Welcome to The James Batton Show. Let this be a place of inspiration, landscape care, and knowledge from the trees.
I started my own horticultural journey at 19 working for Oregon State University at their horticultural and agriculture research facility. Over a career that has spanned 40 years, I have had the good fortune to learn a great deal about the health, longevity, propagation and care of plants. My experience as a certified arborist, estate gardener and landscape contractor has provided me first hand knowledge as to where a plant will thrive as well as where it fits in a well designed landscape. Simultaneously to my work in horticulture has been my work volunteering as a teacher, instructor, guide and advisor in settings amongst nature. I have had a natural draw from childhood to the way all of nature, especially trees, reflect life lessons for us all and are continually used in ancient wisdom’s teaching.

Most invasives have a place if managed well. Humans have to be the population control so they dont overtake. Speaking of which, humans are an invasive apecies themselves. We are not from the region and we overtake everything and significantly suppress the native ecosystem. But that's a choice we make every few minutes of every day, a choice that we can correct as a species. A choice to be a beneficial partner to our ecosystem instead of an invasive parasite.
Great talk on invasives. I always appreciate the knowledge you give us viewers!
How long does a stake usually need to be on the tree? I live in a very windy area but so far I’ve only had to stake a couple of apple trees…most of my new trees have been very sturdy without any ties!
I just payed a lot of money to plant Little Gem Magnolias but unfortunately they didn’t keep the root fares above the soil (turns out they didn’t know what that even meant) and thought planting deeper would help the tree because of the wind 😩
the forest is actively reclaiming the artificial landscape
Short and simple advice on trimming. Not the usual, long, drawn-out twenty minute video on tree trimming. Thank you!
100%
Great video we call that in the industry a stub cut

Jesus died on the cross for your sins he became sin so you would be forgiven!! We have all sinned but it we repent of our sins and ask Jesus who is the son of God into our hearts your forgiven. He actually says he throws away your sins into a sea of forgetfulness isnt that amazing!! He is returning soon and he wants to take you with him but most of all he wants to have a relationship with you so just say this Jesus i am a sinner wash me in your blood forgive me of my sins set me free and encounter me!! Jesus is calling you today please answer he loves you so very much
That view 😍 absolutely stunning!
I have a question. My trees are losing their bark turning black and drying. When they turn black it looks like they are burnt. It’s a new property. We have cut down at least 20 dead trees.
Thanks for sharing.
That a purple leaf plum?
@@dannulton930 thank you for your question. That is a Canadian chokecherry.
I love your tips but it would be so nice to see how you actually fix the problem. Like did you cut some of these roots off or untangle it? Were you able to save this tree?
Is that the beard of knowledge
The staking is wrong it's far to high. Should be staked at about 2 foot to allow the stem to bend and strengthen in the wind , while keeping the roots stable.
I would add more dirt around the tree trunk. 🌳 🌎
OK thanks! I waited too long to do any pruning on my lilac and mock orange bushes. So, Anyone can help me if you see this! Thanks in advance. Do I wait til they bloom next spring and start from there?
It's funny how plants only need 3 things but when people design landscapes, they always ignore one of them and act surprised when the tree doesn't do what they want.
Oh my gosh. That is so crazy that it was never taken out of the ground! I wonder how often this happens?
Gurdling restricts the flow of nutrients in the tree? And are only roots able to gurdle the tree?
Hello Sir, I've been trying to save a very large pine tree on our property here in Eastern Washington State. It's had two layers of branches trimmed from the base on up as they were hanging down in the playground area near it. The previous tenant landscaped to build the playground and dug 4ft down about 4ft away from the base of the tree at a 90° angle forming a half squar design around the base of the tree, which I'm sure highly compromised the tree. I've used baking soda lightly and small amounts of magnesium along with lots of water to help it. At this point it's got lot's of brown wilted bunches of needles, along with just a few greyish white blighted looking bunches of needles that almost resemble a burned area. Lastly the bark has turned light grey almost completely about 5ft up from the ground. Is there anything i can do to save this tree or is it a goner? Thank you very much Sir!
