«Arbonne»! 🙌Love the Journey of Blaise, and the Villa Scene with Blaise and Rudel is heartbreaking! Cheers!
@@MacScarfield deniftely a good book!
Lackey is from Oklahoma, a place where seperaition of church and state is more of a suggestion then a rule, her cynicism of preachers mixed up with politics is to be expected.😅
@@seandarbe2521 be that as it may, still a lazy fantasy trope common to the time
I did send you this one, didn't I? I *LOVE* this book & author! I', also a huge fan of many of her other DAW titles!
@@jerryfiore5818 yes, I’m pretty sure! This is the only one of her DAW books I have though.
Very intriguing! After Electric Forest I'm VERY curious to try more Tanith Lee, especially since she has a lot of fantasy. Wild ending sounds about right lol. Really interesting discussion on their one, sounds like a very interesting debut!
@@nikosbookreviews I’d like to read her Flat Earth books, though I should try her sci-fi too.
Yes! Tanith Lee! The Birthgrave is raw in some parts, but it is bizarre, fascinating, and mesmerizing.
@@StakesofPurgatory definitely some apt description
Slow reading for me as well. Need to spend some time on The Knight. 😬😅 -T
@@AnEruditeAdventure I may actually start The Wizard soon. You can do it!
I managed to grab a copy of this earlier this year, for about 50 bucks. It's so nice to see a review for this because it is very obscure despite Quinn's other more prominent works. Thanks for the review :)
Hey Liam! I don't recall if that's a title I'd sent? @OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels is correct - it's very akin to the "Heralds of Valdemar". Many of Mercedes Lackey's series are formulaic - regardless of when they were written or with whom. "The Last Herald Mage Trilogy" was my intro to her work, and while I love her stuff, there is a lot of samey-ness. Mercedes Lackey is an LGBTq advocate, but *doesn't* make the subject matter overbearing.
@@jerryfiore5818 I don’t think you sent any Lackey. Could be forgetting though. I heard about the representation in Herald Mage, though I hear that one is a bit melancholy. I don’t think I’ll rush to read more Lackey but I’m open.
It sounds generic enough for Mercedes Lackey that I think I'll have to skip this one. From what you describe here I recognize all the same building blocks from Heralds of Valdemar. Great breakdown!
@@OnlyTheBestFantasyNovels I’d like to try that series. It’s fun, but rather straightforward.
I've been curious to see you read this one since it felt closer to S&S (from my point of view anyway, sounds like not so much the case lol) but I will say this one is VERY different from all her other works
@@nikosbookreviews definitely hits heroic fantasy. The 90s are infamous as a decade of very little s&s. I’ll have to read more by Wurts, I still have To Ride Hell’s Chasm
@@LiamsLyceum _To Ride Hell’s Chasm_ is highly revered. Janny Wurts is a prose master.
I appreciate your thoughts here, Liam, as this one's on my shelf and I haven't heard anyone talk about it!
@@RedFuryBooks 🫡 thanks for watching!
It was a slow reading week for me. I also wish I could pick some discipline I want to dedicate myself to because I switch it up all of the time and all of the ones I land on I wouldn't mind but I guess I'm too wishy-washy. I currently am thinking of focusing more on religious studies, especially the BoM of course because those are the "best books". Might have the most eternal value and I can read or study other things here or there. We'll see!
@@SeaninsShelf 🧠 we’ll figure it out

