Exploring Whiskey
США
Добавлен 12 июн 2020
We review ALL kinds of whiskey: Bourbon, Rye, Scotch, Irish, Asian and anywhere else in the world releasing whiskey. We also explore whiskey through whiskey cocktails and discussing whiskies from our club meetings and attending festivals when possible.
We will be sharing background notes; whiskey specifics; our initial thoughts on nose, palate & finish; as well as discuss pricing and availability...at least in our experience.
We are NOT whiskey experts...we don't distill or judge at competitions! We are interested in sampling everything that whiskey can be, learning about the historical backgrounds and legal requirements for various types.
We try to post two episodes a week. If you are just getting into whiskey or are looking for ideas to expand your collection...Swipe that like, click the subscribe button and turn on notifications to take this journey with us!!!

Port Infused Whiskey - Whiskey War Midnight Cask
Today we review the forth and last in a lineup from Ohio base High Bank Distillery Co - this is the Whiskey War Midnight Cask Barrel Proof!!! During some travel, Eric found himself just outside of Columbus, OH in New Albany and while there he found High Bank Distillery. He was able to grab a few different bottles from there in smaller bottles as a sampler pack. The distillery and bourbon are named after historical events from the area and has won awards for their whiskey, cocktails and food! This is a blend of straight whiskies and port wine!! interesting idea and we were super happy to sample it but would not be interested in purchasing a whole bottle of it. Cheers!

Log Still Distillery is probably better known for their Monk's Road line of bourbon and gin but they also have the Rattle & Snap line of TN Whiskey that is source out of Columbia, TN and goes through the Lincoln County process of charcoal filtering. Today we review another Scotch that comes from the same distillery that was named Whisky Advocate's Best Whisky of 2023...the Glenglassaugh Revival!!! The distillery was founded in 1875 but closed for a while. After being bought by the Scaent Group in 2008, when they first got to release new whisky, this was one of the three. Fall in Love with This Rye Cocktail - The Spiced Fall Enzoni
Просмотров 2421 день назад
The Spiced Fall Enzoni is a modification of a number of cocktails that lead back to the Negroni! Richard Boccato created the Spiced Fall Enzoni cocktail around 2012-2013 at his Dutch Kills bar in Long Island, NY. That is a variation of the original Enzoni cocktail, which was invented by Vincenzo Errico. This is a great transition cocktail with some of the sweet fruit notes of summer mixed with ...

Our Look at Still Austin Bottled-in-Bond Blue Corn Bourbon
Might be good for an evening Old Fashioned.
this is some grassy rye. I like it, but it's NOT going to appeal to non-rye drinkers.
Good video! Always appreciate the head-to-heads from consecutive years' releases. Already have '23 and might look for '24 based on your comments/results. While this is Master's Collection, you may want to indicate it's the 'Batch Proof' comparisons. What I've heard called "Master's Collection"-only is the Finishing Series, '23 - Sonoma Triple Finish & '24 - Madeira Cask Finish. Would be another great video if you can get your hands on them.
I think the 2024 is a for sure grab!! Good point in the naming, it all does get a little confusing when they use the same names for very different product lines. We will keep an eye out for the finished versions. Cheers!
The other of the 3 discontinued expressions is Torfa, their smokey/peaty whisky, and my favorite. I started with Evolution and I just think it is soooo good. A bottle that is pretty close to Evolution is Baldnoch Vinaya. And Vinaya has not been duscontinued, as far as I know. Thanks for your content. Cheers! 0:01
Yes that is the name, could not pull that out of my head!! Would love to try a peated version of their whisky! We really enjoyed Evolution and honestly think it's a little better then the Sandend!! We will have to keep an eye out for the Baldnoch Vinaja, thanks for the recommendation! Also, Thank you for the donation to our St Jude Fundraiser!!
I spelled Bladnoch wrong. It is Bladnoch, not Baldnoch. I switch letters and numbers all too often. I have an extra bottle of Torfa that I would be willing to trade.
Really nice video. Remember that blinds are the great equalizer, you just never know. Cheers!
We have had a lot of interesting outcomes in the numbers of blinds that we have done. Cheers!!
Thanks for the R&D. Check out Little Brothers in Flemington NJ next time you're in NJ.
That's not really close to the areas I generally visit BUT if I take the trip up to the Trader Joe's in Princeton like Rubberduck recommended Flemington is only a little further north.
If you're up for a short road trip, maybe check out Trader Joe's in Princeton. They have a surprisingly tasty (for the $$$ ~17/bottle) Bourbon & also a Tennessee whiskey. Costco in Christiana Mall near Wilmington is probably closer. Their Kirkland Tequila Anejo is tasty & nicely priced. I visit both locations coming from pee-ay (Lehigh Valley).
Do all of the Trader Joe's carry the whiskey, I think there is a store in Cherry Hill or Marlton? I will be close to that area at the end of October.
@@ExploringWhiskey Unfortunately, no. Just Westfield (near Newark) & Princeton (just above Trenton). Stupid? Yep. Frustrating? Completely!!!
