Not A Proper Classic

Welcome to Not A Proper Classic!
Here you'll find videos on working on, living with, as well as loving (and hating) life with my C124 (W124 coupe) 1993 Mercedes 220ce.
As it was only 29 years old when I got it, apparently it's not a proper classic car.
There may be guest appearances from a Nissan Figaro and other cars crossing past the Not A Proper Classic workshop.

Rough running pt.10 - will a new MAF fix it? | Mercedes 220CE W124 coupe | Not A Proper Classic
With the high idle/rough running persisting on the 1993 Mercedes 220CE W124 coupe, I try more parts darts and fit a new mass airflow sensor (MAF). Has this finally fixed it? I honestly don't know...

The old #mercedes #w124 220CE still isn't running right. To go with the high idle it's had since the replacement throttle body, the lumpy idle and rough running has returned. Is it the MAF? Following the advice of the hive mind of the #Facebook owners' groups, I try a MAF test.

Hello, as @the1beard mentioned, wiring hardness is comon problem on M111 engines. Maybe your new hardness has some defect from manufacture, or sometimes aftermarket components just don't work well. I had this engine too, and my problem was exastly same, so I would bet it is problem with wiring. If you also didn't checked throttle body, do it. It can be dirty inside, but mostly I would be concerned about wiring inside that body. It has the same problem, and lot of people just replace engine wiring, and forget to check this wiring inside throtle body. Fingers crossed, you will fix it surely
Think the wiring is good. Looks to be of a high quality and the place came recommended. Other have also used it too. Could be the throttle body again as the required one was changed. But thinking it’s a vacuum or air leak at the moment.
there are cleaning sprays available, they usually work, much cheaper than a new MAF
Thanks for the tip!

Did u try cleaning your M.A.F.S befor buying a New one ??? The idea in the end looks ok
Don’t know you could clean them. I’ve still got it. How do you do it?
@@Beechams1042mad sensor cleaner spray can
I had one of these for years .. was never able to get the idle issue fixed In the end I believe it was down to the electrical loom that degrades on these cars as they were made of chocolate I’d never get a Mercedes again .. give me a BMW of the same era any day … or even a modern BMW today .. Mercedes lost the plot .. Garbage imho
It’s definitely not the wiring harness as I replaced it with a newly made one from Si-leck auto who also make racing harnesses. Agree it was a stupid decision to do the bio wiring. But the rest of the car is solid. Doubt I’d get a newer Mercedes. But then again most new cars don’t do anything for me.
@@Beechams1042 Get an E39 BMW you won’t regret it
I’m tempted. But also keen on a Land Rover defender. Or something JDM. Basically dont know!
@@Beechams1042 Old Defenders are money pits imho JDM always rust in the UK parts are scarce A well-looked-after BMW with an N52 engine is good for 250,000 + miles and parts are available On a budget get a big Citroen or Peugeot they are not as bad as people make out .. except in the image space
V6 Citroen c6 would be tempting
be sure to check the tightness of the pipes under the intake manifold
Thanks for the tip
Only bosch and pierburg
I didn’t want to spend £400 on a Bosch one. And magnetti marelli is a brand I’ve heard of and had decent reviews. Fingers crossed!
@@Beechams1042 new pierburg is 100 €. I changed mine, but was nothing better. The problem was IAT senzor in the intake air pipe for 11 €. It was reading faulty temp. of the intake air. At 20 C ist measures -10 C. Cheers !
@ I’ll take a look at that too

I prefer the old E class. W124 is one of the best cars Mercedes made. All the new Mercedes look the same and they look so similar that you thought that blue car was an E class when it actually is a C class 😆. I don’t blame you, I get confused sometimes as well as I can’t tell which one is which
i'll take the new one, you're gonna be spending the same amount for gas, repairs, and maintenance as the old one lol
Not really. The W124 would actually be more expensive overall, but would last an eternity and be very reliable. The W205 is the lowest quality C class ever made, and wouldn’t even be worth keeping for that long.
On mine, (1995 220CE) a combo of maf problems, play in the throttle body and degraded wiring caused this type of thing. I had a brilliant racing spec loom made from Si-Lek in kent, including the wiring for the original throttle, a new Maf from ECP made a big difference. ultimately I scored a new Throttle body from fleabay at a bargain price, and the combo of them all was a rock solid tickover, and total reliability. I did note the problem was worse in the cold and damp, and I think that was the exposed elements of the loom getting damp.
I had a lion from them too. Did a great job. :) They also did my throttle body but that was swapped out twice by a local specialist and a replacement put in. I’ve got a MAF coming so hoping that’ll make a difference.
Sound is shite
I know. I didn’t have a microphone. Hopefully i will next time.
Chinese...state owned... Buy one if you support China.
Thought it was Chinese as I’d never heard of it before…
You Should Allways have the Engine Running when using the Pump ,You then have 14,7 V from your Alternator, and the pump work's much faster 😅
Good to know. Although this pump fell apart one or two more uses after I filmed this. The plug but basically disintegrated. You get what you pay for I guess…

It’s an e36! So you’re right. 90s
goofy ahh car
Not necessarily. None of my cars leak anything on the ground.
I do love a Defender and especially in a commercial grade! To me, the more basic, the better!
What a scam
What’s it got to do with you if an energy company is using a plug in Charger
Yeah because they’re the only ones that can afford paying almost £1kwh - this countries charging infrastructure is a modern day scam.
EVs only make sense if you can charge at home with an off peak tariff. And do short journeys to save wear on an ICE car before it’s warmed up.
Peace of junk
😨 it’s not perfect but I like it. :)

I have this little blue micra
i knew this when i saw 2 6ft 120lb now objects to dispose of, was a great car too bad it had to be torched i think about that car on occasion
yes, without that spring the throttle body does not read the idle position 0, because there is a micro switch which in your case was not pressed without the spring. Clean the throttle body and if necessary adjust the accelerator cable play by turning the black threaded knob.
adjusting the cable does not improve idle but on the other hand improves driving and response to the pedal.
I'll take another look and adjust the cable. What's best to clean the throttle body? Clutch and brake cleaner?
No better to use a specific throttle body cleaner for the type of dirt and grime it needs to remove
to lubricate the various joints of the accelerator (after having cleaned them well and degreased) I use a drop of ATF oil sprayed on an oiler, a drop is enough for each one, ATF penetrates and remains on the surfaces, anti-rust and unblocking, the best!
I love old lotus cars.
