The 6420 i geuss main home where it usally is resides in my hometown stratford ontario lol
I just picked up four SD75M units and because they are older production, i find there is no warranty. Mine are Tsunami1 decoders.
Steam generator sound your hearing, top left infront of cab.
Ah ok thanks for clearing that up I wondered what it was!
Very well detailed
Great video, thanks!
No problem!
And that information is for the real one
The pony truck wheels are black like the rest of the wheels and have a white star in the center
Nice review! It's a shame that the poor ditchlight design hasn't changed since the first run of these.
Thank you! Yeah it is a shame I really liked a lot of other things about the locomotive but I’ll probably mainly be sticking with athearn Genesis and scaletrains
What Athearn did is use the Soundtrax economy decoder. For the SD40 locomotives so they have the start up sequence. I really like the RTR LINE of locomotives. I have over 8 BNSF SD40-2 locomotives I used Cannon cab interior kits. With amazing results.
Ah ok I wasn’t aware of that! And agreed I like the ready to run line of well. Good sound and good runners. I’m jealous of your 8 SD40s I definitely would like to have more. They’ve always been a favorite of mine for sure
@@TrainShenanigans844 I get most of my trains from swap meets held across the state a few of my SD-40s from swap meets I got one with sound for 30$ because it got dropped onto the floor the chassis was undamaged the shell however was very very damaged. I got an old Blue box she'll for 10$ at the same meet. I'll try to make a video of them running on my club layout.
Go with the foam, you’ll be happy in the long run
I appreciate the feedback I’ve definitely decided that’s what I’m going to do just trying to decide what thickness to do now
Cool video and love the Ready to Roll series got a couple of the SD40 ish locos also, strong runners! Love the lighting in your train room and the low angle of that run by looks great, some really cool rolling stock on there also, great video! -Ken
I use to have quite a few of the ready to roll series when I was younger they’ve always been great locomotives. And thank you the lighting was definitely an upgrade from the old fluorescent lights that used to be installed. Thanks for the feedback!
Very nice and attractive UP fef class locomotive model, I hope to be able to purchase one of these models in the future for myself later on.
Man I wish I could find atleast one of these BNSF
Thanks for the vid. Wondering if the numberboards light up?
Yes they do
@@TrainShenanigans844 thank you
I WISH THAT ATHEARN WOULD COME DOWN ON THE PRICES OF THESE BEAUTIFUL DISTINCTIVE SOUGHT AFTER MODELS! IF THEY WOULD ONLY BE WILLING TO MAKE A NONPOWERED MODEL FOR THE MODRL RAILROADERS THAT CANNOT AFFORD THE EXPENCIVE ONES.COMON, ATHEARN!IF UPU MAKE THEM IN NONPOWERED MODELS, WE WILL BUY THEM!I NEED AT LEAST 15 ON THESE IN HO SCALE UNDECORATED.I WISH I COULD AFFORD TO BUY THEM.
Glad to find instructional video with mu of more than 2 engines. Very helpful Thx.
No problem glad you found it helpful!
Not much of a fan of intermountain models, especially the older runs, they are really light and the ditch lights on the CN SD40-2W units are pretty mid. The only reason I’d recommend Intermountain is the detail because it’s pretty good, or if you want a Comfort Cab equipped SD40-2 as Intermountain is the only brand to produce this variant.
Yeah I wasn’t super pleased and don’t plan on buying any more intermountain locomotives. Like you said the detail is pretty good but that wasn’t enough for me to justify keeping this one
I have one of these. I have BNSF #5127, and it’s a great model.
Can’t ever go wrong with them. Out of all the engines I have I have yet to be disappointed by anything
The high pitched whine is the dynamo that provides power to the lights. While the Athearn version comes in a better looking box and has better factory sounds than the BLI version, the only plus the BLI version has is the metal boiler. Now I have to see if I can get a better box for my BLI version. For passenger cars and water tenders I recommend Walthers Proto UP cars for the passenger cars and ScaleTrains for water tenders. Preorder the new run of tenders as the run from last year had massive issues.
Ok I figured it was something like that thanks for clearing that up! And yes I plan on ordering the scaletrains water tender and trying to find some walthers passenger cars. They pop up for sale every now and then it seems like.
What function is the firebox light on? I have that same engine and my fire box light didn’t come on when I pressed function 0.
It should be either function 5 or 6. Function 0 just turns on the headlight
I don't think the firebox has its own function, I think it comes on when power is applied to the tracks. I have the Race to Promontory edition of 4014 from Athearn and that's what I've seen when I put it on the track and put power to it
@@steamfan4014 This one has its own function maybe they changed that on this run
@@TrainShenanigans844 Maybe they did. Guess I'll find out when I get one
Recently got one for myself and I'm very happy about it. Haven't run it in yet since I didn't have a layout, but you're right, the firebox light comes on with function 5
Do the number boards light up??
Yes I forgot that the function that turns them on is part of the extended functions I believe it’s F21 or something like that
Have just got mine. Out of the box it's F24 for Numberboards and Groundlights. The Front Class Lights are F25 but the rear Class Lights are wired up to the rear ditchlights and turn on with them
@@stevewood5993 Thanks I knew it was somewhere in the extended functions part I just couldn’t remember which one exactly off the top of my head
Psyched you posted this. Grew up in East Lansing watching many GT, CN, and CV stuff running through town in the 70s & 80s!!!
Oh nice you’re a little ways north of me then! Wish I grew up during that time but I’m glad some of it was still around for me to see!
