Sing the song in your head and tap your foot or shake your booty. If you can dance, rhythm most likely comes naturally to you and you don’t have to think about it. There is a deeper meaning and statement in the previous remark that some may pick up and totally know what I’m saying 🤟🏽😁✌🏽

Who looks at their hands or the keyboard when they’re playing? This would make sight reading music nearly impossible! Note that there are also numerous accomplished blind concert pianists. You just have to learn the landscape by feel.

Thanks for your interesting videos. :) What would be your recommendation to push a piece really in the mental memory/mind/brain when learning it by heart instead of playing it automatically via muscle memory only (what sometimes happens to me)? Naming the notes when practicing? Transpose the piece and play it in other keys?

100% agree on the importance of good fingering, not only for tone/phrasing but very much also to avoid subtle muscle tensions that can lead to long-term injuries. One caveat though about watching other pianists (professional or amateurs) play the same piece and take fingerings from that: I would only use it as a starting point, never just adopt it wholesale. Our physical bodies are all different, and what works for one person in regards to fingering might well be unsuitable or even completely impossible for another. In my view, it's therefore important to give oneself permission to come up with one's own fingerings and to deviate from those in scores or how this or that famous pianist does it. This can also involve redistributing notes between the left and right hand or in extreme cases even cheating by omitting a less important note here or there, especially in thick chords. More work, for sure, but I find it can be oddly satisfying and liberating to experiment, find what works best for oneself, noticing subtle differences in hand movements, muscle activity, body position, etc. Core principle remains fluidity in movement along the whole fingers-arms-body axis and avoiding unnecessary tension.

It is so hard to play slow until you listen to a recording of how bad it sounds played fast and sloppy….. I live in an apartment and use Pianoteq and a 88 key weighted keyboard…..Pianoteq automatically saves every note i have played since I purchased it last may and when you playback you can see the keystrokes.

Good ideas. I'm learning Ravel's Sonatine. The first movement I can sort of play, but my playing is sloppy. Maybe it's a bit above my level. But I really want to learn it well. I love being connected to it. What a cosy room you're in by the way.

Focusing on melodies as if they were composed for slow tempo may help. Slow practice os very important, thank you for sharing your experiencie

Just came across your channel.. Great teaching ! clearly from being concert pianists 😀😀 I started trying to play Mozart K 414 - 1st movement - pages 1&2 and also 2nd movement - after watching your video - went to 1/2 speed on Murray Periah ‘s fantastic version on YT .. so my tempo matched with a metronome is at 65 .. Murray plays at 130 to the quarter note I think …This is helping a lot .. my level is sort of beginner with - lots and lots of gaps on music - just a hobby - no formal training at all ..but I have a Steinway Essex at home from just a year ago ..any thoughts on how my journey could be speeded up .?.. yes I am past 60 but can still learn complex stuff when I went to grad school 35 yrs ago …

This works great for triplets against eights however i couldn't get it to work for triplets against sixteenths because then the thirds aren't in the middle of the sixteenths but a third after/before them making it hard. I kind of got it to work by first only playing half of the sixteenth making it a third vs. Eigth and then adding the rest however it's very inconsistent. Do you have any tips for that? Thank you in advance

Well what I noticed was your playing your eyes were on the keyboard I was told an accomplished musician reader looks at the music their playing and don’t need to look at the keyboard to see where they are they have accomplished where the keys are , your comments are appreciated

I really wish people would stop talking about slow playing and repetition as if they are sufficient. For those of us who are not naturally talented, they aren’t enough. As an example, when you play that leap, your arm goes lower for the thumb and lands higher when you play the chord with the fingers. No matter how much you do slow practice, the opposite-leaving the thumb with a high arm and trying to play the chord with a low arm-will never work. You naturally move well, so slow practice begets improvement. The piano translates movement into sound. If you don’t like the sound, the movement is wrong. Correct movement = correct notes. I used to have awful technique, even made it through a masters with sloppy playing. Now I study with Robert Durso and my playing has reached new heights, because he knows how to analyze movement and teaches me the same.

Rachmaninoff practised at very, very slow tempo. Go even slower than you think. It will help tons. I would only add to your excellent advice: it is useful to keep a note of your tempo (using a metronome), so you can increase tempo gradually as you become more confident and you are playing the section almost always successfully. You can do it without a metronome, but without some guidance and a metric to check, it’s easy to forget over time your practice tempo and how you have improved. By keeping a note of your tempo, you can also add a little bit of challenge (but not too much) to your practice more easily. You will be able to find your limit - the fastest you can play the section before errors arise consistently. When you find your limit, concentrate your practice at a tempo just below that, where you are very confident. Keep trying to push that limit to where it needs to be. I find that helps me learn with slow tempo the most efficiently.

Very good advice. I had to slow my playing so much to get it right, the last note I played was a year ago. I'll play the next note now. Damn... got it wrong.

That’s so funny how I’m taking a short break from my pianos session right now because I’m frustrated from my sloppy playing! Thank you for advice, I keep playing closer to a tempo that I keep messing up. Slow practice is a little boring I guess! I’ll use these tips as in I will resume my practice now haha..

A new piano to stop playing sloppy?

I've been notified that the only way to improve the sound of my playing is to lift me off the bench and replace me with another player...

Good evening, I have been watching and watching the different ways to ameliorate by practicing slow and medium. And yes, I recorded, thus the thing I noticed is that my left hand seems to have a stronger and harder touch. I think that this is because I do like the bass line (bass clef) a lot. Are there exercises to diminish or to soften the right hand playing the bass clef. Thaks anayway for the wonderfull explanations in your videos. Best regards, Norbert
