Ditch Chicken Adventures
США
Добавлен 8 авг 2012
Who are we? Well we are a group of old farts who love adventure! From hiking to camping or where ever the life takes us, we love to go explore. We love our state and the rich history behind what has made Northern Maine unique. You will see most of our adventures take take place from north of Bangor (yes there is life beyond Stephen Kings hometown)! Plus you may get some cute videos of our cats as well. So what is a Ditch Chicken you might ask? Well it is a Ruffed Grouse/Partridge. Remember, Life is good when you're a little crazy!
2024 Maine Grouse Hunt - North Maine Woods Specticle Pond Road
This was a timed hunt to see how fast I could get to 4 birds for the 2024 Maine Grouse Hunt -in the North Maine Woods on Specticle Pond Road. I had worked that morning from home and got out to the woods around noon. Was still a great day hunting.

North Maine Woods Camping - Spider Lake Campsite

This amazing spot sits on Spider Lake in the North Maine Woods at T9 Rll, T9 R12, Piscataquis Co. There are three sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring. One site has a shelter and there is one stinky Privy here as well. Spider lake is 59' at its deepest and they claim there is brook and lake trout in the lake along with American Eel. I have never fished here so I cannot confirm nor deny...

Campfire Stories Episode 1: The Haunting Tale of the Old Base Hospital
Is this on spectacle Pond Road in Aurora or father north? Great video by the way!
Further North. Thank you so much for watching! Amazing how many areas in Maine have “duplicate” locations
Hi! Where did you get the cat tunnels?
We got those from Amazon. Still have them too which is nice. Very good quality. Kucdbun outdoor cat enclosure
lol if I see you I'm gonna have to say hi, I've been on those same roads this year, I'll be out Tuesday edit: oh and I like to gut them on the spot now (leave wings on for warden) and throw them on ice, one of mine was tainted cause the crop blew out on it. Usually doesn't happen but yeah...
If you see me out there, always feel free to stop and chat. I won't be back out though this year due to otgher things going on. Usually just the two weeks and then done. We will clean our birds and toss the parts out of sight. Thanks for watching and happy hunting!!
Awesome
Great video. Looks like a lot of fun. Glad it has been a good season so far
Was a great season. Hope I get out again soon! Thanks for watching
Those are the moments you wish there was no video of
ABCs man….Always Be Clicking lol. 😂 If you see us around, flag us down!
And… just like a true storm trooper….. he missed.
Head shot . Yes Brian always love gear reviews. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much! Will make sure to get that video out!
Excellent Bird Year! 😊
It was great to see them rebound so nicely after last year. Thank you for watching 😊
Great video, Tony. It looks like a fun time. Thank you for sharing with us. Be safe, have fun, and enjoy the beautiful weather.
Thank you! It was an amazing time and can’t wait for camping season next year!
The driver can certainly drive. In reverse! Left the logger a little dust cloud too.
Yeah I was not expecting that truck there nor the dusty road. Good thing was it cleared out fast for him. We didn’t have room to move over so I put my skills to the test lol
Boom! Nice brother.👍👍
Thank you so much!
I live by an echo lake. Where is this one?
@russelllopez4171 this one was at the state park oat ramp. In all the years I have fished there, that was my first one. I have been fishing there for over 45 years lol. Thank you for watching
@@DitchChickenAdventures I live in Cherryville, BC, Canada. The echo lake here is a small lake with good fishing, swimming, ect and only 20 minutes from my house.
Oregon here. Ive been taking out my two boys 7 and ten on the weekends. The last 3 weekends we have seen about 8 birds a day and only taking a couple. Its the first year they have been hunting and teaching them has been a blast.
@@jeremybrown4839 great teaching on the hunting. Last year was rough here and I stopped hunting because there were so few grouse. Glad you get to share the experience with the boys!
Moose and partridge. Hard to beat that combo
@@Barkley512 saw a huge bull today in the rain and heavy winds. Got some new vids coming soon too.
Hey Brian we went in the ashland checkpoint and spent two weeks in the NMWoods had a great time. Met up with old friends. And met some new friends. Excellent hunting trip. Thanks for the video.