I live at the Jersey shore and there are a few good stores where you can find most anything that comes to Jersey. Unfortunately there are way too many museum stores especially near the main roads.
That is my quick run when visiting my in-laws. Any other recommendations around the Tuckerton area? Open to heading south or west if they are good spots.
Its a pass for me
It's fine but there are many better bottles at the same price
14:52
Got to share the outtakes!!
Has been one my Thursday night go too…I like it… $70? I’m getting it for $55…and I live in Ozc CA nothings ever cheaper here haha
It's such a great pour and now we have tried so many other releases from them that are great. Wish we could find it for $55!!!
Have you tried the 2 reserve bourbons from Nelson Green Brier's? What are your thoughts?
The 2024 is pretty good. I got 2 back up bottles.
We agree, it is good but the pricing seems off for what you get in the bottle.
I believe Michter's have used the Chiquapin oak finishing since 2019. I have the 2022 and it states Chiquapin as well. I am not sure the total bottle run is 2500 and change, but each batch seems to be 2500 and change, I don't know how many batches they produce each year. My 2022 batch # is 140 and the one on the website for 2022 is 145, that gap alone suggests at least 15,000 bottles.
Good catch. We interpreted the info wrong...thought it was an annual release of around 2500 bottles but there are multiple releases each year of around 2500 bottles. Thanks for the comment!!
Have you ever bought a bottle that didn't quite live up to expectations?
What are some of your favorite ryes??
Oooh, now this is a cocktail I can get behind!
Yeah this really is a great summer cocktail!!
Great review guys. I just picked up a batch 18 and was hoping it would be better than the batch 2. Check out the Okolehao, Hawaiian moonshine. Unique flavor.
The next time one of us makes it back to Hawaii we will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!!
@@ExploringWhiskey I just tried the batch 18 tonight and found it pleasantly delicious. My friend loved it because he got a fruit flavor and didn’t taste any harsh alcohol.
The only review on this version of the bottle. I liked the Honey cask. Researching to decide if I’ll like this one.
It is a really interesting release from them, not the standard sweetness that most of their finishes have but really enjoyable. Hope to review helped you one way or the other! Cheers!!
interesting, i' m going to Peru soon.
See the original comment from one of the founders of the distillery. I'm sure you could reach out to schedule a tour! Cheers!!
Just helping with the algorithm
Thank you for the bump!!
Good that you guys also add a coupe of drops of water and talk about it. Most other RUclipsrs don't do that. So good on you guy.
Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad and sometimes it doesn’t matter BUT fun to see what happens!!
Great review
It’s really good rye!!
Have you ever been able to try any of the BTAC? How much over SRP are you willing to pay for hard to find bottles??
War Eagle.
What??
Bardstown Discovery 11 is great juice. Cannot wait for Discovery 12 this fall. 🤘🏻🥃
It really is good! Should be reviewing 12 soon!!
Sadly, cannot find this on PA's State Store website. Maybe I run across to Phillipsburg, NJ & see if they do...
We think it is worth the trip, super unique.
So...to me there's 2 things in play here. First, anyone drinking scotch should try Lagavulin 16. It's a fundamental kind of thing...like Twinkle twinkle little star or your A, B, Cs. Now...whether you ever go back for it again or have it a part of your bar going forward...that's to each their own. Second, the creator here seems (my impression) to have come in with super high expectations. Any time your expectations are that high, it's super difficult for any whiskey to meet it. Go into buying Lagavulin 16 (or any other whiskey) with moderate to average expectations. Let it surprise you (or not). Let it paint the picture. Let it tell the story. Any time you go into with such strong pre-conceived ideas...the more difficult it will be for whatever your drinking to live up to it.
You are 100% correct that I had high expectations. I've had other expression from them that I loved and so many other great Islay whiskies. This was always kind of the gold standard of Islay's but it really didn't hold up to that but the pricing sure seems like it should!!! A LOT of whiskies have excited me since starting this channel, many have lived up to or exceeded my expectations...this is not one of them.
Delicious but overpriced now. Ardbeg 10 is at least as good for less money (but still not cheap).
Agree that Ardbeg 10 is as good or better for a better price!!!
It is nice that you support the new kid on the craft block. Unless you can taste the spirit, or at least see a review by someone that you know their palete, there is the chance you might not like it. For a port finished rye, have you tried Milam & Greene? A very nice rye. I enjoy your willingness to take the less traveled path. Cheers!
We have not tried the Milam & Greene port finished but really liked their unabridged Vol 1. Have to keep an eye out. We are always trying to find local whiskies when we travel, life is about experiencing new things! Cheers!!
Interesting thing I learned recently is that bushmills and Irish distillers swap whiskey, so all the Bushmills Grain is made in Midleton, and all the "Midleton" malts (including this) are from Bushmills, except for the new malts coming out of the Method & Madness distillery
Didn't know they swapped but good to know, thanks!!
While it didn't match your palates, still a fun experiment, and bad news about the end of balcones baby blue and bourbons! Less diverse products is never good for the end consumer!
