- Racking stress occurs when a ship rolls in a seaway, causing the ship's side to become deformed.
- This deformation is a result of lateral movement of the deck relative to the bottom structure, leading to vertical movement of the side shells relative to each other.
- Racking stress is more prominent on the corners of the ship due to wave action on the hull.
- To reduce racking stresses, beam knees and tank side brackets are fitted.
- The most effective way to resist racking stress is by fitting transverse bulkheads.

WE CAN USE TANKSCOPE IN INERT ATMOSPHERE WHEREAS WE CAN NOT USE EXPLOSIMETER IN INERT CONDITION .