There having problems with shipping containers coming from china..that's why everything is 2 or 3 months late. Like your display cabinets.
Yeah that’s kind of what I’ve heard as well. And thanks!
Getting mine hopefully today great video
Thanks! And good deal man I’m sure you’ll enjoy it
Thanks for the video. You brought up an interesting point when mentioning the sound of Athearn versus Scaletrains. I'm curious as far as accuracy between Athearn & Scaletrains, I'm wondering if it's the proportion of the sounds that is more accurate on one versus the other? From videos I've watched, I always felt the Scaletrains horn sounded weak, and the Athearn horn sounded much louder. But the comment you made on Scaletrains Engine sound and other sounds being louder but their horn is lower made me think that maybe their proportion is just a little bit off. In other words the scaling of how loud the horn should be in relation to all other sounds might be different, whereas Aburn has lower Bell, engine, and other sounds and their horn is significantly louder? This of course is difficult to gauge when watching a video, but it might be an interesting topic for one of your future videos! Thanks again for the great work.
I appreciate the feedback! And yes now you have me wondering which one would be more accurate. It is nice to be able to hear the horn clearly on an athearn locomotive while it’s at speed versus it’s almost inaudible on a Scaletrains locomotive.
They are being delivered this coming week to us hobby shops and Canadian shops the following week.
When did you get your units?
Just got them a few days ago
The locomotive looks nice but it’s not worth the money, I have the Märklin/Trix UP 844 for 629€ (673$) and it has more features, dynamic smoke and more lights like the BLI UP 844
Certain things I don’t pay retail for. A lot of the stuff I order is from a local hobby shop that I get a good price from
Nice locos I love tsunami 2 sound ! Waiting on mine from Tony’s trains
Great looking locomotives, they sound amazing too!
Thanks! Definitely can’t go wrong when it comes to athearn
Beauties!
nice looking locos, Athearn right?
Yes they are athearn
That CN wide Cab is really cool!!!
Nice collection of engines, love all of the Athearns!!! That's a great looking engine, I'm with you on the spinning bearing caps, now the stuff that doesn't have them frustrates me a bit, just makes the engine and cars look right as they roll past for them to be spinning! Do you know if all of the new Genesis have the spinning roller cap bearings? Do Scaletrains have the spinning roller bearings? Great review!
Thank you! There’s many more that aren’t pictured that are packed away still. And yes all of the new genesis engines from here on out should come with spinning caps. I believe scaletrains has had spinning caps ever since they’ve been in business.
@@TrainShenanigans844 Awesome thanks for the info, once ya get stuff with the spinning caps it's just hard to go back to any that don't. Have a great Sunday man, thanks again. -Ken
@@sunnysiderails397 Yeah I know exactly what you mean. I definitely can’t justify replacing all my rail cars and engines with ones that have spinning bearing caps though that’s for sure lol
@@TrainShenanigans844 LOL neither can I, too much money in stuff that doesn't have spinning caps:) I've been having some fun with shots like the opening in this video, I did it first with some of my older cars with no spinning caps, then I did it with my newer Athearn tankers, the shot just doesn't really work without the spinning caps LOL. I want spinning caps, interiors, ditch lights, number board lights, primed for grime, real chains etc... And that's why they cost 300 bucks I guess LOL... Happy Sunday man! -Ken ruclips.net/video/1WjzxdKtnMY/видео.html
I was following you perfectly until you got confused! After that your video was way too confusing! Redo this but only include the necessary steps.
Nice, I'm starting my little layout next year DCC. It may be a bit hard but I'll get into it.
Good luck with it! And yeah it’s challenging but not too complicated once you get used to it. I just get impatient that mine isn’t done yet sometimes
@@TrainShenanigans844 Thanks man
SUPER BEAUTIFUL MODEL,ONLY THE YELLOW DEFROSTERS ON THE FRONT WINDOWS ARE MISSING,AND THE CHAIN THAT CONNECTS THE LEVER OF THE MANUAL RELEASE TO THE FRONT HOOK,HE ALSO LACKS THE LIGHTS THAT ILLUMINATE THE TROLLEYS AND THE 4 LADDERS
Nice looking locomotive n cool layout u have
Nice
Super. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
I don’t get caught up in the color debate. Locomotives get sun faded. They get dirty. Some get washed. Some don’t. Repainted units will be more vibrant than older units. Paint may not always be the exact same shade depending on which shop did the work or what the atmospheric conditions are at the time of paint. Etc. If the shade is off a tad by the time you weather it all will be well
I guess I’ve never really thought of it that way. At some point I plan on having everything weathered in one way or another so I suppose at that point it won’t matter
Bro dump the scale trains, honestly I love athearn and I would support Athearn any day anywhere, love the video well done
I don’t plan on getting rid of anything. I’ve stuck with Athearn for years even back when I was younger and just had a DC layout. All companies have their ups and downs and in my opinion Athearn and Scaletrains are pretty much the best you can get depending on what it is you’re looking for
Nice
Love union Pacific locomotives
Just throwing it out there, but I'd love a comparison between the scaletrains and the athearn UPs aside, whatever you notice besides the color difference.
I don’t have 2 of the same type of engine in UP but I do suppose I could make that work. Or maybe I’ll just pick up an athearn dash 9 in UP and do a side by side comparison
@@TrainShenanigans844 would be probably more ideal to wait for this fall's st d9 release, which is the same up original version with the low boards. the most recent run that came out last spring is ex sp
@@CentralJerseyRailfan that’s right I forgot they did another run. Maybe I’ll just wait and get a couple of those then
