This is 3 months later (August) How are your thinning areas progressing? The advice about D3, Castor oil, and Iron is excellent. I also take biotin but I am 50+. I also have hand in hair syndrome and consequently this next piece of advice is a favorite- daily scalp massage. Use the pad of your fingertip not the nail. Apply gentle pressure in a circular motion. Try not to disturb strands of hair with in the locs as you move your fingers around your scalp. Good luck! I’m 2 years and 5 months loc’d and I could not have made a better decision. It’s not a hairstyle, it’s a lifestyle.

Please listen to your scalp. It needs to rest. 5 weeks is too soon for a retie. I had to stretch my reties to every 8-10 weeks (prefer 10 wks), because the frequent reties were causing scalp tenderness and thinning. My microlocs are thriving now, and the tenderness has stopped, and the thinning areas have filled in. You will not get holes in your microlocs. You can do it, Sis!

I would suggest not interlocking it too often...maybe every six months (twice a year). Every six to eight weeks is too often.

Also freshly retied hair is often thinner at the base as it still has to bulk up and go through the locking process. The loose hair around locks looks normal hair has to be incorporated into shaft of lock when it’s long enough. And your hair could be growing slowly & 6-8 weeks could be better for you 😊

I have that issue before I had started my locs but my iron was low, so i pay attention if my hair is shedding to nuch or nails breaking. Im anemic so ot could be an internal issue

I like the method used to loc your hair. I live in Brooklyn, NY. I'm looking to get my hair locked, too. WHERE DID YOU GO IN BROOKLYN? $700 seems like a lot but I like the fact that they braided the roots and then twisted the rest so maybe it's worth $700. They did a nice job, though.

My hair did the same thing. Your vitamin D levels are probably low. When it’s low your hair will thin and break off in your crown. Your nails will break too.I started taking vitamin D3 daily now weekly now my hair has grown back. No more breakage

Thinning can be caused from retwisting your hair too often and also intertwining your locs. Intertwining pulls your hair and put a lot of pressure and stress on your scalp. Give your hair a break; leave it alone and let it breathe.Try waiting 6 months between retwist and use castor oil.

Btw my locs cost me time & effort £2 for shampoo & £4 for 100% avocado oil that lasts me 8 months then £2 rose water & £6.99 As I Am leave in castor oil conditioner spray that me & my sons use so lasts a few months each tine. What I’m saying is locs can cost as much or as little as you want them to. I have hair growing in bold areas that I had to add new locs to same with my sister and we generally treat our hair with natural oils accept that the locs will mature as they want to & kept it moving with our lives. But I’m looking forward to your one year mark 🎉🇬🇧👍🏾

Having locs a journey along the way you gonna learn about yourself, your hair, patience & tolerance. You are so early into this journey that it’s not a massive issue so don’t worry or over think it. I also have fine strands hair average density that can break very easily so I try (5yrs loc’d) to keep my hands out of my head, but yes any hair style manipulation can contribute to thinning so will all the other factors mentioned. Also don’t compare the ends of hair to interlocked section as 2 strand twist ends take a few years to even out if they are not lost due to eventual trimming. I’m not a loctition but your hair is progressing nicely relax & enjoy them. 😊🇬🇧

I use Herbal Essence Daily Detox Clean shampoo it’s £1.95 here so bout $2 the whole family using for the last 4-5 years. It’s not specifically for Afro hair but all hair is protein I’m not prepared to pay over the odds for specific shampoos for “black” hair they are literally over priced & not necessarily any better than regular ones made for Caucasian hair. So I don’t know if you have it in the States but there are 2 fragrances & they both smell Devine & get hair really clean. Failing that Tresemmé Replenish & cleanse shampoo is also not bad 👍🏾🇬🇧

Well done young lady you did a great job. Retying your own hair is definitely a labour of love but you get to know your locs inside out & it gets easier the more you do it. To clean up parts allow the hair to grow out a little Tk extra in length in that area then carefully repart the sections distributing hair to where you want, may take a few sessions to do it depending on how uneven it is. Don’t beat yourself up over who installed them, the stylist should’ve made the centre part symmetrical it would annoy me too. But it’s fixable may take a little effort to do but your locs are still beautiful. When I fixed my locs 1-2 years into journey I combed the offending ones out & reestablished them can’t tell where they were now. So fix them now & enjoy the rest of your journey. Nice update hair progressing really well. Be careful of castor oil it’s so thick & gloopy & could be attracting the lint in areas you pointed out. It has to be washed out thoroughly with shampoo in those areas. I also coloured my hair ends before loccing & over time they shed, I have fine hair strands medium density I found over my 4 years being loc’d that wear & tear of outing through loc tool made some weaker ends that I trimmed every now & then.
