#21 HUGE 3’ x 4’ Bloom Technique Painting with Giant Cells
This was a commission painting for my friend Chris’ new TV production studio in Hackensack, NJ.
After a series of test paintings (there were 9, in total), I finally came up with a new pouring medium formula and a great design concept. I was hoping those two elements would pour and dry as I had imagined they would…AND THEY DID!!
Here is the formula I used for this painting (new pouring medium formula from my previous paintings):
POURING MEDIUM:
**Glidden Premium Exterior Paint + Primer
Model number GL6813
Semi-Gloss
BASE 3 (Must be tinted)
Available at Home Depot
**Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish
(WATER BASED)
CLEAR GLOSS
Available at Lowe’s

#20 "Harmony" Bloom Technique Repair Crazing on an Acrylic Pour Painting
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 года назад
Inspired by the painting I made for my bestie, Amy (in video #19), I wanted to do an entire painting using just three colors: Payne’s Gray, Cadmium-Free Red Deep, and Amsterdam Deep Gold. As sometimes happens when you cover over a previously used canvas, some crazing appeared when this painting dried. In this video, I show you how I repair crazing using a fine tipped paint brush and filling in ...
(#19) “Amy’s Birthday Present” Bloom Technique Acrylic Painting With Resin Application Step By Step!
Просмотров 3203 года назад
I made this birthday present for my bestie from college, Amy. She sent me a photo of the room where it would ultimately hang and I made a series of color choices plus threw in more of the red that she asked for. I shaped my acrylic puddle to mimic the silhouette of the guitars on the wall, but that shape didn’t transfer over to the final product. Still couldn’t be happier with the way this turn...

I DID IT!!! I’ve had this canvas in my house for a full year. I was so intimidated by the idea of trying to paint a 12 square foot canvas, that I couldn’t even attempt this until my skills had developed…GREATLY. This is the first painting (of 4) that I made for my friend’s Andy and Kim’s house. Do you use larger offset clips for larger paintings or is this size good for larger paintings as well?

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio
      @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio 2 месяца назад

      I don’t, actually. The largest paintings I’ve done are 3 feet by 4 feet and as long as you can screw the offset clips into the frame, they should be secure enough to hold the wire and the painting. BUT, if you’d like to use larger clips for larger paintings to feel even that much more secure, by all means, go ahead. Nothing is as comforting as peace of mind.

    Thanks for showing it with both coated and uncoated wires. It seems that most pros (or, at least, their YT videos) use coated wire. However, my local DIY/hardware shops don't stock that, just the plain, brass stranded stuff, so I was wondering if it was the same technique for both.

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio
      @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio 3 месяца назад

      I believe it would be the same tying technique for the aluminum and brass…as long as the brass wire will hold its shape when you wind it around itself at the end. If it doesn’t hold itself, I would use the crimping loop sleeves to make sure the wire is secure on the back of your painting. Nothing worse than having a painting fall from the wall because the wire came loose. Thank you so much for watching!!

      Yes. I usually use a nail in the wall to hang the paintings. You can use whatever you’d like as long as the hook or nail can handle the weight of the painting-and the wall can support the weight of the painting and hook/nail as well. Best of luck!!

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio

      This knot is VERY similar to a bowline knot. But, the bowline is known for being able to tie and untie it easily. With the crimping loop sleeve, this picture hanging knot should not move or loosen and won’t be easily untied unless it’s cut. Thanks for watching!!

    Thank you! I have 5 paintings that I need to do this with but I want to hang them all in a straight line (top edge). How can i make sure the tension is the same for all paintings? Because if tension is different each one will be sagging down differently

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio
      @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio 2 года назад

      That’s an excellent question!! I would suggest cutting your wire for all of the paintings to be the same exact length…IF your paintings are all the same dimensions. Then you can tie them all in the exact same way. Then, test them all on the exact same nail (or whatever method you are using to hang them on the wall) and mark the wall where the top edge of each painting touches the wall, just to see if the tension is equal on each one. I have some paintings hung next to each other with the top edge in a line with about 6 inches in between them. I put the nail in the wall at the same height (measuring from the ceiling down) and adjusted the hung paintings by hanging them and pulling down GENTLY on the painting to stretch the wire on the nail just enough to match the height of the neighboring painting. Hope that makes sense. Let me know how it goes! And thanks for watching!!

      So if there is a larger painting that is unframed, does that mean the wire might not hold properly over time? I typically use a heavy duty D-ring on the inside of a larger canvas. Is that problematic?

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio
      @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio Год назад

      @nicolacochran I’m a bit confused. Are you saying that you attach a D-ring directly onto a canvas that isn’t in a frame? I’m not sure how that’s possible. The canvas won’t be strong enough to screw anything into it without a frame. How does your canvas hold its shape without a wooden frame to support it?

    I have a very difficult time starting at the second step. I can't get the wire up through the hole. I have tried tweezers, to no avail. I have given up. I now just go with the other method, even though the coated wire with the crimping tools look so much more elegant. I am sure I am doing something wrong.

