Diane Chaplin, Cellist
США
Добавлен 2 окт 2011
Cellist Diane Chaplin has been performing livestream concerts of solo cello music since 2020. She has unearthed countless gems and has discovered that the repertoire for cello all by itself is ENORMOUS. She adds to this marvelous body of work with arrangements of her own as well as new pieces that are being written for her. Each month a livestream concert is posted and significant works are sometimes excerpted. Her secondary project, "Bach Suites, Harmonized!" can also be found here on her youtube channel. Someday she plans to record Suites 4 & 5. Full bio can be found at www.cellochaplin.com

Diane Chaplin cello, with Beaverton Symphony conducted by Dwayne Corbin, Jan 26 & 28 2024. The earliest known cello concerto by a woman, this French romantic work hails from 1872. It is unclear which of the slow movements (there are 2) Jaëll intended for the work, but only fragments remain of the score for the Lento movement. This is the first performance of all four movements of the work, with...

Music for solo cello by Elaine Fine, Mina Arissian and Nancy Ives. This concert actually broadcast live to this channel, but it's over in a different section (the "live" section) so a lot of people didn't see it. I'm uploading it here and if you missed it because it wasn't where it belonged, I'd appreciate you telling me that.

This gorgeous. Thanks to @Noam for leading me here to listen.
Thanks so much Elliot!
BRAVI TUTTI! You are all SO GOOD that I'd rouse the Archbishop from his bed with the archepiscopal canopy facing clerestory windows, and have the Diocese let y'all record in a Professional Sound Studio with Engineers! (Tell him some old Jew in Acapulco suggested it)
@steveegallo3384 that's wonderful, thank you!
13:33 and ---> is just astounding... incredible! I'm still recovering!
My bad! I meant 33:15 and ---> (forward). You see... I was just so swallowed up by the performance I could not post the track time correctly - haha!)
@@PC-ld7us Thank you for listening and for your enthusiasm!
Thanks for your beautiful performances! I'm happy to see you enter the Yagling fan club. I'm not aware of anyone else playing this solo suite in the US besides you and me. I know a couple of American cellists played it in 1982 before and at the Tchaikovsky Competition, but no one since then until 2019.
@@maestroukr Thank you for listening! And I'm pretty sure it's because of you that I found that piece. I definitely want to play more of her music, I need to get a concerto happening.
@@DianeChaplinCellist She has three concertos and a Suite for cello and string orchestra, for which I created a piano reduction. Her short pieces and third cello sonata are quite attractive. I have an old Soviet edition of the sonata. The fourth sonata is really cool but very different from the third.
The Yagling is ridiculously good. I think if it were more widely known/played it could become a staple like the Hindemith or the Crumb. Great performance!! So evocative and emotional.
@@thewildcellist Thanks Corbin - it's just a mystery to me that no one even knows who she is. I totally agree that it is as good as piece as most standard rep. I'm really looking forward to learning more of her works.
What a great piece! I loved the pizz melodies in the first movement and the rhythms in the second movement. The third, I can see why you relate it to Bach! Fun fusion! The final movement…whew!! I will add this to my playlist!
It was so much like learning Bach - the same kind of bow complications and things that are not high on the instrument but are technically challenging. I'm glad you liked it, Tracey!
Hi Tracey, Thanks for your lovely comment on my music. And Dianne play it so extremely well. Cheers, Stephen
Oh my heavens, Diane, what an extraordinary performance! Thank you so much for playing my suite Magneto - so well played indeed! Cheers, Stephen
Stephen, I love this piece so much (probably you could tell).
@@DianeChaplinCellist I certainly could tell. It really rocked. And to do so like that you must have put in mega prep time. Fingers flying throughout. You got right to the heart of the piece. Thanks so much again. Sincerely, Stephen
The love and positivity here is overwhelming. God bless you all!
@@spmarrow wow, thank you.
A beautiful piece, beautifully played !
I think it works really with just cellists, don't you?
@@DianeChaplinCellist absolutely! Loved it!!
beautiful. thank you we miss these high class music ,
Thanks for listening!
Wow Amazing performance Diane. I have never heard of this Cello Concerto before. Gasper Casado sure did compose some wonderful music for Cello and to perform himself . 👏👏👏