It is an amazing place to explore and even better when meeting new people. Hope you had a great time and successful hunt if that is what brought you here. Thank you for watching
We go to the NMW bird hunting every year. And or moose hunt if we win a permit. Now it's on to deer archery, and duck hunting after that season. Then on to ice fishing season. Etc.... good luck on your adventures . And thanks for the videos. And info .
Love the North Maine Woods. Great video
@@calebbarkley3097 thanks man!
Nice! My sisters daughter just went up to the logging Museum in Bradley. Her grandfather Tim works there you probably know him from Holden. Hope all is well great year for birds!
Awesome! I do know Tim. This has been an amazing year for birds. Hope you have a great day.
Thanks
its been slow goin in the houlton/cary area birds have been jumpy! I did get my first bird of the year a few days back, I started late because I was down state for the first week. I'm hoping it picks up in a couple weeks here id love to limit out at least a couple times for the year!
We are getting some birds in the NMW past 6 mile gate. Even with the rain we got a good amount. Think it drive them to the roads to be honest. Best of luck and hope we have a good frost soon!
I went out yesterday 10/06/2024 had lot of fun and missed a lot of shots as the foliage is still pretty thick. As usual we always have a great time. My dad 84 and I 67 still in joy partridge and woodcock hunting so much. We both use Ruger Red Label 28 gauge over and under shotguns with 2 3/4 “ # 7 1/2 3/4oz . Works well for us. And we have our dog Lady a Britney spaniel, who we both love she is seven years old a trooper, ! I hope everyone out there has a great season and enjoys it as much as we do. 😊🙏🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
That is awesome! This is really the only time of year our families all hang out and I love it. I missed a pair this morning in the rain but still having a blast! Have seen four nice moose as well and lots of birds. Would love to try a 28 gauge one day. Enjoy the hunt and best of luck to you both!
Here in Wisconsin it not considered very sporting to ground swat grouse or any game bird or shoot ducks on the water. Shoot them in the air or don't shoot them. Especially from your vehicle getting out and they are on the road.
@@seanbennett7916 thank you for watching!
meh how its done over here. we do walk the roads and trails but there's a lot of ground to cover daily if you're dedicated. I usually try for wing shooting but sometimes a ground bird is what ya get.
Thank You for your report.I went out today 10/06/2024 saw 1 partridge that flew out under thick cover and only saw a flash. Saw 1 woodcock and my hunting pal miss it LOL. Hoping things get better as like you said it was terrible last year. 🙏🏻for a good season. My absolute favorite thing to do.Good luck this year to you and all whom read this. 😊👍🏻
Thank you watching. Glad you got out to hunt! We are back out and seeing a lot in the rain. Hoping to get our fill!
Hunting in Eastern Ontario. The weather finally dropped.. Still lots of cover in the forest. Saw a dozen in 3 hours and bagged 6 with my buddy. The average temp that day was about 50F. I'm expecting with the colder weather toward the middle to end of Oct to be seeing a lot more.
That is awesome for the hunting. We are getting some cold temps this week and it should be moving the birds for sure. Thank you for watching
Yeah that's a game of Doom, first person shooter whole thing. Good stuff.
Come to the dark side and join in the fun
@@DitchChickenAdventures Nope not my thing at all. But good you are enjoying.
Love the updates. Gets me fired up to head up every time. We have a camp in the same area. Lots of birds this week. We did well despite having to get flatbedded out of the woods, lol. Keep it up with the great content!
Thank you so much! Makes me want to keep rolling out videos. Hope the truck is fixed quickly so you can keep on hunting
Great video. Love the grouse videos
Thanks you! Been a great season so far
Great !!
@@calebbarkley3097 thanks! Having a blast
Great Job!!!
@@n3981k thank you! Great season so far
Level up
Saw birds everywhere during the September bull hunt. Multiple coveys on the same road. Birds everywhere at all times of the day. Could have had a 2 man limit every day by noon. All the honey holes are loaded with birds.
We are seeing a lot more birds than expected and I am so happy lol. Hope you had a successful hunt!
