Practice and improve your timing on this tune. I have not tried it at a jam session, but I have been told it is a jam "killer."

Dueling Banjos --- learning to stand up.

Learning not to use tablature and not to watch the fretboard is difficult, but learning to stand up when playing with others is worthwhile.
Cripple Creek learn to stand up

As many of you, I learned to play banjo with tablature. I am weaning myself off tablature, and now I need to learn to stand and look at the fretboard dots. It has been quite a worthwhile journey.

Always Looking at the banjo fretboard, seems to be a form of or similar to reading tablature. I want to learn to stand and play.

Drone string is out of tune. I always keep a tuner on my headstock for this exact reason. Keep up the practice friend! A metronome is super helpful too especially if you want to play with other people in a jam at some point.
Sorry but your not in tune you play ok just take clamp off it be better 😊
nice done randy!
Nice!
Cool
Nice
I love watching your progress--I'm so impressed!
Very good randy!
Thank you - I played it at a driveway concert Sunday with a local group The Red River Roses.
Very good!
Not bad. I've been playing for about 13 years or so. And i still don't stand up. Lol. Keep it up.
Now that I am playing with a group, I want to learn to stand for my breaks; thanks for the comment.
Pretty good, keep it up.
Thank You!
Nice
Thanks Bro
Good job!
Thak you! Do you play?
I did but due to stroke I don't anymore.
Very nice you are one talanted individual!
Great video! I liked the motivational tidbit at the beginning! My favorite way to practice timing on tricky songs is to practice them really slowly (at first) with a metronome. I use website-based metronomes whenever I don't have a physical one available. I like to start at about 60-80 beats per minute. After each successful run through the song, I'll bump it up 5-10 BPM. If I make too many mistakes, I'll be sure to bump it back down to a speed I can do well and practice longer at little bit a slower tempo. This always helps me bring songs up to speed in a really consistent, well-timed way. It also sort of "gamifies" the process to where I don't feel impatient or like the practice is too unstructured. :)
Sound Great
Sounds great!
I gotta get me a banjo. Love the sound
A great attempt, think I started on that one years ago, along with cripple creek.
Thank you --- Working on timing. You play it now?
@@randyfry9817 I pick now and again, and that was one of my early ones, along with 'eight more miles to Louisville'. which I think was the first, its a great starter. I sent for a few books by Tony Trischka, Bill Keith and Dr banjo, some great melodic licks there. Roanoake, Turkey in thr straw and blackberry blossom to name a few. I muddled my way'almost' through Bill Keith's 'night in Tunisia' and the very challenging 'Nola', a masterpiece when you liksten to it. There's some great online guides like 'tunefox', where you can slow down/up the tablature and play along, just revisited 'duelling banjos',.now that is fun. Beat wishes Tim.
Best version of Amazing Grace on banjo I’ve ever heard!
Thank you -- Working on it --- I like this version.
The Animals cover was done in 6/8, think triplets or a jig. You're doing it in 4/4 here. So instead of 4 notes in a beat you should play 3, the rhythm of "carrots and cabbages" instead of "lemme have a piece of chicken." So, for a roll maybe you could do Thumb Index Middle Thumb Middle Index instead of the backward-forward roll.
Interesting --- Thank you I'll try and play. Song is good and fun.
That is very good picking sir keep up the good work we enjoy it
Thanks - I have started playing w others and really see changes - For the better.
Sounds good. How long have you been playing banjo?
Hello . I have been playing with others on and off for many years. I have started getting serious and playing with others the last three years. Playing with others really accelerates learning.
Pretty damn good player, but needs a drummer or metronome to keep proper time.
Working on that. Have been a closet player for a long time. I am using an app Strum Machine to help w timing. Thanks
Great music
Now that would take me a long time to learn. Great job.
As a 80 year old banjo picker - I know the hand pain and hand issues that come with age.....in other words, my fingers and hands do not respond like they one did. My brain suffers as well :) Great job Randy Fry!
I hear you -- but even with the problems coming up in playing it is great to be able to play! Thank you
@@randyfry9817 I discovered cortisone shots! I also bought a Gold Tone AC-1 - it only weighs 3 libs and I can haul it everywhere with ease. When compared to my Arias Pro and RC R35 which weigh 4 times more I can over look the tone. It plays great for a banjo under 300. Keep posting!
@@nightskyimaging Interesting. I have a Gibson RB250 that weighs a ton. I may someday look into a lighter banjo. Thanks --- Planning to post more. Do youpost?
@@randyfry9817 No, I do not post music . I do a lot of astro imaging - I do post those on my channel. I have threatened to play some banjo, mandolin or guitar from time to time but I am afraid people may think it is a comedy act.
69th like... nice
Thank you
How do you remember all the parts to that song ! Awesome!!
There are four parts to the version I play. I started memorizing each and then put them in the order the teacher thought best. It took a long time and I am now working on playing it in a Trio I belong to. Would you like the Tab it's quite messy --- but readable
Your rendition of The Entertainer was very entertaining
Thank you. I'm working on a version with a Trio I joined. I'll put it up when we play it.
🤏🤙
Thank you
Now that's one song I've never heard on the banjo!
That is what makes it fun --- Unusual. Thank you
Beautiful!
Thank you --- I am working on a version to play with a trio I joined.
@@randyfry9817 can't wait to hear it!
