Hey! Loving your videos. I'm considering Kansai Gaidai next semester and have a couple questions if you've got time: Was it pretty easy to make friends? Was it pretty easy to to join any circles or clubs? Were they with other international students or Japanese? Did the structure/workload allow for ample time to explore the area and go fun places? Despite (seemingly) spending a lot of time with other international students, would you say your Japanese still improved significantly? Thanks!
@@bengrijalva1051 Hi! Thanks! I have a lot more upcoming videos too. That’s great, Kansai Gaidai is amazing! I’ll answer your questions in bullet points hahah - It was really easy to make friends and if you sit in common areas of the dorm and on campus (CIE) you can be making new friends all semester! - Some clubs and circles are easier to join than others. There was an activity fair where you could meet clubs and look up contact info in a book (for clubs that didn’t have a table). A lot of international students joined volleyball, soccer, flower arrangement, outdoor club, and martial arts. I joined a badminton circle & the archery club, both were predominantly Japanese students. I tried joining dance and tennis too but it was difficult; like for dance, they already had groups formed and were practicing for upcoming events. Some clubs prefer Japanese students since they’ll be a member for years and it’s common for Japanese students to only be dedicated to 1 club. Circles are more easy going! - I had a lot of free time because I had no classes on Tuesdays & Thursdays. I think the schedule + workload depends on the classes you choose and what you’re used to! Compared to my major, my workload at KGU was really light (I didn’t take any classes for my major in Japan), but a lot of my friends said their workload was normal. Either way, everyone had free time on weekends and a lot of people didn’t have classes after period 1 on Fridays! - That’s true, in my vlogs so far it’s mostly international students. Partially because the Japanese students’ academic calendar started 3 weeks after us! Also I think international students are more motivated to go sightseeing hahah. But I had a lot of Japanese friends too, especially in the clubs, my dorm unit and some close friends from my classes (Japanese students who are preparing to study abroad will take classes with international students). My Japanese improved so much while I was there! You have to speak Japanese in your daily life pretty much everywhere outside of school. I didn’t know a lot of Japanese when I first arrived so I was level 1 but by the end of the semester I could talk about a lot of things ranging from my childhood to my future life goals! My Japanese class was very fast paced! Good luck with your application! Kansai Gaidai is a great school and the location is amazing too!
hi, how long did you spent in Kinkaku-ji and toei studio park? thanks
@@chichiesdiary About 30 minutes at Kinkaku-ji and 2.5 hours at Toei Studio Park! There were no crowds at Toei Studio Park so we didn’t have to wait in lines for anything, and there was a lot to do!
@katieeveleth ok thanks..because I'm planning an itinerary with my mom.. I'm making sure that we will visit only 2 to 3 places per day because of my senior mom.
@@chichiesdiary Have a nice trip! Nijō Castle in Kyoto is also a great place to visit! You can walk inside the castle and in the gardens around it. It’s all flat! It takes at least 1 hour to see everything and there’s a cafe & souvenir shop near the main gate if you want to stay longer! At the end of next week I’ll be posting a video about it~ It’s one of my top recommendations along with Kiyomizu-dera, but Kiyomizu is up a big hill
@katieeveleth i'll wait for your nijo castle video.. but is it better than kyoto Imperial palace?
@@chichiesdiary I haven’t been to Kyoto Imperial Palace before so I’m not sure… maybe there’s some other RUclips videos comparing them!
Where did you meet your friends? I might study at kansai next semester and I’m extremely nervous
@@Sabrina-cs5yk I met them at Kansai Gaidai! It was really easy to make friends!! A lot of international students didn’t know anyone before arriving in Japan, and the Japanese students were really nice! In my first week I became friends with a lot of people who lived on my floor, some friends I met in the lobby of the dorm, and I also joined a club that organized big group trips to Kyoto & Osaka. You’ll always be meeting new people, especially if you sit in the common areas!

