DG 61: Easy Buttonhole Spacing with a Simflex!
Forget the math! There's no need for calculations for buttonhole spacing on your garments when using a Simflex Gauge. Great sewing tools make projects faster and easier. Do less work and make more garments! (And if you bake or garden, it's a great tool for serving sizes and spacing seedlings too!)

DG 60: How to Add Side Seam Ruching to a Pattern
Просмотров 30710 месяцев назад
Adding ruching to a pattern is a GREAT way to create a garment that hides too many holiday or party eats or perhaps you'd like to hide few, curvy, areas on the midsection. Whatever the reason, ruching also creates a cute, style option for tops, dresses, and skirts. Kathy demonstrates how she adds midsection ruching to one of her existing, bodycon dresses in this video. How to enlarge a letter for a monogram
Omg thank you, thank you! You are a wonderful instructor!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it!! I made this when I was working at a dealer and did it off the clock/unpaid. Ultimately I was fired for uploading this vid to the dealer RUclips channel because (it was during the Covid year) it "would cause complaints by customers who wanted lessons on other machines" so I was forced to remove it. My big goal was always consumer education on these machines, and I disagreed with the focus of sales over education at the time, so I LOVE that it was helpful.
I’m sorry you went through that, but I’m sure you are helping many people with your videos! I have watched quite a number of them already. 🤗
What a fabulous video! The exact information I was looking for and you explain everything so well. I’m so glad I found your channel. ❤
Please!!! I need to view part 2! This saran wrap method will allow me to sew fitting garments again! I have a left shoulder joint replacement that has caused a lowering of my bust and misshapen shoulder bone structure. I have a spinal S-curve and a hematoma bulge on my left hip. I was thrown from an open vehicle and landed on my left side. This fitting method is amazing!
Yo I’m so glad I watched this before alternating my client’s bridesmaid dress give thanks❤😅
You're very welcome! I hope it helps :) .
What a fabulous and very informative tutorial!! Thank you!😊
When do thunk you will have Part 2 ready? This really looks like a great technique.
Thank you. I'm making a Pin Up Girl one piece. Haven't made a swim suit in a very long time. I am pleased with the fit, but it could have a diagram or suggestions for where to put Power Net. This was helpful.
It really is a case of trial and error. Usually I have a good idea of exactly where to place both based on my experiences. Powernet can produce a great look, but it has to be used judiciously. Glad it helped!
Just found your videos today. I will try this next time I need a designing form, for necklaces ect.. I made a duct tape dress form years ago, this is faster! If I sew for a friend I think I'll try this too.
i use a vintage key hole button whole attachment make a similar result on my old singer 319k
I have had a double mastectomy. Trying to figure out how to add pockets to swimsuits for my swim inserts so I can utilize suits I already have
Hello Pamela! I don't have experience with pockets for a mastectomy, however, I would be inclined to use powernet over powermesh and "eyeball" a pocket size and shape. Handstitching the pockets in to current swimsuits might be the best option at this point. Have you tried searching on FB for something like postmastectomy sewing? I have read about options in the past, but there is some great info in specific FB groups as well as other RUclips channels that focus on this very issue.
This was super helpful! Tky
I have a pair of cycling bib shorts that I want to sew a pocket on. The material is very similar to what a swimsuit is made from. What kind of material do you think would be best?
I have it, never used it but now I know how to use it. Thanks Kathleen.
This is great! Is there a part 2?
There will be. I had to do a major cleanout and found my original saran wrap block. Probably will be done within 2 mos because that has been on my list of things to do.
Great video! Thank you. ☺️
You're welcome!
Hi Cathy, Just got a new Luminaire sewing & embroidery machine. So looking forward to your videos.
Hi Cathy. My vids can be helpful for Lumi owners, but I strongly recommend joining the Gloria Horn FB group for Lumi specific vids using My Design Center/IQ Designer. Enjoy your new Lumi! It's a wonderful machine :) !!
Love your videos!! Total lifesaver!!! God bless!!
