I’m not a native English speaker. I have been immersed in English video games since I was young and I’m pretty sure that I have learned many expressions from my digital life. Now I talk fine on discord servers but I don’t think I can understand every conversation on discord. Also, I find that I’m a little bit limited as I only learn digital-life-related expressions from video games. I am lack of speaking practice too.

Funny thing to me was my journey of learning English. As a kid I would just watch some videos in English, not understanding a single thing that is said on screen. The only words I knew by that point were the basic things like 'cat', 'dog' and etc. Then one day I discover Roblox (yeah yeah, it's a kid's game, whatever) and then realise that I can actually play it. So what did I do? I played an RP game. So here I am, a kid that doesn't even know how to form a sentence in English, playing a game that solely relies on communication skills. Each word that was said on screen I tried to understand and write down to translate. So, doing that over the years, studying at school and watching more different videos in English led to me right now, not even needing to study to pass English lessons. I'm quite proud to say that i feel like I'm fluent in English mostly because I watched funny videos on RUclips and played Roblox.

I'm from Brazil, i play games on english since i was 6 years old because they were the only option, since the majority of the games didn't have the Portuguese option on Languages. 11 years later, i now talk with friends that speak english and they can understand everything i say (i can understand what they say too). So, basically, i can confirm this works. My suggestion for people that are trying to learn new languages is just to know what the word means, without trying to remember the exact word in the language you speak. It will make the proccess a bit quicker (only problem i find with this method is that i take a bit to translate a word to other people.)

In vrc I made a Japanese friend who barely spoke English so whenever we talk or hang out we help and correct each other. We watched sub titled anime together too so I can work on listening to Japanese and he can work on reading English

i born in brazil and learned the portuguese (i dont know why i said all that because i still on brazil '-') when i was younger everything for me was roblox,roblox and more roblox, and a big part of the games was on english, the ones with portuguese traduction it was very bad, being harder than english, even i dont understanding, and my friend (a brazilian friend) that i made on the game got much english friends (he was using they vip server, robux etc. but okay, i liked a big part of them) so i started talkin with her traducting the things on google, and, idk how i learned english very fast, i trying learn japanese with that same way, but in other games, because that friends lose her pc or stopped suddenly of playing and became boring the game, not saying the toxic comunitty thanks for reading here, i locked you for a time, good learning and sorry for the big text :)

changing the language on your phone should only be done when you have a solid vocab. Otherwise you will just lock yourself out of everything and get frustrated.

Honestly, that is the most common way to learn language in digital era. I'm not a native speaker but I played Minecraft in my childhood a lot, and that alone helped me learn how to read and write, it's kinda like magic if you ask me. But glad more people are doing so.
