Grizzly Bear Encounter on horseback. A tale of having a close call.
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.4 года назад
Quite a few folks have asked about Grizzly encounters on horseback. It really depends on the situation and the horse you're riding. My horses are Bear veterans and they generally remain calm when we come upon one. I also ride with my GSP who wears a sleigh bell on her collar and stays up to 50 yards ahead of my saddle horse. Charges by a Grizzly are rare on horseback but they do occasionally oc...

    crying.............well, thanks. that was a hard story to hear. And I thought it was just gonna be a nice little chat to where he'd go and walk us through a little adventure or ten, and it would be a fairytale ending. But, I guess reality has always been it's a rough ride for many, and gets hard in life more often than not. And rarely has some beautiful blissful end. But , I'm thankful that you shared with us, and I know that we aren't alone and that others have been through it too. Sometimes worse than we have. But God bless you, and yours, and I hope you get to see him again in heaven. Where you won't be worried, about wolves, or coffin bones.

    That sad story happened July 2004. We were walking the trail in a bit from the trailhead that day and packed in the next day. My husband, young daughter and I were walking down to the creek and you were above us on the trail. We followed you out and saw the sorrel's hoof in the trail. You all were loading up the sorrel in the trailer when we got to the trailhead and you looked grief stricken.

    Wow, what a fantastic experience for you both! My dad loved WY, and horses both. He's no longer with me, but he would always tell me that WY was like "Heaven on Earth." I imagine him now doing exactly what you're doing in this vid... riding his beloved mare Utada in country just like this! Your animals look beautiful. Had to laugh at your dog... looked like it was having the time of its life frolicking through that meadow! 😁 And the best kind of riding partners if you ask me! 😉

    Thank you for your story. I get a tiny inkling of the privilege you must feel you have experienced to live with horses. I say an inkling because I got the chance to ride a mare back in ‘82 and ‘83 with the brand “Poco D 123”. She was a trail horse at summer camp where I worked in East Texas. I wasn’t much of a rider like my daddy was, but I appreciated her structure and demeanor. Unfortunately, she did not pass that bit on to her daughter, Fair Warning. That one eyed a buddy of mine and landed a solid kick right on his sternum. I didn’t see the kick, but I did see the horseshoe impression on his chest. You wouldn’t know where I could learn more about Poco D 123, would you? She was special. I took her out alone once there for a long ride and knew it was a once in a lifetime.

    Stuff happens on horses. I was around 13 years old and the neighbor girl was 11. We both had horses and she wanted to ride over to her grandparents house about 2 miles away. I caught and saddled both horses and away we went. As we got near to her grandparents house, she kicked her horse into a gallop and I followed. The last couple hundreds yards were on pavement. Her horse stepped on a metal grate in the road and shied to one side. The saddle turned under and she fell off on the pavement head first. Knocked her out cold. I rode to the house and got help and they call an ambulance. They took her 75/miles to a major hospital where she recovered with no permanent damage. What happened? A horse will sometimes extend its belly when you put the saddle on so as to be able to have a looser girth after you put it on and cinch it. Then they will go back to normal and the girth is looser and more comfortable for them. You have to go back and re-tighten the girth again to make sure it is cinched up. I didn’t do that and it was my fault for her injury. Thank God she wasn’t permanently injured and it was a lesson learned for both of us.

    If this is the same Double Cabins campsite in the hills north of Dubois, I rode for a rancher there, summer 2001. Lived in Bear-Pass Cabin for a few weeks, before moving cow/calf pairs east (around the other side) right about a few weeks before 9/11. Rugged country, to be sure.

    15 mules with baggage for 16 People, what a lot of material for a ride through the Wilderness. is it necessary

    • @wyominghorseman9172
      @wyominghorseman9172 4 года назад

      Well Heinrich these pack trips are generally for 10 to 14 days in duration. They Include tents for lodging, all meals, deserts and snacks. There are guides for fly fishing, cooks, camp roust about's, wranglers for the stock and everything necessary for guest comfort and safety. The base camps are generally 28 to 35 miles into the Wilderness from a trail head. They provide guided day rides from the main camp for the guests. A mule can comfortably carry 180 ponds of dead weight but over the rough wilderness trails at high altitude over such long distances it's better to carry less on each with one spare pack stock and one spare saddle mount.