Thank you!
Thank you very much. Very helpful video.
You're very welcome! Hope it helps with your makes :) .
My problem is that I find with all these layers its quite hot...and I am usually using a shelf bra in summer under lightweight tops, so witha shelf bra its hotter than a standardbra
How do you keep the fabric in place? I just got a baby-beginner machine, the Brother PE535. It's actually great, but when I actually make buttonholes on a real garment, I'm going to want the buttonhole to be placed near the edge of the fabric, and I won't be able to do that keeping it in the hoop, there won't be enough space. I did make test buttonholes from designs I uploaded on my computer, and they came out beautifully-- but they were randomly in the middle of the piece of test fabric, because I was just seeing how they looked. It looks as if you just laid yours down on another piece of cloth? Or paper? How did you make this work, please? TIA.
My friend has had needle threader break more than once. I am happy to of found this video to show her that she needs to push the needle up/down button first then put the thread thru to the #7, then hit the threader button. Hurrah, yipee, waawho
Great!!!
Thank you, finally an informative demo!!!
You're welcome!
Hi, I loved this, just one qu….my underbust is so,, so much smaller than my bust…to put elastic in to the correct width means I struggle to get it over my head and shoulders…loosen the elastic and no point having it! I can’t buy rtw because of this. Any help please?!
What kind/brand of elastic are you using? Some elastics don't have good stretch. Have you checked out the elastics at Bra Makers Supply (Canada) or Sew Sassy (US)?
@@cybersewingschool874 naively I didn’t realise there were different elastics but this has just made me do a very big ahhhhhh! It explains why I’m having the same problem with elastic waisted trousers (won’t go over my hip) yet the previous identical trousers I made work perfectly…..different elastic…. Thanks! You’ve fixed both my shelf bra and trousers dilemma! Now all I need is help drawing a side seam with a huge difference between waist (small) & hips (large) ! Really appreciate you taking the time to answer
Thanks! This is my problem with several suits and many bras! There is detail in the bridge that I want to preserve on the current swim top project, and I have to hand sew or use webbing till I can replace my machine.
There is bridge lining fabric. Have you tried that? Always nice to have in the stash. It's extremely thin but very strong, and it's what is used in RTW bras. I discuss it in one of my vids on swimsuit fabrics. Do you need the link?
Gotta be careful of that power nesh, it can really take over! Vile stuff! 😂 This is a very helpful video. You explained it quite well 😊
I’ve been wanting to make this bag for awhile now but couldn’t decide on what to use for the exterior. Your grey bag is gorgeous and now I know I’m going to use faux black alligator and gold trim.
amazing smile and valid information explained ❤ thank you dear ..
Third time was a charm for me with the Sophie too. I had the same gaping at bridge and cup. I ended up reducing cup size and bridge but used same underwire and band. Size. I found the smaller cup created more stretch and thereby more support.
Glad you found your solution! Thanks for posting it. These are the comments that are sure to help others :) !
Love your vids! The troubleshooting approach is fantastic. Ty!!!!!
So for swimwear with no back, where would you attach the shelf bra? The last time I tried at all seams (neck , armscye, side seams), I got pulling at my side seams. 😅
Can you show exactly where you put partial Power Net in the bikini top?
Excellent visual! The best l’ve seen! Thank you.
Thank you! Much appreciated :) .
I'm learning so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Working on this now
You're going to love the bag!
@@cybersewingschool874 not bad for my first. Just ordered hardware for 4 more
@@jackietschantz Did you post it in any FB groups? I'd love to see it :) !
@@cybersewingschool874 no. I’ll see if I can find y’all
So how do I draft the shelf bra?
