Two Bridges at Canterbury Model Railway Exhibition 18 Jan 2025
Mid-80's line siding at Two Bridges on the erstwhile Southern Region of British Rail.
Caught up with my favourite current exhibition layout at Canterbury show. Looks good with all that 1980's blue and just a touch of newer liveries.
NB. This is NOT my layout - that's another Andy Howard (clever bloke).

8 Bulleid Pacifics in action, glorious countryside, promising timetable of workings. What could go wrong? Quite a lot as it happens - weather was dull and windy and then the timetable fell apart through no fault of their own. I stuck it out for what its worth but, unless you were there on Saturday putting up with it, there are much better vids out there probably taken on the Friday and Sunday. ...

OVERPRICED BRITISH STONE AGE MODELS ? Do wish the "Brits" would get rid of those dumb toy train set couplings which prevent proper realistic close coupling. The models I use (Japanese outline) all come with built in "Flexi coupling" and real life functioning couplings, so the corridor connections can almost touch (1mm gap MAX). And then expand going through sharp curves proportionately with the sharpness of the curve. Indeed Japanese outline "N" Gauge is better detailed than British "OO", and has all sorts of technology built in, still totally unknown in Britain it seems. Such as illuminated Rotating Destination Blinds, 5 Pole Skew armature, double flywheel drive mechanisms (with real life smooth inertia control). Scale working real life couplings with auto uncouple control. Traction tyres guaranteeing massive power even on 1 in 50 gradients. Even "Clip Out Quick Clean" motor bogies. And a Japanese "N" Gauge Tr-Bo Electric loco with all those facilities and more still only costs around £50. And in virtually British "OO" scale (Japanese 1:80) around £110 ! As there are more Railway Modellers in Japan than the whole of the rest of the World 3.4 times over. This keeps the prices down, and ensures technologies, not found anywhere else on the planet !!!
I take your point. But the beauty of this layout is the use of a lot of models that were made around the same time the layout is set. I had 4 Lima class 33s in the 1980s. Not only is it nostalgia for the real thing but also playing trains at home. This layout shows that 40 year old tooled models can still stand on their own merit compared to modern hyper detailed (and eye wateringly expensive) versions with a bit of detailing and careful painting.
@@andyhoward1001 Many of those Models were not available in the 1970-80's ! In those days Hornby simply churned out junk toys, not Models. Since the late 1980's you can thank Sandakan Hong Kong, and since the late 1990's PIKO (ex East German company with a new plant in Canton China) for Hornby's current locomotive Range. Roco (Austria) for Hornby's absurd Code 100 track, (which Roco would never use themselves) and it seems also Roco (Vietnam plant) for some of the other accessories ! So I'm fully aware of who makes what all across the Planet. As I also used to be a European Major Importer, Wholesaler & Retailer of all the Japanese main ranges ! There's nothing wrong with your exhibition layout. If I had to be really "nit picky" I'd say minimum radii on your layout is too low, so will cause one or two minor operational issues. What I'm pointing out is simply that the best current "British Outline" from any manufacturer is effectively a "Dumbed Down" version of what's available in other markets. So Japanese Outline "N" Gauge ranges 30years ago, had technologies included in their models then, that the British are still totally unaware of. Such as "Illuminated rotating destination blinds; High grade 5 pole skew armature motors, with double flywheel drives; "Clip Out Quick Clean" motor bogies; Real life scale working couplings (Buckeye & Scharfenburg); Interior Seating that changed with the direction of the train as per real Japanese trains. And on steam locos, proper "Reversing Valve gear". To name just a few ! And their models usually retail at between 25 & 40% of current British prices ! The Model Railway Market size in Japan, as I had to explain to the Directors of Marklin 20 years ago. Is bigger than the whole of the rest of the World put together, 3.4 times over. Indeed TOMIX the Worlds biggest producer (a subsiduary of TOMY TEC), has an annual turnover in BILLIONS of US$ Dollars. Something that flabbergasted the Marklin Directors at their annual Model & Hobby Tradefair in Nurnberg at that time. (The Marklin family run that tradefair annually which is the Worlds Biggest with over 13,000 Manufacturers present). Indeed I used to gleefully take a handful of ignorant British Model shop owners to that show, annually, to wake them up to the fact they were all playing "Island Monkey" !
@@andyhoward1001, well said , nice layout and LIMA 33s
Lovely to see someone still happy to use Lima locos and rolling stock. I also like the way they have blended the European HO gauge rolling stock in by forming it into one train and using an open load to make it harder to see the height difference between the 00 gauge loco and the H0 stock.
And that one! 😂
I was there as well!
I was there!
Ha ha. Thanks for the sarcastic comment. Very funny Mrs Howard (my wife). You enjoyed it really… at least Rodney being named Dave (made my day as well).
Some good footage there Andy, thanks for posting. We were there Sunday which was not quite so crazy busy (a mate told me who did the riding on Saturday and photographed Sunday) I'm not sure how many trips we took! 'Lots'! There seem to be a lot watching, and I hope they contributed in some way one way or another, I dread to think how much this show cost, and being a long-time member and supporter of the SR, I know what the situation is like.
Thanks for watching. We bought a ticket intending to ride some late afternoon trains but didn’t use it as it all went to pot in the afternoon and we didn’t want to get stuck!
Very nice!! Subscribed now!!
Thank you
Hi buddy just subbed, came over from Barnabas shout-out show 👍

