Mannheim had its dark days, assult, threatening rape and dumping in black forest 40 degree for non compliance (no way creep) got ride home, girl hit on head in 2nd floor bedroom(climbed in window) racial threats and young guy threw himself in front of train , he was alright, first time we ever saw him sober❤❤❤May God have mercy
Two separate teenage boy runaways. One got rehab the other ended up in Holland prison for drugs. Friend visited in 1970 said no one would go to guest house on German economy and have a beer, in 6 months time all the kids had started taking drugs 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Girl got raped on pool table in teen club, I got crouch grabbed by black guy who pulled a knife at highschool and got deport stateside a month later. Little grade school black kid ,I never saw before started throwing rocks at me, was rescued by black teen club manager ( he later called in the favor and I got organize a bus trip to a dance . Promised one dance each to 2 nice black guys who signed up. Band changed fast dances to slow ones, laughing, . Very nice 2 dances,bmy arms around their protesting neck(they didn't want a race riot, I'm white, 1968 scandalous) I 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The draft had been reinstated, the guys were wound up tight. One kicked in car headlight and had surgery another slammed hand into wall, broke his arm after major all important discussion with girlfriend about the shape of their kitchen table(knights of round table had round) someday in the future table,1968 and 1969. I wonder how many had to go to jungles of war😢😢😢😢😢❤❤❤May God look out for them
Glad the place got fixed up with playgrounds, rabbits, deer, Laundromat, fast food places and paint, the horrid gray buildings fixed up.😂😂😂😂
1968 mannheim, gray buildings, cold, dreary. We moved from New Mexico where the sky was bright blue that reached all the way to God, felt lonelylike low hanging gray sky could separate me from God.14 years old female, missed 100 pages of algebra, a month of school moving. Ten club brightened my life, always someone to hangout with, strange ,people come and go often never to be seen again, and yet we didn't seem to notice. Teen club had dances , snack bar and teenagers only hangout room with juke box and footsball table(we girls cheated, rolled those handles and poop Goal, great fun🎉🎉🎉
1968 the clothes selection for teenagers was dismal , as was the room itself. Shorts for summer finally came in , in August, 2 weeks later the command decided to outlaw the wearing of shorts, too revealing. My sister , m😅 and a few other girls braved the Germany economy to buy very pretty dresses
I moved from BFV in 1990. I moved to Mannheim from Frankfurt in 1988. When the P.X. closed was there still a Stars & Stripes right next door?
I lived for short time in Washington street i whose 11 years old. My dad whose in Vietnam war 1966 US Army Prupelheart with Active and Reserve duty 12 years. Dad whose deployed from Oklahoma to BFV Mannheim, I whose born 1965 Schweinfurt Dad whose station there Airborne base I'm a Military child serviced with my Dad My Mom is German.

I was in Mannheim (D Co 5/77th Armor) from 86 to 88. I remember the German seamstress (PX concessionaire) who would sew on uniform patches and hand out little bottles of Jägermeister to the new arrivals. Was the best assignment I ever had. We trained like hell in the 80s (getting ready for the Russians to come through the Fulda Gap) but when we weren't training, we were having a heckuva time exploring Germany.
I spent time here as a child from 69-71. I saw that playground in the video and it made me laugh. Back in the day it was all concrete and steel baby. A fellow could get hurt and did I. LOL. It seems like a whole other life and so long ago and I still miss it. Silly I guess, but I remember a tight knit community that cared for one another and helped each other through thick and thin. Anyone growing up an Army brat knows this all too well. I have always felt sorry for civilian families never getting to experience life as we did and getting to see the world as it truly was. I wouldn't trade my memories for gold. Thanks for posting!!

My worked at the commissary, bookstore, and PX when we were stationed there from 1994 to end of 1996. Soooo many memories visiting my mom at work. We lived right next to the high school on Columbus Strasse! Ugh I miss those simple days. So glad I got visit BFV in 2010/2011 when I was stationed in Vilseck. Drove all the way there to visit those old stomping grounds it closed.
Fabulous video and soundtrack. Made me so homesick for my time at BFV and Mannheim, even though I was so young. Attended MAES from 1956 to 1960. Thank you for putting this work together.

