as suitable - you need amenities people.
