Small Boat Big Ocean TV
США
Добавлен 6 мар 2018
Welcome to Small Boat Big Ocean TV series! dedicated to mid-Atlantic saltwater fishing. We are your average, every day fishermen. We fish on the 25-ft Howie T. Our vessel is 2000 Cape Horn 24OS center console powered by twin Suzuki 175 four-stroke engines.
We only use tackle and gear that gets the job done and doesn't break the bank. We will show you exactly what gear we use and why. We don't have huge budgets and large boats so we fish when the weather and seas allow.
We don't claim to know everything about the saltwater game so in this series you'll get to learn right along side of us. You'll see our successes and failures.
Simply put, we are guys in a SMALL BOAT on a BIG OCEAN using what gear we can afford to catch whatever Mother Ocean has to offer.
We hope you enjoy this series and PLEASE SUBSCRIBE if you like what you see!

Episode 3 - Trolling for Spanish Mackerel
How far offshore?
We were 32 miles out, near the Resor.
What what rod and reels
We use cabela's depth master 50 reels and Diawa Sealine 20-50 6'6 rods
How far offshore did u get the tuna chunking? 40+ miles?
We were 55 miles out near, the AP
Great video, please help me. So where do you set up or know where to go to set up?
The best thing we can suggest is to watch for water temps in the 70s that create a temp break along a contour line. The 180 ft (30 fathom) line is a great place to start.
Awesome, I’ll look for you next season
Definitely! Always looking for a buddy boat when we run out to 30 fathoms plus.
Nice trip Capt! Was the lagoon in Waretown? I'm in Forked River.
Thanks Mike! We are in Lanoka Harbor, just north of you!
Stumbled across your videos and thought the boat looked familiar.. I’m your slip neighbor! 23cs ultra
Very cool! Did you get in on that bluefin bite? We are headed for sea bass as soon as the weather improves
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 2 Sundays ago we where absolutely surrounded at the Barnegat ridge and just couldn't hook up. I took advantage of the weather and pulled the boat to get some maintenance in and ill be back out as much as possible this week to hit the sea bass
Nice catch and trip. Seaside lumps?
Thanks for the compliment! We were about a mile south of there. Tried to stay away from the fleet, as much as possible.
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 it worked for you, good call!!
Awesome video man. Good to see you get in on that NJ BFT bite and love the technical comments throughout
Thank you for the comment and for watching! Makes us very happy that you enjoyed it!!
Nice, fun trip. The quality of the video was poor and distorted. Thumbs up
Thanks for the comment. The HD version has not been processed by RUclips. The only resolution viewable now is 480p. 1080p HD should be processed soon.
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 good to know. I could only view in 360 mode
Nice video, but the background music kills it, not just this song but all of it, especially on loop...... would be neat to hear the experience and see it..... otherwise love the channel
@@AdmiralGlascock Thank you for the comment! We are working with new editing software so we are still refining the backing track levels. Episode 3 should be better. Thanks again!
I enjoy your videos, keep them coming 👍
Thank you very much! So glad that you are enjoying them!
Great Job! Looked like a fun day!
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed the episode!
Was that a Henriques?
To be honest, I'm not really sure what make it was.
Fun day, nice job!
Thanks for the comment! Glad to liked it!
Boat looks great! I just stumbled onto your channel. I live down here in Pensacola where your boat was manufactured. I like the format of your videos all though I’ve only watched two so far.
Thanks for tuning in! Glad you're enjoying the episodes!
When you guys approach the pot and fish do you keep motors idling or do you kill it?
Thanks for the question! We will turn off the engines for a couple drifts past the buoy. Then, leave them idle as fish typically become used to them.
Great video! What lb. leader were you using for those mahi?
Thanks!! We were using 15 lb fluoro.
Nice work!
I'm going to tell you 100% to troll around the pots to locate those fish 1st. You'll spook more fish then you see. Until a mahi is hooked they are very selective. Once you hook one then it's a free for all. Just pulling up and throwing chunks does not mimic anything that occurs out there that is why you struggle. Troll the pot hook up then chunk. And throw those minis back please. In 2 weeks they will be 3xs that size. I fish out of AC sand not only will you catch more fish but you will hook into a bunch of other stuff like tuna and wahoo. You may have seen my 52lb wahoo this year that I got in my 16ft boat. I run 40 miles offshore regularly.
What are pots? It's this a NJ thing?
@@wazup3333 trap bouys. We call all of them lobster pots. Usually sea bass or conch or lobster. They place the traps around shipwrecks and hard bottom areas. Off NJ it's basically a desert out to 60 miles. The only thing is wrecks, no coral or stone. So most fishing is centered around a piece of structure. The pots attract bait. It's a place to hide. Then the bigger fish hang around to pick them off. I'm summer the mahi will be usually within 50 yards of the pot. Allot of people will run up on pot and throw cut bait. It's a waste of time. Mahi are predators. They want to chase and catch their meal. If you troll post with ballyhoo they will mangle it. Then you chunk to keep them around your boat. "Hopping" spooks more fish then you catch and if they don't spook then they definitely ain't eating. Troll till you find them on a pot and hook one. Then chunk
@@mulletoutdooradventures6286 I don't think we have those traps on long island. It also desert until you get to the canyons , do "submarine cables" on the navionics charts hold fish? I see no recks or structure south of fire island inlet and getting to canyons is far
@@wazup3333 you'll see traps up there. And you'll find bluefin anywhere from the beach to canyon. I've gotten them 2 miles off AC. Anything on bottom is better then sand. You'll find pots is you try blind trolling. It's inevitable. I found 20 last weekend just trolling around. I try to tell people you can't catch it you're not fishing. On some days I put my trolling spread out just out the inlet.
@@mulletoutdooradventures6286 what kind of line do you use? I've heard tuna are very like shy and to use 30lb? But on trolling lures/ spreads you got to use 100lb mono?
What size tlds are those?
Sorry Micky, wrong video. Those are Penn Squall 30ld.
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028what's the fleet?
Fun time. How far back did you set the lines?
Hi Mike, we run the outside rods back about 70 ft and the transom rods back 45 ft. We use Cabela's Depth Master reels so we can keep track of amount of line out.
Thank you!!
@@Mike-hs8fq Anytime. With the #1 planers, boat speed also plays into how deep the planer will run, which is around 15-17 ft. We were trolling at 5mph so 70 ft out was only to keep the outside planers from tangling. You could get 15 ft down with 50-60 ft.
I had so much fun! Thank you for inviting me on your boat!
You are most welcome anytime!!! Gald you all had a fun time!
That’s a nice way to spend the day when the ocean is not cooperating 👍

