We take the 2021 KTM 500 EXC to the MX track!
Decided to see how the 2021 KTM 500 EXC would do on a real motocross track! This will serve as a baseline as we modify the bike and make changes/improvements. The location is Pax Trax Motocross Park in Bunnell, Florida

I have a 2003 FZ1 that is as close to perfect a motorcycle as I've ever ridden or owned. I've been riding for approximately 60 years. I have several bikes now including a Ducati Diavel AMG that's been flashed, goosed, and tampered with in every way. It's insanely fast and all the other good things. But, if I had to pick between the FZ or the Diavel the FZ would be the one I'd choose to stay. I've raised and extended the handlebars, added end mirrors, a quick shifter, a custom seat, lowered the pegs an inch and that's it. The powerband is not to be believed. The only issue I have with this bike is that it's so intuitive I sometimes forget I'm riding a motorcycle. I think it and it's already doing it. An amazing machine.
I had 2010 FZ1 for my first bike. It was present to me for 55th birthday. Crash bars and touring screen added first. I got custom seat made. It was wonderful except when out riding with friends I had to ask them to store my stuff Loved it til I tried 2013 FJR1300A
Excellent. You addressed some of my concerns regarding handle bars, power, and ECU. However, sometimes, "depending on the rider", having a bike that's overly "locked-up" can help rides who, 'lack wrist control', till their skills improve to those that you have. THEN they can "unlock" the bike for more FUN!
Did you drop the tire pressure down to around 15 psi?
Hey bro do you have all the mods on a list?
I have the same bike great bike. But its not a sport tourer.
do you still own it? Any major issiues?
I do still own it! I ran into one of the worst major issues you can have as a 2nd gen FZ1 owner. 06-07 FZ1s were prone to frame cracking issues & mine did end up cracking. I had to swap the frame for a 2008 frame. I still love the bike but for anyone looking to buy one I would highly recommend buying an 08+ as swapping the frame was not fun lol. The only other common issue with them is the factory stator but that’s an easy fix for around $300 & personally I haven’t had any issues with mine.
@@JGreenwood238 I went for a 2010 Speed triple. It's a smooth dream machine. I even sold my 17 Tuono for it.
damn really, Sold your Tuono V4 for a speedy? i currently own a 2009 Street Triple R and a CBR1000RR and i am looking to sell my CBR for another faster naked, my options are very limited unless i wanna sell my streety too, but whats your thoughts on the Speedy vs Tuono? @@jerryx2000
Sport touring tyres acually provide more grip on the street then hyper sports tyres, unless your are constantly doing high speeds or heavy breaking and accelerating to keep them at there desired heat level which is quite high and very difficult.
I agree, when I bought this bike it had Dunlop Q4s on it and I almost laid it down the first time I rode it under 50 degrees due to the rear wheel losing traction. Most recently I ran Michelin Power 5s & was extremely happy with them, just replaced the tires again a few weeks ago & decided to give the Michelin Road 6s a try. So far I really like them! I live in Florida now & afternoon rain showers are a regular thing, both the Power 5 & Road 6 tires perform phenomenally in the rain.
@@JGreenwood238 yeh I'm running s/t tyre on my cbr1000rr. Never had a slip ect. And the centre is alot harder so they won't get a flat spot. so with a sports tyres it's gunna wear there first and can't use them beautiful sticky sides either because we need to replace them only because the centre wore out without wearing them sides out. ( really hot climates you could get away with sports tyres on street as they will heat up enough and get all it's benefits. Track use: sport tyres all the way. Hit brakes constantly on the track, fast riding perfect 👌
I find this cap. had sport touring tyres for 2 years on my Fazer 600 and trying s22 supersport tyres just made it a whole new bike, never worrying about leaning or riding anymore and finally wanting to ride for fun
Why not just stick a straight set of bars on an r1???

16t best mod🔥👍
Can I get some more info on what flash
Lol…. After that 20-40 ft wheelie I was rolling on the floor! How could anybody complain about power?! I actually don’t want too much weight and power! 150 hp is enough! Heard these bikes under 440lbs too I think!? I don’t need to go 180-200 mph!
I might be getting on for 3500.
Good luck to ya!!! I’m looking at bikes now too! My daughters are older now! So daddy got the bike bug again after 20 years lol! I see an FZ1 for $4000 right now! 2007 36,000 miles….
@@orlandojohnson5742 Did you get it? Im looking at a 2005 FZ1 with 14,500 miles and its going for $4300. Looks real nice though.
@@yuta5026got mine for 4000$ 6500 miles 2009 Fz1 been dropped on trailer once tho
Im not sure about the engine characteristic Everyone tells me it feels like a 600 (power on top, tired down low) i prefer bikes that have good low end torque already
Those people are full of shit. Ive also got a 600 hornet. The hornet feels like a bicycle next to the fz1.
@@mrboostification i understand, just rode a fz1 yesterday and it was alright
So many reviews say it lacks low down grunt.......otherwise I would buy one tomorrow. I do have a '98 1200 Bandit and love the low down pull.
This bike does lack low end power compared to other bikes. It’s not slow by any means but after owning an FZ09 & a Duke 890 I can firmly state that either one of those bikes will pull a quicker 0-60 time. There are mods that will help the midrange significantly like graves velocity stacks, & the Yoshimura full system but the FZ1 will never make solid numbers in the lower RPM range, like under 5-6k RPM. It is still a very rewarding bike to ride though, the top end pull is addicting! I’ve taken the bike on group rides and I’ve never had any trouble keeping up with other literbikes up to around 150. Due to this bike being naked I really don’t care to push it over triple digits in most cases but man it pulls like a freight train from 50-150. For every day riding at legal speeds middleweight naked bikes definitely have more to offer but I will say that the FZ1 is still a fantastic bike for 2-up riding as well as a great sport tourer.