The shelf bra is drafted off the same pattern front and back. Measure from the mid shoulder point down over AND under the fullest part of the bust. Match the length at the side seams of the shelf bra with the back piece. This should give you a rough estimate. Even if a pattern includes a shelf bra piece, you may still have to customize the length to your specs.
can i put a more traditional lining over the power mesh/powernet? i want to make and sell clothes. would that be ok to do to hide the power mesh or is that too much
I always say, "You can do whatever you want :) !" Seriously though, your best judgement will dictate what to do. If I'm doing swim bottoms and using both powernet (a partial front lining) and powernet (for a full front lining), I'd leave it at that. Could I put swim lining over top? Yes, I could. It depends on the fabric, print, color (not all swim fabric is the same quality), and how neat I want the inside. But it can be overkill too. The more you sew, the easier it is to make these calls. There are no hard and fast rules on this.
Very helpful!!
"You gotta be careful . . . It's not like you wanna push on it" * laughs in trans masc designing a binder *
It can push on the tummy, not on the boobies :) !
@@cybersewingschool874 why?
@@cradicalcompassion perhaps I misunderstood your comment, but women I know want to compress the tummy but not the boobs. No "pushing" the Powernet on the boobies...it will smoosh them! Strategic placement for uplift and cleavage, but other that, no.
@@cybersewingschool874 yeah I think so lol. A chest binder is a garment designed specifically to bind (or as you said, smoosh) chest tissue to appear flatter. I'm nonbinary / transmasculine & wear binders for chest dysphoria, so uplift & cleavage is the exact opposite of why I'm learning about this fabric. I know women who wear them too though, for various reasons. I thought you were saying it *can't*/shouldn't be used for that, for some reason other than preference.
@@cradicalcompassion Yes, everyone has unique and individual needs in what they want to achieve :) . Powernet is the smoosh fabric. Smoosh wherever desired!
Where can I purchase the bobbin tension donut weight? thanks!
Call your local Babylock (or Brother) Dealer. They will be able to order one for you directly from Babylock or Brother if they don't have it in stock.
Thank you. Very good points to think about when choosing swimwear styles 🩱
Wonderful walk thru of your sewing room. Great ideas. Love all your higher up small draws not on rollers, clever use to angle your ribbons on shelves, & what a great re -purpose of your kitchen table for a built in sewing centre. 💐
Thank you so much for this vid ... very helpful. Wow you are very young looking, not at all 50+ more like 30+ ! The dress turned out wonderful. I want to add a shelf bra to some tops I'm making. My goal is to make some shelf bras for my elderly mother's under singlet, for when she wears tops over them. She is in her 80's & finds standard bras very tiring to put on. She'd prefer to not wear a bra but because of her generation & feeling immodest she continues to be frustrated.
Thank you! Shelf bras can be very freeing. And the beauty of including them is one can add as much or as little extra support as needed with cups and fabric types.
Why would you use a straight stitch on a knit? Wouldn’t the stitches pop when you wore it?
A straight stitch is amendable in specific areas on a knit. I prefer to use a straight stitch and set a custom length and width for a narrow zigzag. Using the default lightning bolt (stretch) stitch or triple stitch often is too short and stretches the seam producing waves on a seamline. If a machine has foot pressure, that can be used to compensate to some extent. The only places I would use a lightning bolt stitch is back of the armholes, the back crotch, and/or the final stitching once a garment has been basted to fit. However, I strongly prefer to use a serger for virtually all my knit garments. In the absence of a serger when creating children's clothes or bodycon garments and leggings, then the final stitching should be a custom narrow zigzag or the lightning bolt if one prefers. All in all, the lightning bolt has never been my fave stitch for knits because beginners rely on it as the best stitch, and it just depends. Also, it is a beyotch to seam rip if a mistake is made! If one does not have a serger, experience will teach the sewist judicious use of the lightning bolt stitch :) .
Seems like power net can be used for binders too?
Definitely. Power Net is the "super sucker inner" material. However, be careful when ordering. The terms Power Net and Power Mesh can get muddled. Order samples from a few places can be quite helpful to make sure one is getting exactly what they want.
it 100% is! I found this video because I have an old Underworks chest binder made of power net that doesn't fit anymore. I want to cut it up so I can use the material in something else.