Yeah, really enjoying the different experiments that Still Austin is doing, but no it did not work for us. Very bummed about the change at Balcones.
So price wise wheelers?
The honey finished bourbon from Wheelers is about $80
It's not close Pappy
I can think of a lot of different things that are better
It not good
It's good but not even close to the best of the year.
Hey Guys. I'm Les Drent, the owner. Thanks for the video! Appreciate the honest review. I just released our first 5 year (53 gallon barrel) bourbon and I'd love to get your thoughts. We can ship to 43 states now. It's actually the same farm, same vintage of the one you tasted. I should also say that we started in 5, 10, 15, 30 and 53 gallon barrels to compare, so it's been a process growing up. We're now in all 53 gallon barrels after a long 7 year journey to get started. Let me know if I can get you a bottle as I'd value your feedback after 5 years. Cheers! Les
Sounds like things have really changed over the years!! Thanks for watching the video. I am sure 5 years in a larger barrel has really changed the final product. We would love to try the new release but we live in TN which I am guessing is one of the 7 states you can't ship to. We do have family in New Jersey or Ohio, if those work. Cheers!
@@ExploringWhiskey, I wonder why my last two attempts to reply didn’t go through. Maybe because I referenced an email or web site? Can you contact me through the bottle info? Let’s see if that works.
Will do.
Nice review. Reviewing unknown distilleries is something that more RUclipsrs should do, imo. While not a bourbon, New Holland (Michigan) Zeppelin Bend is a very good ASM. New Holland does have bourbon and rye, but I have not tried them. Cheers!
We love ASM, so we'll have to get Russ to keep an eye out the next time he is in Michigan. We love trying to find regional whiskies to try on the show. Cheers!
🤢
Not a fan, I take it?
Naw it taste weird I felt like I was drinking some vodka lol
Not bad? It’s not the best single malt from India IMO but it seems to be popular! I found it quite weak and a bit disappointing. Great video!
Yeah, it's good for a newer whisky from India. Amrut has some better expressions, but we feel this has potential to get to that level. Thanks for watching!!
@@ExploringWhiskey Yes!!
Great video! I did something similar a while back with whiskeys from the same cask, and the difference was really noticeable! also, yes to MALORT!! (Maybe for April Fool's)
Just crazy how big the difference is between the two bottles. Really don't like the Malort idea!!!
Watermelon, basil and bourbon... seems like it might not work on paper, but it came together nicely!
It really did, then was surprised how the black pepper played in as well.
I just received a bottle as a gift and I found your review helpful on figuring it out.
Really good TN whiskey, hope you enjoyed!
@@ExploringWhiskey I liked it best as an old-fashioned but my friend liked it neat.
I always hear whisky-tubers say don’t judge a whisky by the neck pour and to let your bottles open up with air for some time and revisit them later but I can’t remember seeing a blind experiment to prove it before. This was really cool. Well done, guys.
Yeah I know there is an impact BUT this was so much more than I expected. Such a fun blind experience!!
Very nice. I think you are on to something. I have a bottle of Barrell Batch 32 that was quite good when I cracked it. After the bottle was half way finished over a period of several months, I had a pour last week and Holy s**t was it so much better. So much so, I purchased a second bottle. Thanks for some interesting reviews and blinds. Cheers!
You always hear about "neck pour" and I felt that there had to be some truth BUT the difference between these two bottles was way more than I would have ever expected! Thanks for watching!!
I am the blender. I do my honey different than most! I barrel age the honey first and dump it out. So whatever is left in the wood is all the honey you get. When bottling, we don't filter it. So bottles first on the line will have left honey than the end.
Now that sounds like a fun experiment - an earlier bottle versus a later from the same line. Thanks for the info. Love what Shortbarrel puts out and looking forward to trying some of your new Old Forth whiskies!!
I've been enjoying my 750ml bottle. Geo. Dickel barrels? That's strange, considering that this distillery is owned by Brown-Forman (Jack Daniel's).
They own them know but maybe not when this version was barreled.
Really nice review. While this is discontiued, it is very, very good. So good that I have 2 backups. In my opinion, the discontinued Torfa is even better. A slightly smokey expression that has notes of salted caramel along with the smoke. I admit I went crazy and bought 7 backups. Well, it is discontinued. I really like the Torfa expression. It is amusing that all three of the new core expressions, scored lower than the 3 they replaced according to Distiller. Thanks on reviewing this scotch. Cheers!
Crazy that they stop making such great whisky!! Wish we knew earlier how good all of them are...we would have bought backups as well!!!
I got luck and picked up one from a local shop here in Hawaii for 98 bucks. nice review guys thanks for sharing
It is for sure one of the better rye's out there right now!!
I purchase the Costco 12 year and pour it into the base blended bottle since the base bottle is easier to pour.
Now that is thinking!!
A decanter is great for these weird size bottles.
Just tasted it with you, I get leather, pepper, and tobacco.... so fkn good!!!
It really is. Crazy quality coming from Alabama, really want to make it down to visit the distillery.
