My Least Favorite Pool Drill
I learned this drill from Alex Lely who called it "Around the World" and it's probably the drill I dislike the most but there's little point in practicing the easy shots, right?

8 Ball Practice on Independence Day
Просмотров 2603 месяца назад
Was hoping to beat my high score of 246 but a miscue and two misses prevented me from doing any better than 222. Game is simple: Rack fives striped balls and five solid balls in a 10-ball pattern. Break. Take ball in hand. Run out either stripes or solids and then the remaining balls. One additional ball in hand if you miss. Keep score just like bowling: runout w/ no misses = strike, one miss =...

My time at the table has been sporadic due to professional obligations. (Unfortunately, playing pool doesn't pay the bills. Rather, it only incurs expenses. 😡) And it shows when I get a game on the weekend and my safety shots are about as useful as a handbrake on a canoe, so here I am, trying to work on it with "trying" being the key term there.

As the end of 2023 approaches, I'm going to be taking a very long and hard look at my entire game in an attempt to improve as much as possible in 2024, and I mean big time. Until then, I wanted to practice a few run out games because part of the strategy going into next year is going to include identifying my current speed. I don't have a Fargorate because I've only played in one tournament, so...

The correct shot here 1:19 with BIH is pocketing either the 12 or 13. No reason to hope for a good breakout when you can shoot one of the balls in the cluster with BIH.

Love the practice session and your hexagonal chalk butt. Hate the ball set (Arasmith traditionalist and I hate the ballsets with pink 4s too). You would probably get more out of the safeties by playing the same safety several times until you are successful 3 times in a row.

  • @JohnCarterRocks

Stroke looks great compared to a few months ago when I commented. No grip hand wobbling side to side. A couple practice strokes. Pause. Fire.

  • @CueballcontrolSometimes

Look at the before and after, 14:52 and 14:54 looks like the butt moves right at least 3". Great position for the camera to see flaws, I suggest doing this shot some more and recording. Longer back stroke, longer follow through and focus on straight cueing. The practice on safeties is not lost, you have learned what is high % and what is not.

Thanks for sharing your excellent practice drills. Great editing job. I disagree with your 1 for 8 assessment of your target drill at 12:50 - I think your target area for the two rail shot is way too small - it looks slightly larger than what I think the target area should be for a stop shot (should probably be the size of an 11 x 14 piece of paper). I would love to see you post more league matches.

Thanks for sharing and love the graphics - well done. On many racks it seemed like you did not address problems balls soon enough in the rack. That tends to equalize your skill level advantage in 8 ball where it is easier for the lower level player to make balls with a relatively empty table.

I love your pool room, might be the best views I’ve seen in a pool video,I just clicked on the video to see your room layout as I’m building my “retirement”pool table area, anyway I watched the whole damn video just for the sounds and sights of the room and a guy who loves shooting pool balls over and over and over… I do have a question tho, what is your distance from table edge to wall and table edge to fireplace,I have Avery similar situation and can only afford about 58” on one side and wondering if it’s too tight, thanks in advance, fantastic room and video!!

    • @no1poolfan
      @no1poolfan 7 месяцев назад

Thanks! Edge of the table to the walls on either side of the table is 54 inches so, when the cue ball is on one of the long rails and I'm shooting straight toward the opposite long rail, I need to use a shorter 52 inch cue.

Mine is a 5/16/14. For me is more about the thickness' I like my shaft to be around 12 mm and to be honest any of these shafts are just as good as the ignite the ignite is way overpriced.

If I may, as an instructor, 🎉I would like to offer my insights on your game. First, you seem to be hitting every shot with the same hard stroke, pretty much resulting with the same speed on every shot. 😮Why? Although, staying with one speed helps on banks to remove one variable out of the equation, so it somewhat simplifies those shots, it still limits many available options on them, especially with regard to position play. And over time it will serve to retard the amount you should be learning as to what the various cueball speeds and spins have in effecting bank shots. That's critical in becoming a good bank shooter. Also, I think it would help for you to lighten up your grip on the cue, from what I can observe. On that first series of shots, I noticed your stance was not always consistent, and I could often tell when you were probably going to miss because of it. So, I strongly recommend that you check your stance alignment before each shot more carefully. A poorly aligned stance will not only make the shot more difficult to aim, but it also lowers the consistency in one's pocketing of balls. Hope I helped you some. Good luck and good shooting!
