CfEY celebration of resilience & recovery 2023 - Thanks from Shadow Schools Minister Stephen Morgan

John Hattie | Recovery and Resilience in the education and youth sectors during and after Covid-19

Schools around the world exhibited remarkable resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a consequence, schools defied many people's expectations and young people's learning suffered much less than it would've done without the brilliant work of dedicated teachers and school leaders. CfEY's Head of Policy, Baz Ramaiah, interviews legendary education research John Hattie to examine the evidence ...

How can schools embed uniform policies that fit all students?

School uniform policies should set out guidelines for students on clothes that allow them to comfortably engage in school life, but can sometimes unintentionally discriminate. How can schools and youth organisations work together to deliver high quality careers education?
Просмотров 762 года назад
Careers guidance is a broad church of different activities and interventions over time for young people. Youth organisations also have a key role to play in supporting young people’s ...
How can schools prevent and address peer-to-peer sexual harassment?
Просмотров 2182 года назад
A year ago Ofsted published their review into sexual abuse in state and independent schools, finding that harmful sexual behaviours are so common in schools that young people perceive them to be normal. Research by The Girl Guiding Association found that over two thirds of girls have experienced sexual harassment in schools. In addition, Ofsted finds that students feel the RSHE curriculum does ...
Are tutors the solution to the achievement gap?
Просмотров 572 года назад
The attainment gap in England has widened over the pandemic. Tutoring is an unusually effective intervention for driving pupil academic progress. It’s also generally popular with parents and politicians. If properly directed at disadvantaged students, it could close the attainment gap. However, the mixed success of The National Tutoring Programme in the past two years suggests that this plan ma...

My son had so many occupational therapy sessions as a young child. They never diagnosed him. He struggled with ball games and PE, handwriting was a big struggle and still is! He's in his 30s now! Only his year 4 teacher helped. She gave me a leaflet and said her son had dyspraxia. It suggested swimming and trampolining. I took him trampolining and he did very well, gaining lots of certificates. It involves large motor skills so was easier for him. It helped his confidence enormously. He became a musician, excelled in music, and gained lots of good grade Gcses. He was allowed to use a computer to type. But the frustration can still bubble up at times, and his coordination is still an issue. Shame he was never diagnosed formally.

I have to laugh. Even though one girl was accepted into the life program at college and was accepted into the cheerleaders squad, she was rejected from sororities due to down syndrome. It would be worse if she was rejected from every single thing in life. Even though people with disabilities are encouraged to mainstream, there is still discrimination and prejudices going around. It would also be a shame if people with disabilities would be rejected from partaking in sheltered workshops. Some people with down syndrome could be good natured. When this happens, people use and take advantage of that person.

This is a superb video series. Most of what I've seen only features people talking /explaining the various conditions - which I truly appreciate as well - but seeing and hearing from the children themselves and clips of the school environment makes it easier to understand.

One of your suggested readings, "The Reason I Jump by Naoki Hogashida" has been shown to be a hoax and was almost certainly written by his mother, just to let you know. Whilst some non-speaking Autistic people can communicate via text and/or sign language, not only has facilitated communication (the method of which Naoki purportedly wrote the book) been thoroughly debunked but the writing style of the text matches that of his mother.

The fact that they both so uncomfortable and have to start changing the subject kind of demonstrates why the problem exists. They have to keep adding "but other groups have problems if you measure it differently." and "It's very complicated". Even facing the problem makes them feel bad, so how can it possibly be solved? The guy even ends up arguing that immigrants do better because institutional racism makes them struggle more. He's so tied to the idea that britain is racist to minorities...he ends up arguing that the racism must be a good thing.

My father used to say why do you need an education. It was very intimidating for me as a child. I enjoyed school and like meeting new people. However it doesn't matter what education you have. If you don't have the right language, as in speaking, you won't get a job. My mother is a non traveller, so I learnt to change my voice depending who I was talking to. Peer pressure works both ways. In primary school I was one of the top students, as soon as I went to senior school it was down hill from there. Not the same reception from the secondary school, I went from top to the bottom. Even my form tutor in my reports questioned why I was at the bottom. Luckily the head mistress must of read it. I was put back up in the last two years. Unfortunately my father didn't believe in education and influenced me to become a builder. This isn't me, I like intellect, and when there is no one to talk to, it becomes a lonely place. I do hope the peer pressure changes, as for some of the children they are suited to the traveller way of life, however back then the children that where different, speaking for myself, didn't have a voice. With my grandfather it was different, they talked philosophy and politics, but my father's generation to me was different. I enjoyed the elders. It would of been nice to have both options available. It would of been nice if it was my choice. I am speaking for myself, it may be different for others. I love my traveller roots as well as my Gorga roots, however there are parts that I don't agree with, with both sides.

Discrimination and racism is not the only reason and it doesn’t always happen. They can’t speak for all and all over the world . why we never went. It’s the brainwashing and mingling and exposure to things we were being protected From. And mainstream schools are only getting worse and even non traveller parents are now homeschooling their children. We are smart enough, and educated in ways that school cannot teach you. All my family is very successful, self taught , and self made. These women do not know what their talking about and if Travellers started going through mainstream schooling , their lineage, tradition and blood line will be watered down years to come. They do not even look or sound like travellers.

I disagree ‘the Government have got it the wrong way round’. They are both equally as important. Vocabulary just hasn’t been exposed as much as it should have been during early years and Primary, We expose children to children’s books that just do not have sufficient vocabulary.