@@DitchChickenAdventures Got one Friday evening. Long week of moose hunting. 630lb 43”, Rut seemed to pick up as the week went on. Called in a big trophy bull for a fight to 25y. Pulled him off his cow. Never got anything but a face shot in a staredown. Passed on the same fork horn twice. Shot the last and biggest bull of the 5 shot in our campsite. Was a long night in the woods. Shots at last light. Quartered away, 2 simultaneous shots 06 and 338 mag. No blood, tracks and trails everywhere. Went back at midnight and found him after a half hour grid search. No exit wounds, no blood pool. Double lung and broken far side shoulder. Had him gutted and on ice on the trailer by 3am. Warm night in the 50s. Getting ready for archery opening in York County. Going back north for birds late October. Bird hunting in southern Maine is more like deer hunting. It’s a good year if you shoot one. A lot of days seeing nothing.
It happens. Congratulations on going over 900
Thank you!
There isn't a 2nd hatch of birds. That is a myth that has been debunked over and over. There just isn't enough time.
Have to hunt north Maine woods none anymore in the rest of the state
They are tiny up here. Saw two this morning and let them pass. Size of doves
Thanks for the video . Great info. we are going to the NMW for two weeks this season. Going through the ashland gate and heading way west. This will be our 33 season bird hunting in NMW.
We are at Roth. Ranch this year. Work is keeping me closer to cell service but will be an amazing time no matter we post up
I should be at the Ashland gate around 10:00 am on 9-29 . If I see you filming I will stop. Looking forward to your next video.
Excellent Thanks for posting.
@@petarbubalo231 thank you so much! Will post shorts as well go and then an overall video.
ruffed grouse are shot on the wing and partridge are shot on the ground lol ive had 2 different grouse nest on the wood line in my back yard this year last year had a nest in front of the house along the driveway so in the hudson maine area we have a few birds
LOL love it. I am hearing more reports of lots of birds being seen so this year should be a great year! Thank you for watching.
Looking forward to being there. Never been to the Northeast, or East, but I will be driving out there this fall from the Desert Southwest so I'm familiar with dust.
Moose hunt? Safe travels and be careful of the trucks. I have a video on dangers to be aware of in the woods. Decent watch
@@DitchChickenAdventuresI wish it was for moose. Just coming over for birds; Grouse, Black Duck, Eider.
@@DitchChickenAdventuresps. Last year I drove to Prudhoe Bay and had to slow down, pull over and give way to the trucks.
@@BreckTaxi will be a great time! If you are up around Ashland gate, you may see us out filming. Stop by and say hi! Should have the burrito truck sticker on the back window by then
Its gonna be fun no matter the weather and dust. Camp food and fireside chats are the best. Be safe, wear at least one piece of orange....bear, coyote, and moose hunters are also out their having fun.
Dust? What dust? Thought that was the NMW paint job!! Can't wait for Saturday.
Good deal good luck on the game of Doom, bird edition.
lol won’t be able to shake that one now
Great video! I am thinking moderate. It won’t be a grand slam year but certainly better than last year. I say moderate because I think it will take a bit for the population to rebound from the high mortality rate of the 2023 hatch.
Thanks! Yep thing a couple birds a day per two person group if they are hunting to allow for a rebound. Leave the little alone like in the video.
I agree. I’m a logger in the NMW by trade and in the last month I’ve had days where I’ve seen zero birds and other days where I’ve seen 8-10 birds. It will be better than last fall for sure but definitely not a banner season. Maybe in another year or two.
Thank you bud! Looking forward to this season. If you hunt, good luck to you on yours.
Good luck hunting

Looks like panning is very patient work. Thanks for the lesson!
Thank you 😊. I went to do this for the first official time this year and we got some dust from a stream we didn’t think would give anything. Patience is a must for sure lol
Nice
Awesome! 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
I would rather spend my time fishing that stream than waste it hoping for a few specs of gold .
lol that was the plan at one point. I would fish and then try panning. We panned another stream this year and I forgot my fishing gear. Was a sad day
Great job Tony. We have to admit there are some strong women in Maine. We all came from good stock. If a man can do it, so can we women. 😁
That is true
They were at the Moose drawing in Fort Kent. Pretty entertaining show
Great show!