Thanks for listening, Jan. This is a wonderful piece and I don't quite understand why it's not standard repertoire. I think it's really worthy and super rewarding to play. Hard, though!
Bravo, Diane! The McDonagh in particular is a knockout!
Thanks for listening, Allen! I'm really excited to perform your piece!
This is such an amazing piece! Thanks for playing it!
I do love playing unusual things, and this one is great! Thanks for listening.
Magnificent!
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful recital!!
Hi - thanks for checking out older videos; it makes me feel good to know they sometimes get watched!
The fanbase of Diane's livestreams is small (for now) but mighty! I particularly enjoyed this one and will be revisiting it.
Corbin, I love your enthusiasm - thanks for listening!
@@DianeChaplinCellist Diane, you're so welcome! I really appreciate your concerts and the love and care you so clearly put into them.
Excellent performance and nice tone from your cello all throughout. I’m not a big fan of Shostakovich but you held my interest.
I do think this is one of Shostakovich's best pieces. Thanks for listening!
Absolutely amazing Diane!!!
Thank you!!
This has a lot of qualities that other recordings lack; mainly being quality of sound, which other performances compensate for with speed. But I love the tritones and clashes especially that one on the A string. I might consider doing this one day. Great performance!!
Thanks, it's such a great piece, super hard but so fun to play!
Wonderful performance, Shostakovich always!!! Love from India.
Thank you!!
Wow! This started as background music while I did some computer projects but I had to stop what I was doing to watch this! I'm glad I did! Thank you Diane for an awesome performance!
Thank you! ❤
Ha, I replied from my other channel, but I'm glad you were mesmerized!
@@DianeChaplinCellist Will you be performing in LA anytime soon?
@@x-files5551 Nothing on the calendar so far.
*SO* good, Diane! This made my afternoon. A sticks-to-the-ribs vibe that's emotion, but also that wonderful intangible something extra that transcends emotion. Will you be uploading any of your Marie Jaëll performances? 🤞 PS - as someone mentioned below, the sound quality of your cello is fabulous.
Thank you so much, Corbin! I'm waiting (somewhat impatiently) for them to send me the link to the Jaell performances. I can only assume that they are doing some magic mixing or whatever, and since the Shostakovich took 3 months to get to me, seems like the Jaell is similar.
Jaell is finally up!
Diane, wow what a performance? Your tone is just incredible. I miss you guys. Hopefully we can see each other soon.
Thanks Mark! Are you still in Portland? We haven't been sure.
The cello sound is so huge! Wonderful!
I was really happy that they had a mic in front of me. They did a good job mixing the sound.
Belated Happy Birthday! Another marvelous concert! Just love your passion and interpretation.
Thanks for listening!
Thank you so much for this concert. It was silly beautiful.
Thank you!
resonant and soulful - and what an exciting ending!
Thanks for listening, glad you liked it! It's so great to have new wonderful works for solo cello.
Beautiful piece and performance. Bravo Diane!
I LOVE this!
I loved hearing the drums, it was pretty surreal.
Great program! Also very cute selections. I actually want to play the first piece now! Maybe he used this theme because of its connection to the old Soviet film Volga Volga.
I don't know about that, but it's interesting that this little song is so universal!
👍 This layman actually recognized "The Darker Half" by Clíodhna Ní Aodáin. 😁
Cool!!
I like how you play 2 lines at the same time. Loved ones are in our hearts and the cello is leaning on the wall. (Of the heart)
Thank you so much for listening!!
Nice! Where are you performing it?
Vancouver, Washington!
@@DianeChaplinCellist good luck!
thanks!
Auguste Tolbecque, sounds like a baroque version of a union fight songs/music we hear in contemporary times. . . . yes I know, this is the kinds of comments you get from a tekkie computer geek/comm engineer. 😃
Actually, this is a great comment. I have been somewhat unable to describe the style/ time period of this work, and you nailed it!
A beautiful work. What a profound final 4 minutes. Delicate and heart felt.
Thank you, I was so happy to find this piece!
Hello Diane, I think youtube is censoring me when I tried to post my e-mail address. I'm glad you are doing well. My wife and I were in Italy back in April/May of this year. Very beautiful country.