@@SeaninsShelf always running for me
Wolfe is without doubt my favorite speculative fiction author and I have been reading sci-fi for over sixty (60) years. Reading the Latros novel, and especially the Urth Series feels like entering a dream state.
If you like the Amber Series by Zelazny, then you should read the World of Tiers series by Philip Jose Farmer.
37 is pretty ancient
@@SeaninsShelf 👴
Grew up with these books. Of all the cities of Faërun, I feel a strong kinship with the people of Phlan. To this day, I still remember the passage where the demon had taken the shape of a bard to lure the people to their doom and everyone followed him. But when the procession arrived at the gates of Phlan, Tarl Desanea stood between them and the closed doors and made clear that no one would cross them. Very powerful and evocative writing imo.
@@Stephen64138 that’s awesome. Forgotten Realms in general is a second home to me. It’s why I decided to challenge myself to read all the books because it feels less like punishment and I enjoy it. So many places in particular to love, glad you found Phlan.
@@LiamsLyceum Tbh I didn't read that many of them. I'm french and I grew up reading their traductions of course. And even if we had editors who did a decent job, we had access to only a fraction of them and often only in pocket books that were shortened and with a lazy traduction sometimes. But still, it's my childhood. I got the pleasure of rediscovering them in their original format later on.
How do you read so many books so fast dayum
👍🏼
They should never have tried to stretch this out into a trilogy.
@@astormofwrenches5555 It definitely works better as the single book. Probably too much of a preconception that fantasy works best in trilogies which isn’t true.

Just realizing how far behind I am on your videos. 😅 -T
When you're done with Eaters of the Dead, you need to watch The 13th Warrior, if you haven't yet.
@@AccipiterF1 I still need to watch it, it’s on the list. Soon
I've just revisited this old favourite as well. I really enjoyed EC's take on the central conflict - in another author's hands, the noble savages trope would surely have felt stale, but here it somehow works, and the humans aren't really demonised either. The fortuitous appearance of Arilyn's ancestor seemed a bit too contrived, though. Also, maybe it's just me but I can't make out at all what you're saying about "eldritch" around 3:33.
She definitely does manage the noble savage thing we’ll here. Thanks for stopping by, I only have to read Dream Spheres for this series and then it’ll be on to more by Cunningham. Thornhold review forthcoming. Sorry about. 3:33 “The word eldritch is used a notable amount which I found surprising.”
This seems written for today!

Well done without spoilers. I read a lot of Harrison as a kid, stuff like his "Stainless Steel Rat" series and his a bit more serious "Deathworld" series. He is big on action and comedy. SSR is very comedic and over the top.
@@leefranklin3054 my pal Jerry gifted me with lots of Harrison so I’ll be getting to more. SSR is high in my desires.
@@LiamsLyceum Quick fun read. Enjoy, hope you review them.
Who is this Timaeus guy and what fool would ever have him in a livestream book discussion? My word!
@@OliverBrackenbury definitely a risk, his brain is so large it makes the rest of us look like we belong on the ship of fools.
14:08 It's true. You really have to read Nine Princes of Amber to get a feel for the world Zelazny created. Incidentally, that led me to reading my favorite yearly Halloween re-read, A Night in the Lonesome October. Which is not Swords and Sorcery at all, but it's a very charming dark fantasy tale about eldritch powers, those who aid them, and those who fight against them. And it's told by a dog. Lots of fun.
This is the best example of what happens when writer(s) who know what they're doing use Norse mythology and viking culture. Lots of leeway to work with, but I've always loved the way they brought Norse paganism to life in a way that was totally believable. A big influence on me and my series. It's been so long since I read it though-I wonder what the scene is you're thinking of as reminiscent of Burden to Bear!
@@gregoryamato8693 I’ve heard these books influenced Asatru. And it was a certain scene with a vision in a hall with special figures. 👀
@@LiamsLyceum I don't recall the specific scene, but I suspect it stayed with my subconscious to influence what I wrote.
I picked this up at Half Price a while ago. Not sure why - if it was the description or saw it referenced somewhere. Havent reas it yet as I think it is part of a series? Read a lot of Harrison a long time ago. Bill the Galactic Space hero is similar to Phules Company and kind of silly. Stainless Steel Rat series is kind of a heist, I think. West of Eden is about the dinosaurs evolved too and are the dominant species who bioengineer everything. I think they were dect reads but it was probably 30 years ago before high school.