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio
      @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio 2 года назад

      Hi! So, it took me a little time to figure out how to solve your problem, but I think I did it! The issue you're having is getting the wire to go UP through the open hole in the offset canvas clip (what I call the "bracket" in this video). This is the "U" step in the acronym D.O.U.D., right? There can be a couple of solutions. 1. You can use your needle nose pliers to guide the wire up through the hole in the offset clip instead of trying to grab the wire THROUGH the hole with the pliers or tweezers--ASSUMING THE HOLE IN THE CLIP YOU ARE USING IS BIG ENOUGH TO FIT TWO WIRES. If the hole in the offset clip ISN'T big enough for two wires, there's another solution.... 2. You can get a clip with a larger hole (not sure if this Amazon link will work here or not, but I'll put the link below). You can use any size clip that you screw onto the back of the canvas (make sure it's rated to hold more than the weight of your painting) and there are some that are made with MUCH larger holes that would easily accommodate two wires. If the link for the clip (below) doesn't work, go to Amazon and type in "Heavy Duty D-Ring Picture Hangers - 50 Pack - 2 Hole with Screws - Picture Hang Solutions" as an example of what I mean. You can tie the wire the same exact way I show in the video using the crimping loop sleeves, but the hole itself is MUCH larger than the offset clips I'm using in the video. Those D-Ring clips in the link below will support 40 pounds, so if your painting is heavier than that, you'll want larger clips. I like to use clips that are rated for at least 20 pounds MORE than the weight of my canvas--just as a safety measure. Here's the link--again, it might not work here in the RUclips comments section. www.amazon.com/Heavy-Duty-D-Ring-Picture-Hangers/dp/B017DQ9GC6/ref=pd_day0fbt_img_sccl_1/146-0426336-6779754?pd_rd_w=tA6fg&pf_rd_p=bcb8482a-3db5-4b0b-9f15-b86e24acdb00&pf_rd_r=AEECPZ1C385FVVT5TD90&pd_rd_r=44b8c304-c0b6-471e-9580-9be202025ca0&pd_rd_wg=VnWIQ&pd_rd_i=B017DQ9GC6&th=1 I hope this helps! I am having a worst time locating the Glidden essential GLE-7013 N is there anything you can recommend other than this product ? I'm ready to roll except for this one paint

      YES!!! I had the same problem. Home Depot is no longer carrying that brand/model of the paint. I switched to GLIDDEN PREMIUM GL6813 BASE 3 (must be tinted). That can be used in the exact same measurements at the GLIDDEN Essentials. It’s more expensive, but it works BEAUTIFULLY!! PLEASE let me know how it works out for you!!!

      This Glidden Premium can be found at the Home Depot also.

    Wow Todd….amazing work! Thanks for explaining what to do with the crazies🤣. Was getting frustrated with some cracking, and have been experimenting with different pillows and mixes to see what works. I think I am going to try your recommendations with the Gliden paints next, and attempt to get an even coat. You are great, thanks again for this video!

      Yay!! I’m so glad you found these tips helpful! I needed someone to explain to me what was happening when I first started and now I can be that resource for people!

    Todd, I love your attitude and presentation!🤣 This was my first time watching you, and I am truly impressed. I can’t wait to try your recipes, as I am new to the fluid art method. I have been watching so many different artists and their methods, and ai am getting a lot of cracking and crazying still. Hopefully your videos will be the last I need to get this right! How long does your “freshest is bestest” good for after mixed, basically, when would you recommend getting rid of the old and making a new batch? Thanks!!

    • @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio
      @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio 2 года назад

      Thanks for the note and follow!! Ideally, you can keep the mixture for about a week before you need to consider making a new batch. Keep me posted on your progress!! I’d love to see how you’re doing. My Instagram (as I said in the video) it s @ToddAlanCrainArtStudio

      And also, about the crazing: it’s likely to happen if you are painting over a previously dried painting. One of the reasons it happens is because the wet paint dries faster on the surface while the pain underneath isn’t get enough air to dry at the same speed. Covering your work (with a box) can slow down the drying process a bit OR adding some GAC 800 to your paint mix. That slows down the drying process as well.

      @@ToddAlanCrainArtStudio ohhhhh, alrighty then! Makes sense. I’m just getting back into my artistry after being so busy with “mom life” and leaving the military. I think the fluid art is so interesting and appeared easy enough to do….but all of these different paints and mixes were driving me crazy (along with the drying paint🤣). I have most of the materials on hand, so thankfully just have to make a small list of what to go grab to start mixing and painting now! Again, thank you, and happy painting to you too!!🤗

    I'm wondering if you absolutely have to have the liquitex ink and the amsterdam paint will anything else work I trying to do Christmas presents last min and don't have anywhere to purchase them close

      Unfortunately, I’ve never found any other brand to work that would make cells. People have used silicone oil in their paintings to create cells, but I stopped using that when I discovered the Amsterdam/cell activator combo. Silicone oil can be found at hardware stores and should be more readily available than the Liquitex ink might. It takes some experimentation, but you can figure it out. The secret with silicone oil is to put just a few drops in ONLY ONE of your colors that you are using. If all of the colors have silicone oil, it’s harder to get cells to appear. I hope that helps!!
