It's officially over - I'M LEAVING ADOBE. But what programs should I use instead?
✨ I am SERIOUSLY over Adobe. Lightroom, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects and especially Premier Pro. I'm so sick of paying $100 a month, for a suite that doesn't work properly. And what's funny? While I was looking for replacements... I found that I wasn't the only one (by a LONG shot!)
Also, on a completely different note... no, I haven't been fingerprinted by the police lately... but I did put a fresh dye through my hair - which leaves blue residue on my fingers... and everywhere else! lol. #itstotallyworthit

      @@redandthewolfphotography I would prefer Shutterstock. 500px can be a bit strange in accepting images. Be aware your photo will be rejected if you show a house without getting the owner agreement (quite a universal rule on all platforms). I have 26 photos they selected for licencing but I haven't been able to make one single cent out of it. I don't complain (I'm not on 500px for this) but I wouldn't pick up 500px as my first stock photo platform.

    The Affinity suite of tools are really great. I've been using them for a few years now. Resolve is definitely the best direction for video, imo. I ran Darktable for a long time, when I was on Linux. When I moved to MacOS, I found the interface was super clumsy, so I stopped using it. The library function was never something I used anyway, preferring to catalogue through the file system. If you're on a Mac, and need to batch process a bunch, there's also Retrobatch, which might save you a bit of time.

    • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography 5 дней назад

      I haven't heard of Retrobatch. I'll have to look into it. I'm running windows, so I'm keen to see how Darktable does for me. And i've heard (repeatedly now! lol) how good the Affiity suite is... so if DarkTable doesn't work out for me, I'll definitely head there next. And I'm the same - I prefer to keep all my photo's catalogued on my QNAP, rather than on my editing software. And as for Resolve? I LOVE it! I can't believe how easy it is to pick up and I truly love the interface. My plan is to just get used to all the basics for now cos there's SO much for me to learn and upgrade at this point - then get into the colour grading and stuff.

    At work, I use current Photoshop because it is needed, at home, I soldier on with CS6 suite that I bought over a dozen years ago. At work, it's very stable (on a pc) (we don't use Premier Pro) on a pretty new system. At home, also stable, but at least 1/3 faster, even on a 7 year old iMac. I will probably get Affinity suite for less than 100 USD. It has Photo (Photoshop), Designer (Illustrator) and Publisher (InDesign), it doesn't have equivalent of AfterEffects, but I don't use that too much now.

      The newer versions just aren't tested enough. While I like the concept of being on a subscription and getting the latest updates immediately, I just feel like they're not optimised properly and just being done and put out quickly. And I know I can choose to use older versions even on the subscription model, but it feels like they've stopped bothering to make old versions complete and just moved onto the next one.

    What are your computer specs? Im running a 7950x cpu, 64gb ddr5 ram, 4090 gpu. Yes, the computer costs roughly $4500USD but when it comes to speed and stability, well worth the money. No crashing issues at all. If i got a lower tier system, I would expect my programs to run not as good. I use lightroom, lightroom classic, premier pro and after effects.

    • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography 6 дней назад

      Yea - I would expect that if my system cost that much it wouldn't be crashing constantly either - but if that's the case, Adobe shouldn't sell you a product. Adobe's requirements to run Premier are: Memory: 8 GB. Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970. CPU: Intel Core i3-6100. File Size: 8 GB. OS: Windows 10 64-Bit. I'm running a 16GB RAM, Intel i7, windows 11, GeForce GTX1660Ti. I'm specifically on a gaming laptop with specs bought for running Adobe. That's literally what I had in mind when we bought it. So while I'm no where near your system - according to Adobe, I should be able to run their product fine. I have heard that bigger systems can basically "brute force" premier - but then that means Adobe's lying to us - their product requires more than the specs they've provided. I expect that if I buy a product, it works as it says it would. If I bought a fridge that said I could plug it in to my household electrics and it would work fine, but every time I plugged it in, it shut down the entire power in the house - I'd be taking it back. AND, on top of that - if Resolve isn't doing it, what's Adobe's excuse? So while I agree that higher specs on your system make for easier running - Adobe shouldn't be claiming a product works properly when it doesn't. Plus have you seen the amount of videographers giving up on Adobe? I was amazed - the amount I found when I was struggling - even big videographers and youtubers are leaving Adobe. So it's not only me that's unhappy.

    Hi Tracy, a few weeks ago one of your vids popped up in my suggestions and somehow I liked it. Concerning alternatives to Adobe: have you considered Affinity products? As far as I know they have been recently purchased by Canva and offer free test versions of their software (Affinity Photo/ Affinity Designer/ Affinity Publisher) If you like the programs you only pay once, which is a great advantage. I also work with DaVinci Resolve (Free Version) and was able to cut, design aso all my client videos without the need to buy the full version. Great videos I don’t blame you leaving Adobe, when I started to do my photography and I realised I would have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to Adobe I looked for something else. I have gone for On1 which does have a trail version and then you pay a one off fee. As I never used this type of programme before it has taken me a while to find my way round but the review on RUclips by people who have moved from Adobe says it easy to pick up. PS did you realise Shutterstock also have a default enable use your photo to train AI. I’ve disable it now. Keep up with videos I also love James Popsys channel.

    • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography 6 дней назад

      Morning! I figured that since I was going to be using multiple products in Adobe's suite, I may as well pay the subscription - and when I started a few years back, it was AUD$82 per month - which translated as about $87 NZD. So I could justify paying like $22 a week considering I was using it for a little bit of client work too. But it's just going up and up, and now it's over $100 - which is not a HUGE increase, but that's over $1200 a year for me, and it's really adding up. Truthfully, if everything worked without a hitch - I probably would have kept paying just for the ease and simplicity. I haven't heard of On1. I'll have to look it up. :) And yes, I did know about Shutterstock - I think Adobe stock might do the same thing... but I kind of don't mind, since they're paying me - not the other way around... and providing their platform for free for me to use. In my mind, there's a difference there only because you waive all confidentiality rights when you post them up publicly - like, I don't put my kids faces up on my stock websites - but I certainly do edit them in lightroom - that to me is a breach of my privacy. And yes - James Popsys is just the best. He's so easy to watch, and it feels like you're just having a one on one lesson with him. :)

    This is the first "in my bag" video I've watched that mentioned tissues, sanitizer, water, and other personal items. I mostly do landscape and cityscape photography, and I think they are even more important there. Baby wipes are also great when you are away from running water, because sometimes you just really need to wash your hands. Trash bags are always useful for an impromptu gear/bag cover, but I also carry them along with rubber gloves, especially when I'm on a beach. Picking up a bit of trash removes it from your shot, gives you an excuse to scope out different angles, but more importantly, I want my photographs and deeds to honor the natural world.

Luckily (since having kids of my own) I've always had a spare bag around. It's amazing the small things that can make or break a shoot either for the clients or yourself. And a bad shoot can knock your confidence, so small things like these can just "mitigate" shall we say the possibility of a bad shoot. :)

    Some other potential streams are product photography for other artisans that have small businesses selling their creations. Alternatively, giving lessons on how those artisans could improve their own product photography. Similarly, action photography of local children playing sports; pet photography for local residents; food photography for local restaurants. These are things that can be done close to home.

    What is a good and cheap starter. Camera and lens combo for stock photography

    • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography 22 дня назад

      Hey Christian, I've been thinking about your question for a few days. The hardest part about stock photography, is that it's so open. If you were doing products at home in a controlled setting and had a good lighting setup (either natural light or lighting), you could easily get away with entry level camera's of any brand. Anything with changable lenses pretty much. A lot of people are now taking photo's on their iphones and submitting them too. But if you were wanting to do anything and everything - I'd have to recommend a bigger more expensive camera that can deal with all lighting situations. My suggestion would be to look on a second hand website (I'm not sure where you live, so here in NZ that's TradeMe, but for you it might be Ebay or Craigslist?) and find a mid-range camera. Something along the lines of a Canon 80D. That was my mid-range camera. And the stock 18-55 lens I had on it was great too. You can also grab a 50mm 1.8 prime lens second hand for pretty cheap - they're fairly inexpensive brand new too. My first camera was a Canon 600D, also known as a Rebel T3i in other parts of the world. And I did get some good shots on that. But if the lighting wasn't great, the images were "noisy". It's probably a good idea for a video to make actually, because it's quite a big question - "cheap" for one isn't specifically cheap for someone else. I hope this is helpful though. And if you want to go with a different brand other than canon, just google "what's the Sony equivalent of the Canon 80D" or something like that, and you'll find camera's with similar specifications.

    • @ChristianGutierrez
      @ChristianGutierrez 22 дня назад

      @@redandthewolfphotography I will start looking on ebay for the Canon 80D plus the lenses you mentioned. I am flattered that you write such a long response to my question, it’s just what I needed, and I know many others out there have asked the same thing…good video idea 💡! Thank you!

    • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography 21 день назад

      @@ChristianGutierrez You're so welcome! I had so many questions myself at the beginning! :) (And still do. lol). I love my 80D and still use it to do all my filming for youtube. I love the flip out screen and the fact that it's HEAPS lighter than my big 5D. I mainly upgraded to the 5D because I knew that moving forward I wanted to do more client work, and it has a double card slot - so if one corrupts for any reason, you still have the backup. But the 80D did me super well. Also I wanted to keep it as a back up camera in case anything happened to my 5D and I had client work to do. So the 80 should be good moving forward for you too. :)

    I've been uploading to stock for almost five years and Adobe is consistently my worst performing platform. As Tracy mentioned, Adobe has rejected photos that have generated good sales on other platforms and, for me, they have the highest rejection rate by far. Additionally, they are slow in reviewing images. I currently have images that have been waiting for review for more than three months. My best performing platform has consistently been iStock.

