Wonderful recounting of celebrities who had a fondness for the grape. Considering the pressures of the film and television industry, I would anticipate there are many more in the industry with similar problems who have flown below the radar. These stories may have had the unintended consequence of bringing some solace to others outside of notoriety without fame and but with equally difficult pressures who have turned to the grape for self-medication.

What's this bollocks about WC Fields being a silent film actor? 90% of his films were talkies! My favourite Fields film clip was when he walks into a bar and asks the bar tender if he had spent a $20 bill there the night before. The barman said yes, you did. Fields then let out a sigh of relief and said, oh, thank goodness for that, I thought I'd lost it.

just about every actor who was mentioned that was an alcoholic I never cared for. I must’ve had some kind of instinct. I personally don’t drink smoke or take drugs or medication. I’m all about a healthy lifestyle.

According to Wikipedia William Holden was such a drunk that he killed himself. He was at home, alone and got so drunk that he fell and cut his head. But, he then passed out and bled to death. It's also said that director John Ford had to schedule every scene he did with John Wayne in the morning because Wayne was always drunk by noon.