Great video! I was there Sunday and had an enjoyable day.
Thank you. It was very atmospheric.
Great video. The SE I loosely model but love the area. Hi from NZ
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. Tonbridge is a popular spot to watch trains. Pity there wasn’t a lot going on this day. Cheers Andy
Great video Andy
Thanks 👍
Has 70013 moved anywhere in the last 10 years?
Super video! Great captres! Big LIKE
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video. You want to try and have a northern summer! Preston had 303% of its normal July rainfall! How long where you at Eastleigh this day? You make it look busy but when I go, there are long boring periods of no freight. Any more than 4 per hour is a bonus!! Thanks for the vid 👍🏻
Thanks Phil. I was probably there 6 or 7 hours so not massively busy. By the way, I know all about Preston Summers - I grew up there. That’s why I moved “down South”

Thank you
Why so many class 60s & 67s sitting Idle rusting away , what a sad sight.
Awesome video!!
Thank you. Not quite as good over here compared to the monster locos you get to see every day though.
WATCHING THIS BRING BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES OF THE TIME I LIVED AND WORKED IN MARCH
Thank you

Hola. Gracias.
Top quality
Thank you
For me extremely interesting. Fine that in Britain so many lines are non-electrified. A pity that so many locos are out of work. Class 66 dominates in picture and sound. Greetings from Gdynia, Poland.
Thank you Wojciech. Yes, class 66 dominates freight here, but I believe some Freightliner ones escaped to 🇵🇱
@@andyhoward1001 Thanks for the answer. There are presumably approx. 40 Class 66 locos in Poland: Freightliner PL and DB Cargo Polska.
@@wojciechzalewski6648 cool gbrf are putting 66 engines in 56s to make the 69 lol so they have more things of the strength without buying more
Toton was based on COAL. What came of the early EWS plans to double/triple business?
An accurate reflection of the UK now, bleak and rotten!
Awesome images with trains and nice places! Good work, Andy! MEGA LIKE Greetings from Dublin Andrew
Thank you
DB Schenker heaven, love it, thanks for sharing.
Thank you
@ 7:31: terrible sight, but I am glad that some of the 60s are getting restored for DC Rail
Thanks for comprehensive coverage of Toton Depot. Have you any idea of the Colas 70 working Taking the Crewe line at Stenson Jctn ?
Thank you. The 70 is running from British Steel Redcar to a recycling facility at Longport (recycled into road stone I guess). I saw the same train the day before and it took the Birmingham line.
@@andyhoward1001 Thanks Andy for the info. Regards Les
Great footage huge stock of class 60 at the back of the yard these look like there going for the scrap ? Lots of 66 67 EWS livery I presume these will be repainted to DB colours at some point… GBR Colas use DB yard facilities or sub hired in ? Also spotted Royal train 67 at the very back 👍
Thank you. The stored 60s have been there for years. Who knows what the plans for them are.
So much stock of 60s looks like grave yard 😢 can’t believe how big the site is and very full up not much going on a lot of static locomotives everywhere thanks for sharing really good mixture of freight trains 👍
You must have been in seventh heaven when you took this video!!
Sure was.
I regularly walk round the whole depot and there are some interesting vantage points in your vid that I can't fathom such as 20:22. Are you on the A52 here because the traffic is quite loud.
Hi there. Yes, all views taken from public access land. The views later on are from the Brian Clough Way over bridge. There’s a lay-by on the Derby bound carriageway and you can walk up to the bridge.
@@andyhoward1001 Many thanks, I'd discounted the road so I've been racking my brains as to where for example people take shots similar to this on Flickr and tried walking along a track 90 degrees from the canal towpath where the A52 crosses the canal and battled through undergrowth to try to find a way up the embankment which lead me nowhere lol.
@@andyhoward1001 Hiya Andy, hope all is well with you.... Do me a massive favour though bud... Don't park in the middle of the lay-by though please.... Its where I park my articulated truck, if I'm up that way and wander down the road to the bridge with notebook, pen and binoculars at the ready.... Thank you so much...
love 072 gotta be one of my favourite bullieds from her time at swanage, her and 34010 "sidmouth" got to be my favourite ones
Working well within its limits even going up Tenterden Bank.
Thanks for sharing this Andy, what a great shot coming round Orpins Curve and that three cylinder beat. I must get out to the KESR in the next couple of weeks and take a trip behind 257 Squadron. They did not seem to being pushing the engine but then with a five coach train there is no need, lots of pent up power.
Awesome images with trains and lovely places! Excellent video! Thumbs Up & Subscribe Greetings from Dublin Andrew

Thank you. Was a great few hours.
Where are all the class 69s currently, as when I went recently none of them were there?

You’re not wrong 😊
good video

Andy, It was nice to meet you and your wife briefly at the end of the platform at Romsey on Saturday. Great video footage. I didn’t realise that you were the fella behind the Two Bridges layout, very inspirational from the NSE period. Regards Nigel (158 Driver)
Hope you like your vid. It’s another Andy Howard who has the excellent Two Bridges I’m afraid - wish it was me as that’s my favourite region/era.