We went to MAES together. I was in the 6th grade in 1956 and spent 7th and 8th grade at the high school. My father worked in the dental clinic at the dispensary and we lived across from the clinic on Washington Strasse. I woke up to the sound of revelry and went to bed with taps as we were close to the tank motor pool. Was that the 67th Armor with the bison? I do not remember BFV being so large. The commissary, PX, and gas station were small. Many happy memories!

And I still have a Red Sports coat I bought from the English shop in the Exchange. And would you believe it still fits!!!

96-99. I lived in building F on ColumbusStrasse. Mannn soooo many wonderful memories of Mannheim. I’ll forever cherish. Life bonding memories that were formed and will never be forgotten.

Our family lived in BFV (Columbus) from 89-92 and loved it. I worked at the Shoppette. Our son was born in Heidelberg, in 90.
And my son was born in Mannheim in 2003
Sad to see. I lived in the building directly in front of the px parking lot across from the gas station from 94-96. Best place to be stationed.
Wow! Memories from 84-85 272nd MPs Coleman Barracks. Sad to see we’ll never see it again. Certainly hope the German government puts the property to some good use.😥

My dad was the 1st sgt of the Coleman stockade those years.

Bought my first Leica 35mm camera at that PX back in 69-71 after a year in Nam. Begin a 50 year career in photography. 377th Heavy Trans. at Turley Barracks. Beautiful Europe!
my husband was in 377 Trans from 1988 to 91 it was on spinelli barracks then!! waited for him to come home from desert storm with the great people left behind from 377 Trans Co. it was a great time!!
How many times did I go to the PX to purchase Germany candies and Christmas items to send home to family...too many to count. It was good to see the video to refresh my memories. Ty -
I been watching this videos because I'm homesick. My mom was german and I grow up with the best of both worlds. I just moved 13 years to USA. But there was once so much life always seen someone walking around on the weekends BBQs. Good memories and not even had any bad once
What is shown as the PX was the commissary for the majority of the existence of BFV. What was the PX was shown in this video now a fast food store. The changing of BFV over the decades is quite interesting to see.
Great video, sad that the americans are no longer in mannheim and heidelberg 😪 Once I was with a friend in the PX (taco bell / Popeyes) in the BFV...

This brings back so many memories. I was stationed with the 295 Aviation Regiment at Coleman Army Airfield between '87 and '89. I remember the construction when the PX was doubled in size. So sad.

Blue I grew up in Schonau. Right outside of Coleman on the other side of the Autobahn (A6).
@@schonau1969 Don't believe I've been to Schonau, but have been in Sandhofen and went to Mannheim pretty often.
Blue you have been to Schonau, it's been many years. When you come out of the main gate by the church, keep going straight under the bridge (Autobahn). The apartments on the left hand side, that's Schonau. At one time or another, you must of taken the Strassenbahn ( tram) to go to Mannheim. That neighborhood is called Schonau. Thank you for your service!
Blue ~ '76-'80, Also 2/13th Inf, 8th ID. I remember riding different busses until the end of the line, going to guesthouses, Jagermeister, Asbach Uralt, and the wonderful hashish.

I lived there as a little boy...1968-1972...I was is Scout Troop 527...cub scouts, webelo and Boy Scouts...Plus, little league and bowling...swapping comic books
1968 knock at the door of apt. Young man going state side, going home had a 2 ft stack of comic books he gave me for free.nThose saved me from 12 hour rode trips across Europe. Yes , read everyone and passed them on to young man in stairwell when I got to go home. Thank you guy with the kind heart❤

We were there 2002-2006. Went to Iraq at that time. Lived on Columbusstrasse right next to the High School. We watched all the buildings get updated to new. Great times I will never forget.
I was at Coleman Barracks 2/13th Inf 71 & 72 I hated that Godforsaken place, had nitemares for years after leaving there!
