I’ve done electrical for 6 years. I work in any state I want, if I’m unemployed it’s because I want the vacation. Between side work and the demand for the trade is overwhelming… once you have the groove down then you can easily work for yourself and scratch out the employer. However… the amount of knowledge needed as well as work ethic is real… I mean god damn real…. You work in every dirty, uncomfortable, as well as tight spaces. However the independence you gain from the knowledge is a life saver.

As an auto technician turned commercial electrician I am so tired of seeing these stupid videos with stock footage showing 50% of the workforce as women - in 14 years of working in the trades I can think of two actual women that I have worked with hands on and neither of them were any good at all. 🙄

Don't let the 15-20 an hour deter you from becoming an Electrician. I will tell you now you newbies that you can work your way up and eventually Project managers and Inspectors. These can pay day rates at and you can make 200k a year (with overtime of course). There are jobs that can pay 75 an hour and it depends where you go. You will learn this once you get into the trade and make your way up and establish a good career network. You get into the commissioning portion with a major corporation and work overseas you can easily make 300+ a year. Establish good work ethic and you will never be out of a job. Always learn on your personal time. Don't be one of those people that only allow themselves to learn what the company provides because you will always have to make self investment. This is coming from someone with 17 years in the industrial industry.

The reason I'm watching this video is I helped a guy with the wiring of his shop, and I somewhat enjoyed wiring up all the electrical outlets. What I didn't like though was not having a map of the circuits and constantly trying to figure out where each wire went and what circuit it was on. I get confused with really complex problems so the problem-solving part of this job might be difficult for me. Does anyone with experience have any thoughts on how you can know if you want to be an an electrician?

Don't go into service work if you don't like troubleshooting. Focus on new construction or industrial.