Hi hi! I don’t usually make comments and not even sure if you’ll reply, but I start university next year and I wanted to know the ins and outs of the program. Is it expensive and do you need to be outstanding in your classes? Is it selective about who gets to go abroad and who should I talk to about going? Sorry if these questions are a little nonsensical, I’m just a worry wart 😆 Thanks for any help and great video!!
@@Hikarito619 Hi! If you will be coming from and international country and want to go to Japan for a study abroad, you should talk to your academic advisor when you start university! They can help you organize your course requirements (for your major and other general education classes) so you can go to Japan and stay on track with your classes. Every university is different, my school usually sends 6 students per semester to KGU but I don’t know how many people apply because there are so many country options that people can choose! I went abroad in the fall which is not as popular as the spring, maybe that helps too. Every university probably has a different GPA requirement to be able to go, maybe 2.5 or 3.0 is the lowest at my school. Usually you have to pay your normal tuition price but if you apply as an independent student you could pay the KGU tuition price. Your academic advisor will have more information! But daily life in Japan is really cheap!! Like lunch is ~$3 and dinner was $5-10. The dorm is cheaper than the US too! I hope you are able to go!! Good luck starting university!
@ Thank you so much!!! I’m looking forward to going as soon as I can and you were a lot of help!
@@Hikarito619 no problem! If you end up going later in university, that’s also ok! You can save up and travel around Japan on the weekends or buy a lot of souvenirs☺️
Thanks for the vid Katie! Can you tell us more about the prices you had to pay for the dorm and how much you spend there in your time studying in Japan?
@@ceey3730 Hi! Thanks for watching! I just checked the pricing sheet that they sent me. Staying in YUI for 1 semester was ¥230,000 (~$1,550) and it has a ¥30,000 deposit (~$200) which we got back at the end of the semester. The other housing option is one of the seminar houses which can be between ¥120,000-¥200,000 per semester (plus the same deposit) depending on the room style you choose. There’s also a home stay option but I don’t have information on it🏡 I didn’t keep an organized record of how much I spent throughout the semester but it was much less than I usually spend during a semester in the US. The food is really cheap in Japan; in the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch I spent ¥160-350 for a meal and cafeteria dinner was ¥520. Eating off campus was between ¥120-1,200 depending on where I went/how much food I got! Some of my friends were given special cards from their home universities to get meals for free (up to a certain $ amount), my school doesn’t do that but that would be nice to have! Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe are all really close to the school! The station I usually went to in Kyoto was ¥370 yen for 1 way and the one in Osaka was ¥540. I did a lot of weekend trips around Japan and roundtrip flights can be $200 but the Shinkansen is a little cheaper (the school also offers 2 student discount sheets for it). I think the amount you spend is up to what you want to do! I did a lot of traveling, shopping and club activities, but some people were happy to stay around school/Osaka & Kyoto.
can you attend as a freshman in college?
@@demetripapadatos8719 for a study abroad or as a full time student? There were some freshmen who were studying abroad when I was there so it’s possible!! You have to work it out with your home university. Each university has their own process to apply for study abroads and they might suggest a specific semester/year of school for you to go depending on your major. Sometimes they will also recommend specific universities/countries with courses that fit your major. Maybe you can set up a meeting with your academic advisor and ask! If it’s possible to go to KGU or Japan, I recommend it!!
Hiii! I'm going to kgu this year with some friends and we wanted to know like if the internet connections is good and if during the orientation days they give you some tips to things like credit card or which telephone service use. Thanks!!!
@@daf4443 Hi!! The internet connection is great! I decided to get an international plan but there’s a few days in orientation week where you can get a good deal on a Japanese sim/e-sim!😅 (the sim card people were standing outside YUI on the grass when I was there) A few people I knew had pocket wifi as well but that wasn’t as popular. For credit cards, I recommend sorting it out before you arrive in Japan; a travel rewards card/any card with no foreign transaction fees is good so you don’t get charged extra! Also you can get a similar debit card because you’ll be going to the ATM a lot! Many places (including the KGU cafeteria) use cash☺️
Thank u for this video!! Im studying at kgu this august and im so nervous but so excited!
