Grazie per la condivisione// I have been listening to this powerful and solemn mass for many days and almost every day, which gives me the sensation of being projected from the earth to the clouds in the sky and being ever closer to the divine dimension. Bruckner's music is a powerful, fervent prayer to God and his Creation. It is music of inexpressible beauty, which shakes you to the core and leaves a deep mark. I would listen to it over and over again, it softens the soul and gives me goosebumps. Thanks for sharing//

It's a shame, that Price has never sung Carmen on stage. She's just hypnotizing in this role. I love her strong, confident and full of emotions performance. That being said, I doubt you could find any better cast, than this one. Franco Corelli, perhaps the greatest Don José ever recorded, shows his mastery again. The roles of young, innocent girls, clearly fitted Mirella Freni's repertoire. A very convincing Micaëla. 110% level sweetness in "Ma mère, je la vois" duet with Corelli. Last but not least, Robert Merrill as a manly, dashing Escamillo. I think he understood well, what it takes to perform that role.

The only version that I've heard live or on recording, in which the Triumphal March is played as it should be and was written: with pomp, splendor and majesty. One can almost see the "red blasts of the trumpets" to quote Wilde!

I believe this is what E Schwartzkopf would have sounded like if she continued to sing into the 1970s with the new style of recording in big spaces and recording studios with vast "atmosphere" and the acoustic were bigger and the singer farther from the mic with an actual reverb instead of that tight, close, pinched sound of the 40s and 50s and early 60s. This is PARTIALLY why Janowitz and Norman sound so much more pleasing aurally to the modern ear (those used to hearing classical recordings from 1970-onwards) than E.S. and the others from the golden era.