Every bike I've owned got to do exhaust and a reflash its a must. Even the new mt09 and mt10
A great demonstration of an EXC-F on an MX track! Just wondering, after a few laps, were you wishing you were on a smaller MX 2T bike? Or perfectly happy staying on the EXC-F?
love my 06 fz1, will never sell it.
how did you reflash it?
Let down with the power? Bro this thing is a rocket my 07 fz1 scares me 😂😂😅
Ikr!!! Then he does a wheelie for about 30 plus feet! I’m rolling in the floor laughing at this guy!
@@orlandojohnson5742 3 months later and my fz1 still scares me sometimes
Cool bike and a great vid!
What are the service intervals for this bike
Legend! Honk your horn mid air next time ha ha
Just look at the finke desert race in Aus Toby price all they ride are 500’s
How noticeable is the power difference from stock vs reflashed ecu? I'm about to send mine to vcyclenut and wanted to know if it's worth it?
The difference before and after the reflash was significant. The bike runs better overall, cooler, more power, and you have full power right from first gear. I am thinking about having it reflashed again though as Ivan's Performance has a new flash out and he has been perfecting his tune for this bike for years. VCycleNut is so much better than stock but on-off throttle transitions and low speed throttle inputs feel like they could still be better
@@JGreenwood238 gotcha, i personally have have no on/off throttle snatch or issues with throttle input on my 2009 FZ1, so the Vcyclenut flash should be awesome for me? I've heard nothing but positive feedback from the Vcyclenut flash so hopefully it truly is an awesome reflash 😎🤙
@@alchemist3724 it will make a big difference for sure. It was probably the most noticable improvement I've made to the bike
@@JGreenwood238 did u get it reflashed with ivan?
Good review...Thanks for posting!
Where can I get the ecu reflash
My bike was reflashed by VCycleNut, but I’ve also heard great things about Ivan’s flash from Ivan’s performance!
Love this bike. Been off a dirt bike for 15 years and been riding my harleys. But now I’m ready to get back on dirt and dodge trees and not cars. Great video man.
I rode my uncles 500 yesterday for the first time and I was clearing 50 foot jumps
I bought a 500 xcf-w last month finally getting a trailer this weekend hopefully I can get my butt into a trail. Been a pain in the ass trying to find a harness to wire in signals so I can make it legal to ride on the road. All I want to do is ride my first bike.
The wr450f is similar in the fact that it’s street legal, can hit trails, can hit the mx park.
Boy that track looks like a ton of fun.
Love your attitude and style dude, regards from England!
Great vidio and review. Good points coming from your riding background too. Looking forward to you working with Taco and the mods you choose!
What the service intervals on these bikes.
That wheelie was G af
Its not a moto cross bike its a woods bike Hit some technical trails.. Mine eats rock gardens for breakfast.. But it does have that moto cross feel on the top end but pivot turns are controlable once you figre the bike out... I picked mine up in Feb just got it back from suspension work 2 weeks ago....
KTM needs a 500 2 stroke , come on !
it is down on power. It nrrds to be de-restricted then it hits around 55-60 hp.
that is the SHIT!!
I have a 1st gen 05 and besides the bars and exhaust this bike needed nothing.
I was going to say the PDS rocks for off-road! As in you don't have to worry about rocks or roots getting snagged from a linkage!
I love how mine does not hang I have the Molecule skid plate also so once it hits its like someone throws you over the log...
I'd try a Vortex ecu on that sweet Katoom 500 exc-f. map #2. Most definitely go up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket.
Thoughts on this bike vs a 690?
690 is lot heavier, go w this one
@@armandhammer98 hows its highway legs? Considered getting one but i dont like that itd be wailing on it to ride 65/75 regularly
@@NativeOfTheLand97 i dont have, I'm going to buy the ktm 500 xcf -w and convert it into a supermoto.
I’m 100% selling my 2018 250 SXF and getting the 350 version of this. Thanks for the reviews! Please made a video about mods, or respond to my comment with what your plans are. YES!
You pump me up!
Once you do the muffler, ecu, and tires, you will not have any need for the rm anymore. If you think the power is good now, just wait till you make those changes. There are some very offroad oriented dot approved tires.
You were right, I did the muffler, removed reeds, Athena ECU, new tires and a few other things. I ended up selling my RM250 and my YZ450 🤣
With all these mods.....the power is the same as a YZ 450?
Slavens also has stuff for it, as well as taco as you mentioned. I did not go with there ecus, got mine direct from vortex and its great. I would go with taco if you want the GET ecu. I don't know much about dyno tuning though, so was concerned about the possibility of over dyno reducing engine longevity. Not sure if thats something to worry about or not, so i played it safe and stuck with the dyno work vortex decided was best.
Put an fmf muffler and a vortex ecu on it and you will love it. Tires are a must change. I also changed 1 tooth on the front sproket. LOVE mine now. Im also in Florida. Where in Florida are you?
I bought a 500 in 2015, still have it, and from time to time I think about selling it but man it just works so well with hundreds of hours on it, rallies, rips on the weekend and a couple multi-day trips.
They are solid bikes. I always hear how unreliable they are yet I've put about 85 hours on mine so far with nothing but oil changes and air filters. I have run into one annoying problem specific to the 2020+ and that's the upper engine mounts tend to crack. I had to get mine welded but there's aftermarket options starting to come to market now.