@@muddy1791 we clever like that!
Do you guys ever try anchoring up over the wreck? I was on a reef this weekend and got a 4 man limit anchored up
Great question! Yes, we do anchor over wrecks but I forgot the wreck anchor and wasn't too familiar with this wreck so I opted to not drop the fortress anchor.
W crew and W captain
Yessir!
Damn thank goodness that bleep didn't run into you , and really appreciate your your video on how we should all have awareness 👍 thanks bro
Thanks you the comments! Gotta be on constant lookout when out there.
Great trip, and great episodes! What Reels are you using? Looks like Penn Squall VSW's?
Thank you!! Yes indeed! We use 3 30VSW and 2 50VSW reels!
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 Thanks. I currently have a set of Shimano TLD 25s and I was debating also getting a set of the larger TLD 50s. Do you recommend the Penn VSW 50s over the TLDs?
@@gcogs2296 I can't honestly comment about the TLD series as I haven't used them. Having said that, they are very popular for a reason because Shimano makes great gear. We have been using VSWs for several seasons now and they have greatly exceeded my expectations so I can truly recommend them. Hope this helps!
Enjoyed ur video…started fishing on a 22’ mako out of Townsends Inlet as a kid and the Seaisle Lump and the Avalon shoal where our go to spots
Thanks Andy! Happy to hear that you are enjoying it. We will be slipping in Waretown this summer.
Great content!
Thank you for putting this together.
It is our pleasure. We are very glad that you are enjoying the channel!
Great, thanks for posting. Try casting behind the hooked mahi. They follow the hooked fish and you can usually double up.
Thanks for the tip! We will certainly give that a go next summer!
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 thats what is tough up here tough fishing winter. Hopefully you guys get out and make a taug episode.
@@darenleeper1644 We have a tautog run planned. Hopefully we can get out and get some good video from it!
Nice job. Bluefins to seabass nice save. You said an artifical reef at 30 miles out. I didnt realize they made them out that far. What boat are you in? Thank you for posting this
Thank you for the comment!! We fish on a 2000 Cape Horn 24 offshore with twin 175 zukes.
Just last month on two boats collided in the Baltimore - killing one person. No word on why it happened yet. Every time I go on a run and engage the auto pilot 9/10 times I end up having to divert course because something is in my way - be it another ship, lobster pot or weather buoy. Always have to stay alert and no matter. Glad you are all ok
Thank you, Ken! So are absolutely correct, have to be alert at all times!
Sorry.. I'd pull the lines and follow him back to the dock and beat him senseless They'll sell a boat to anyone. Gotta be constantly aware of your surroundings.
Turn off the clicker!
Glad to see no close calls this time! -Tight lines 😎

Thanks!
What boat do you have?
We now have a 00 Cape Horn 24os. The boat used in that video was a pro-line 20 Sport
Glad you guys are ok. He should be fined for that. Incredible stupidity
Thank you!!
Neither boat had a horn I guess?
There is no way that sporty was going to hear my horn with how fast he was going.
Wow, that was way too close! Dangerous!
Great trip! I know that feeling you were describing when catching your own Tuna!
Why wouldn't you take any evasive action once you noticed them coming? He was 100000% in the wrong but you were more worried about yelling at him than preventing a collision.
We did prevent a collision. I took the boat out of gear and had another vessel trolling on my starboard so I could not alter any more than I did.
Good video. Our secret weapon pot hopping is using our Minn Kota I-Pilot to "anchor" on the up drift side of the pot. Spot lock casting distance away with stern at the pot and fish for however long the fishing on that pot lasts. Overall, squid seems to be the Mahi candy for us.
That is a a great tool for pot hopping for sure! I saw a boat with it yesterday a d it was so cool to see them just hang there!!
just seems like there is more and more of these morons out there... dont have to go offshore to find them
Did you get name of vessel and hailing port? I would report to the USCG
I didn't see the boat name but did speak to Manasquan Coast Guard today and they believe they have the boat identified.
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 Great. Registration visible on the vid?
@@thomasmcgee3286 unfortunately not. I went frame by frame and could not find the reg # on the boat
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 Oh that sucks
@@smallboatbigoceantv2028 i'd have cleared my set and chased that fucker down. those sporties think they own the place well on a flat calm day like that a CC with twin outboards u will catch him in no time to get his name and tag or at least fire an 8 oz sinker thru a salon window. fuck those assholes
Sheesh - scary - always have to be on point.
Been there one too many times… usually credit card boaters that think they own it all, and dont usually care to think about how they affect smaller boats
