it's non fidelity that make those amps stand out,it imparts a character and also owes to the aged components, especially the speaker diaphram.Being cathode biased, moderately filtered and relying on a field coil speaker they "sing" when you crank them, they compress in a pleasing way. Those straight cones also break up early and contribute to the tone.Octal tubes play a role too.Nice amp...

Compelling! Complex! I like it! What pickups are in that 335? They sound like a banjo sometimes . Thanks for the post! JB

jazznerd remember much of what you're hearing is the amp.If you ever plugged into a tattered pre late-60's amp you'll know what I mean.I plugged into a cheaply made 50's amp (2-6v6 made by Vega) and there is not a $2000 + Victoria or Matchless amp that can reproduce that response and tone. Not without the mileage anyhow! It was but 25lbs of pressboard but smoked any boutique amp,at least in smoothness and depth of tone. There was not a harsh tone anywhere in that amp no matter the setting.

Thanks for your reply. I build tube amps, so I know exactly what you are saying. I could build an exact copy of one of the old amps, but it would never sound the same as one that had years of play on it. Your playing is intellectual, yet tasty. Happy new year!