Hey Good People! Altering the watering patterns of trees, gardens, or lawns can have significant consequences on the surrounding landscape. Trees, in particular, are often accustomed to a specific watering regimen, especially when planted in lawns. Abruptly changing this routine, such as converting a lawn to xeriscape or flipping a park strip, can lead to long-term damage or even tree death. Key considerations when modifying watering habits include: Tree Health: Trees have developed root systems adapted to their existing watering patterns. Sudden changes can disrupt these systems, leading to stress, disease, or death. Soil Moisture: Soil moisture levels play a crucial role in plant health. Rapid shifts in watering can cause soil compaction, erosion, or nutrient leaching. Landscape Aesthetics: Changes in watering practices can also affect the overall appearance of the landscape. For example, a lawn that is suddenly deprived of water may become brown and unsightly. To minimize negative impacts when altering watering habits, it's essential to: Transition Gradually: Make changes to watering patterns gradually over time to allow trees and other plants to adjust. Monitor Soil Moisture: Regularly check soil moisture levels to ensure plants are receiving adequate water. Consider Root Zones: Be mindful of tree root zones and avoid disturbing them during landscaping changes, especially watering changes...understand where tree roots actually take up water (in the drip line/edge of the canopy), in order to correctly place drip line irrigation. Mulch: Apply mulch around plants to help retain soil moisture and reduce water evaporation. By carefully considering these factors and implementing a gradual transition, you can successfully modify watering practices without harming your landscape.
Cottonwoods are great if you want to have a tree grow very quickly in a very poor soil. After some time you can plant more desirebale tree species. In Eastern Europe cottonwoods were used to reclaim areas damaged by industry and now as Cottonwoods die of old age, Oaks, Maples, Elm's and Hardwoods are replacing them.
Music louder than the talking
Hey Good People! Cottonwood trees can be considered "trash trees" due to their rapid growth, messy nature, and invasive tendencies, but nobody can deny they are beautiful shade trees, and do offer some benefits if you want something fast growing, and hardy. Some considerations to be made before you plant, or keep self propagated cottonwoods are... Rapid Growth: Cottonwoods can grow very quickly, sometimes becoming invasive and overwhelming other plants. Messiness: They produce large amounts of cotton-like seeds and leaves, which can litter yards and clog gutters. Weak Wood: Cottonwood branches can be brittle and prone to breakage, especially during storms. Shade: Cottonwoods provide ample shade, which can help lower temperatures in yards and homes. Wildlife Habitat: They attract a variety of wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and other small mammals. Erosion Control: Cottonwoods can help prevent erosion along riverbanks and other waterways. Cottonwood trees are known for their high water requirements. In dryer climates, this can be a major concern, as they may need frequent and deep watering to thrive. Planting cottonwoods in such areas may require careful consideration of water availability and potential environmental impacts. While cottonwood trees may have their drawbacks, they can also be valuable additions to landscapes when planted in appropriate locations and managed properly.
How hard is it for you to walk by and see that… and not fix it right there and then? Gotta have permission & a contract, yeah?
These are city trees, which I legally cannot do anything to, as they are under the jurisdiction of the city arborist and parks departments. As an arborist and horticulturist I see thousands of trees everyday that are neglected in one way or another, and feel compelled to "help". However, if I tried to save every tree that I see that needed it, there simply would not be enough of me to go around. I use these trees as examples of what not to do, and put my expertise to work with people who want to care for their trees in a more intentional way. I also volunteer with local community gardens, to do things like design, or fruit tree pruning. Those efforts go further than taking suckers off of sidewalk trees the city is just going abuse, or rip out in 5 years anyway...unfortunately.
What happens if the bloom twice?
So I live in Missouri, and I have not pruned my lilac bush, which has definitely produced more branches. Should I wait until next year to prune it?
Ok so what's the fix?
Free compost
Great info 😊
What's a good variety of magnolia with scented blooms to grow in the tropics?
😂❤
Thanks for the info. Looking forward to the accompanying video.
Ugh. Unappetizing! How DO you treat the tree to prevent the worms?
So.. 20-30 years out, instead of 2-3?
I love trees. This one is beautiful! I just lost my big old tree from a couple wicked storms. One storm took out a large branch, then before I could get it pruned another storm came through and took the rest. 😢
Just curious, where are you that its an invasive species?
Dude, your beard is on point.
Ditto tree damage may I follow along?
great, jim i have a 5 year cut and is soft in middle can i spray this now, it still soft... thanks
Those are mountains with some snow. Watching those mountains could help me stay cool in the summer. All I would have to do is convince myself they were right next door.
At our local part they cut down a big beautiful tree. It gave so much shade and now it looks empty and it looks hotter. If that makes any sense. Just looks horrible.
What'd you think about root pruning using air pots?
Wow love the knife. Where'd you purchase it?
ty!
i don't think i'm eating cherries this season