    • @redandthewolfphotography

      Hi Mike! Sorry I didn't reply sooner, occasionally RUclips doesn't tell me about all my comments. lol. I'm actually just heading into iStock too - having a bit of a shake up. I'm really beginning to wonder if people do well on certain platforms because of their style of photography? I mean - the clientelle for Adobe might be slightly different to the clientelle of iStock... so perhaps that's why some of us do well on one platform but not another... 🤔

    • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography 28 дней назад

      Hi! So, when the photo's come directly off your camera roll, they're titled as alphanumeric. So something like "IMG323475". Essentially, some of the stock agencies don't like that - they want you to title it more effectively. So even if i'd just called the files "pretty-yellow-sunflowers.jpg" it would have been better. I'm not sure if it makes things more searchable, but I do try to give my photo's a decent name - often I do the keyword research first and then re-name them with some of the best keywords I find. I'm not sure if it actually makes a difference to searchability - but that name will still be in the meta data online, so my guess is that it probably does improve searchability on the sites.

      @@redandthewolfphotography oh wow, hadn't realized that the filename itself might be an issue! so I guess I'll have to change the ones I uploaded to pond5... won't be accepted this way. I'm just starting out with stock photography and am grateful for your help! 😊🙏

      @geronimoflyingfree They will tell you if it's an issue. Basically, start with uploading 10 or 20 and see what kind of response you get. But yea, for some agencies they prefer you make them. Not enough to get paid yet but it was a thrill that someone actually paid money for a picture that I took. That said, what was REALLY A THRILL was scrolling through the Google news feed one morning and seeing one of my pictures as the banner of a news head line complete with a credit for it. Like you, I've got 3 children that have been home schooled, mainly by my amazing wife. The oldest just finished her first year of college. One piece of advice that I heard recently, and really fits with what I did, is to just do it. If you wait until you have all the pieces perfect and ready, you'll be waiting a long time. I'm still growing and learning and trying to improve all the time. I can't compete with the large channels for various reasons, not the least of which is time. Oh, and the link to Patrick's channel in your description doesn't work. I did find him via a search, but thought you'd want to know.

    • @redandthewolfphotography

      Hey Craig. Thanks for the link feedback - I'll make sure to fix that asap! I've subbed to your channel too - it's great to see other small channels coming up. And yes - the concept of "I'll do it when the time is right"... the time is almost never "right"! And even if you stumble when you start - it's better to at least have started than not. And all those bigger channels - they started right where we are. Once upon a time, even Peter McKinnon probably only had his Mum subscribed. lol. But yes - time is totally different when you have other responsibilities. That's why all my stuff so far is just talking head - it's the easiest for me to produce - lowest hanging fruit, if you will. One day I'd love to be out there getting amazing b-roll, but I just don't understand my camera well enough for that to be easy. I'm starting where I'm at - but I do have some pretty big self-improvement goals. It just means I need to be a lot more strategic about upleveling - AND really push myself out of my comfort zone. And instead of just upleveling one thing at a time, I'm trying to do a tonne this year, so it's kind of all being thrown in together. lol. It's weird - cos when you finally start to get good photography work - it's kind of like you don't want your videography, or other area's your testing in, to be less than the new standard you've set yourself - but every area is a new journey - so I've made peace with my work looking all over the place. I'll make sure to go check out some of your video's too! :)

I even ran into a woman that worked for a stock site, and she said I should be putting shots on stock. Unfortunately I am the type of person that has to research everything to death before starting. • @redandthewolfphotography
      @redandthewolfphotography Месяц назад

      Hey Jack! What a neat comment to wake up to this morning! :) I am also the kind of person that likes to do a million amounts of research - I think as you get older you realise that there's always more to something than you thought there was, so you become a little paranoid about moving forward until you've got "all the info". lol. At least, that's how I felt. In the end, after YEARS of wanting to do things and never moving forward, I've decided just to do them - and if I fail, at least I tried it and I can try again or make a decision at least from being on the other side. As for sites - I'd definitely recommend Shutterstock to begin with - they have a great interface and it's easy to use, plus they generally let you know within a few days - I think it's taken like a week at the latest to get a yes/no answer from them. And they give pretty good feedback on one's they decide not to take so you can adjust from there. After that I'd go to Adobe. I'm actually changing my strategy this month and dropping DepositPhotos, Alamy and Pond5 - all 3 of their back end systems are - clunky - is probably the best word. And I get no sales at all from them. I'm thinking of starting up with Getty/iStock - so I'll probably cover that in my next video too. But definitely - start with Shutterstock and go from there. And remember - just build your portfolio, it's definitely not an overnight success, and the people who do really well with it, have been building portfolio's over years. So don't give up too soon. :) Best of luck.
